Chapter 2: The Video She Tried To Hide

For a second, nobody moved.

The monitor continued glowing from across the room.

A tiny red symbol blinked in the corner.

Recording saved.

Daniel followed my eyes toward the screen.

“What is that?””

Margaret answered too quickly.

“Nothing.””

Her voice cracked.

Daniel frowned.

“Nothing?””

She stood up.

“You need to call the ambulance, not worry about some camera.””

But I saw it.

The fear in her eyes.

Not concern.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“Daniel,” I whispered, holding my stomach, “watch it.””

Margaret immediately stepped between him and the counter.

“Are you seriously going to believe a camera over your own mother?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Mom, move.””

That was the first time I had heard him sound firm with her.

She stared at him.

“After everything I’ve done for you?””

“This isn’t about that.””

“Yes, it is.””

Her voice rose.

“She’s already trying to destroy our relationship.””

I felt tears burning my eyes.

“I’m your wife, Margaret.””

She looked at me coldly.

“And I’m his mother.””

Daniel walked toward the monitor.

The room felt smaller with every step.

I could hear my own breathing.

I could hear the clock ticking on the wall.

I could hear Margaret whispering.

“Daniel, think carefully.””

He stopped.

She softened her voice.

“You’re about to accuse me because she’s upset. Do you really want to do that?””

Daniel looked back at her.

Then at me.

I had spent three weeks wondering if he would ever choose me when it mattered.

Now I was about to find out.

He reached for the monitor.

Margaret moved instantly.

She crossed the kitchen faster than I thought possible.

“Wait!””

Her hand shot toward the device.

Daniel grabbed her wrist before she reached it.

“Why are you trying to stop me?””

She froze.

“I wasn’t.””

“You were.””

“I was trying to help.””

I stared at her.

“Help who?””

The question hung in the air.

Daniel carefully picked up the monitor.

His hands were shaking.

“This camera has been recording the staircase?””

I nodded.

“It was installed six years ago after a break-in. It covers the upstairs hallway and stairs.””

Margaret’s face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

She knew.

The truth was sitting inside that tiny machine.

Daniel pressed the playback button.

The screen loaded.

A few seconds passed.

Then the image appeared.

The angle wasn’t perfect.

But it was clear enough.

I watched myself walking down the hallway.

I watched Margaret following behind me.

I watched her pointing her finger.

I watched myself turning away.

Then Daniel stopped breathing.

Because the next moment showed exactly what happened.

Margaret grabbing my arm.

Me pulling away.

Then her hands.

Her hands pushing me.

The room became completely silent.

No one spoke.

No one moved.

Daniel stared at the screen like his brain couldn’t accept what his eyes were seeing.

Margaret whispered.

“Wait.””

Nobody answered.

“That’s not what it looks like.””

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“Daniel,” I said softly, “you saw it.””

His face was broken.

He looked at his mother.

“Why?””

Margaret shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

“No,” Daniel said.

“I don’t.””

She stepped closer.

“She’s been manipulating you.””

Daniel looked stunned.

“She’s pregnant.””

“And?””

That one word changed everything.

Margaret realized she had said too much.

Her lips parted.

Then she quickly changed direction.

“I mean… and she knows you’ll always protect her.””

I felt something inside me break.

For weeks, I had tried to convince myself Margaret was just difficult.

Difficult people could change.

Difficult people could apologize.

But someone who pushed me down a staircase and then lied?

That was different.

Daniel picked up his phone.

“I’m calling the police.””

Margaret’s face went pale.

“No.””

The word came out instantly.

Daniel stared at her.

“Why not?””

She looked around the room.

Searching for something.

Anything.

Then she said the sentence I would never forget.

“Because if you call them, you’ll destroy this family.””

I looked at Daniel.

Waiting.

Because that was the moment I needed to know.

Was he still the man who asked me to forgive her?

Or was he finally seeing the truth?

He slowly unlocked his phone.

May you like

Then Margaret reached into her purse.

And pulled out something that made Daniel stop.
