Chapter 12: The Second Plan

I lunged toward the monitor.

"Where is she?""

Thomas Bennett smiled as though we'd met for lunch.

"She's perfectly safe, Daniel. For now.""

Detective Brooks was already speaking into her radio, relaying the image and asking officers to identify the room.

I could barely hear her.

Sophie was sitting at a small table, wearing the yellow sweater she'd chosen that morning. Her drawing lay beneath her hand.

She looked up when Thomas spoke.

"Uncle Thomas says we're playing a game, Daddy.""

My stomach twisted.

"Thomas, listen to me. Let her go.""

"That depends on you.""

"She's five years old.""

"I know exactly how old she is.""

Thomas adjusted the camera. I could see a closed door behind him and a narrow window covered by blinds.

He was trying to show me that Sophie was alive while concealing where he was holding her.

"Give her the phone," I demanded.

Thomas crouched beside her.

"Sophie, sweetheart, your daddy wants to talk to you.""

She leaned toward the screen.

"Daddy?""

"I'm here, baby.""

"Why can't I come home?""

My throat closed.

"You will. Very soon.""

Thomas gently took the phone away from her.

"Let's keep this simple. You have a board meeting in less than two hours. At that meeting, you'll approve the restructuring resolution Victor brought you.""

"And if I refuse?""

Thomas looked toward Sophie.

"Then we discuss what happens when a family loses everything.""

Detective Brooks stepped closer to the monitor.

"Thomas Bennett, this is Detective Elena Brooks. You are being recorded. Release the child and identify your location.""

Thomas laughed.

"Detective, I have no idea what you're talking about. Sophie is visiting a family friend.""

"Then tell us the address.""

"Of course. I'll be happy to provide it after Daniel signs the documents.""

The screen went black.

For one terrible second, I couldn't move.

Then the room erupted into activity.

Detective Brooks ordered an emergency response. Her officers began coordinating with local units, while Amanda contacted the company's security team and requested all available access records related to Thomas.

I gripped the edge of the conference table.

"I want every camera in every building checked. Every vehicle registered to Thomas. Every property he owns or visits.""

Amanda nodded and began issuing instructions.

Rebecca opened her laptop.

"We need to understand what the board resolution would actually do. If Thomas has threatened Sophie to obtain your signature, we must document the coercion and make sure no one can later claim the approval was voluntary.""

"I don't care about the signature right now.""

"I know," she said gently.

"But if we can establish exactly what he wants, we may be able to use that to find her.""

I forced myself to breathe.

Thomas had mentioned the restructuring resolution. He wanted control of the company, but the trust protections stood in his way.

Sophie was the key.

Martin was studying the original trust schedule.

"Daniel, I need to explain something about your father's arrangements.""

I turned toward him.

"Not now.""

"Please. This could be important.""

He pointed to a clause near the bottom of the document.

"Your father created a provision that activates if a beneficiary is threatened or coerced in an attempt to influence the company's ownership. Under that provision, the trustee can suspend certain voting rights and appoint an independent administrator while the threat is investigated.""

Rebecca read the clause.

"He's right. If the provision is valid and the required conditions are met, we may be able to prevent Thomas from using the proposed resolution to take control.""

"Can you activate it?""

"Not without verifying the evidence and following the trust's procedures," she replied.

"But we can prepare an emergency application.""

Martin looked at the blank monitor.

"Thomas knows about the provision. That's why he needs Daniel's signature today. He's trying to obtain control before the trust can be used against him.""

A knock sounded at the door.

One of the officers entered.

"Detective, we've traced the video transmission to a commercial internet connection in the Atlanta area. The signal was routed through several intermediary servers, but we have a probable location for the originating device.""

Detective Brooks turned.

"Where?""

The officer showed her a tablet.

"An industrial property near the airport. The building is registered to a subsidiary of Northstar Hospitality Holdings.""

I stepped forward.

"Then that's where he is.""

"It's a lead," the detective said.

"We still need to confirm that Sophie is there before entering.""

"How long will that take?""

"We're moving as quickly as we can.""

I looked at the clock.

10:06 a.m.

The board meeting was scheduled for eleven.

Thomas had given me less than an hour to surrender the company or risk my daughter's safety.

Victor sat under the watch of two officers. His earlier confidence had disappeared.

I turned toward him.

"How much do you know about where Thomas is keeping Sophie?""

He shook his head.

"I don't know where she is.""

"Did you know he was planning to take her?""

"No.""

I stared at him.

