Chapter 12: The Memory I Was Never Supposed To Recover
I stared at the picture until my eyes burned.
The nursery.
Our baby’s room.
The place where I folded clothes.
The place where I imagined my child’s first steps.
Someone had been inside.
Someone had been watching.
Daniel immediately called the police.
Rachel stood near the window, silent.
I looked at her.
“You knew this would happen.””
She looked guilty.
“I was afraid it would.””
“Why didn’t you tell us everything?””
“Because I wasn’t sure.””
“Sure about what?””
Rachel looked at Daniel.
“About how far she would go.””
The police arrived within minutes.
They took statements.
They photographed the injuries.
They collected the USB drive and documents.
But there was one question nobody could answer.
Where was Margaret?
Hours passed.
The hospital room became quiet again.
Daniel sat beside me.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at him.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because I keep finding new ways I failed you.””
I reached for his hand.
“I don’t need you to hate yourself.””
“What do you need?””
I looked at him.
“I need you to believe me.””
His eyes filled.
“I do.””
For the first time in days…
I believed him.
Then something happened.
A memory.
Small.
Sudden.
A sound.
A smell.
A sentence.
I grabbed my head.
Daniel immediately stood.
“What’s wrong?””
“I remember something.””
Rachel moved closer.
“What?””
I closed my eyes.
The hospital waiting room.
The night I thought I lost my baby.
Margaret sitting beside me.
Not comforting me.
Whispering.
“You don’t need to tell Daniel everything.””
My eyes opened.
“She was there.””
Daniel froze.
“Who?””
“My mother-in-law.””
Rachel nodded slowly.
“Keep going.””
I pressed my hand against my forehead.
“She came to the hospital.””
Daniel looked shocked.
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
Then another memory came.
Margaret holding my phone.
Reading something.
My blood turned cold.
“She took my phone.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What?””
“That night.””
I looked at him.
“She had my phone.””
Rachel immediately opened the folder.
“Wait.””
She pulled out another page.
A phone record.
“Your phone showed activity that night.””
Daniel looked.
“At what time?””
Rachel pointed.
“Two hours after she says she left.””
I stared.
“I wasn’t using my phone.””
Daniel looked at the record.
“Someone was.””
My hands went cold.
Rachel whispered:
“Someone sent a message from your phone.””
“What message?””
She looked at me.
“A message to Daniel.””
My husband froze.
“What did it say?””
Rachel turned the paper around.
I read it.
And my heart stopped.
Because the message explained everything.
It was sent from my phone.
To my husband.
Three months ago.
The night I disappeared.
The message said:
*I made a mistake. I don’t know if this baby is yours. Don’t ask me questions.*
Daniel stared at the screen.
I looked at him.
“I never sent that.””
He didn’t answer.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
This time, Daniel answered immediately.
A voice spoke.
A voice neither of us expected.
“Daniel.””
The voice was familiar.
Older.
Calm.
May you like
And it wasn’t Margaret.
It was my own father.