"You expect me to believe that?""

Victor looked down.

"I knew he intended to use her as leverage. I didn't know he would actually take her.""

"That distinction won't help you.""

"I know.""

For the first time, his voice sounded exhausted rather than calculating.

"Daniel, Thomas doesn't trust anyone. He used me because I had access to the company's finances. He used Olivia because she had access to your schedule. He used Martin because he knew your father trusted him.""

"And you went along with it.""

"Yes.""

The admission came so easily that I wanted to hit him.

Instead, I leaned closer.

"Tell me everything you know.""

Victor rubbed his face.

"Northstar was created to acquire assets connected to Bennett Grand Hotels. The missing payments were only part of it. We also arranged private contracts, manipulated occupancy reports, and created false liabilities that made certain properties appear less profitable than they were.""

"Why?""

"To lower the company's valuation before the acquisition.""

I felt sick.

"You deliberately damaged my hotels.""

"We were going to acquire them and rebuild them.""

"With stolen money?""

Victor didn't answer.

"What happened to the guests who disappeared from the reservation system?""

"Some were moved to other hotels. Others were placed on the restricted floor because Thomas didn't want their complaints reaching corporate.""

"And Emily?""

"She found the payment records and discovered the ownership transfer. Thomas ordered her isolated until he could retrieve the evidence.""

"Did he order you to hurt her?""

Victor looked at me.

"I didn't hear that order.""

"That wasn't my question.""

He closed his eyes.

"Yes. He authorized the security team to use force if she resisted.""

My hands curled into fists.

Detective Brooks interrupted.

"Mr. Hale, that statement will be included in the investigation.""

Victor nodded.

"I understand.""

I turned back to the detective.

"We have a probable location. We have a threatened child. What more do you need?""

"We need a lawful basis to enter and a safe plan to recover her. We're coordinating with the appropriate units now.""

I knew she was right.

But every second felt like a lifetime.

Amanda approached with her phone in hand.

"Daniel, I've found something in the corporate vehicle records. Thomas has access to a company-owned transport van registered to the Northstar subsidiary. It was used this morning.""

"Can we track it?""

"Not directly. But the vehicle's access card was used at the airport-area property twenty minutes ago.""

Detective Brooks immediately relayed the information to her team.

Then Martin opened his briefcase and removed a small envelope.

"There's one more thing Rachel prepared.""

I stared at him.

"What now?""

"A backup copy of the trust's emergency instructions. She gave it to me before she died.""

He handed the envelope to Rebecca, who opened it carefully.

Inside was a signed declaration, a list of protected assets, and a handwritten note from Rachel.

Rebecca read it silently.

Then she looked at me.

"Daniel, this may be enough to suspend the restructuring resolution before the board votes.""

"Do it.""

"We need to file it immediately.""

"Then file it.""

She began making calls.

For the first time that morning, I felt we might be able to stop Thomas from taking the company.

But I still didn't have my daughter.

My phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

A photograph appeared on the screen.

Sophie was standing beside a metal door, her face wet with tears. Thomas was nowhere in the frame.

Beneath the photograph was a message.

*THE BOARD MEETING STARTS IN FORTY MINUTES. BRING THE ORIGINAL TRUST DOCUMENTS. COME ALONE.*

I showed Detective Brooks.

She read it, then shook her head.

"You are not going alone.""

"He'll hurt her if I don't cooperate.""

"Or he's trying to make you walk into another trap.""

"What am I supposed to do? Wait while he threatens my daughter?""

"No," she said firmly.

"We're going to use the message to our advantage. We'll coordinate with the team locating the property and develop a safe recovery plan.""

I stared at Sophie's photograph.

She was holding something in her right hand.

A purple crayon.

The same color she'd used to draw the hotel the night before.

Then I noticed a detail in the background.

Behind her was a wall covered with framed photographs of luxury hotels.

One of them showed the Bennett Grand Hotel in downtown Atlanta.

Another showed a property in Savannah.

And the third showed a building I had never seen before.

A hotel with the Bennett Grand name above its entrance, but one that wasn't listed among our twenty-four properties.

I enlarged the image.

The building stood beside a stretch of coastline, with a long white balcony overlooking the water.

Beneath the photograph was a brass plaque.

*BENNETT GRAND — PRIVATE RESIDENCE.*

I looked at Martin.

"Do you recognize this building?""

His face went white.

"Yes.""

"Where is it?""

He swallowed.

"It's your father's original estate on the Georgia coast. The property that was supposedly sold after his death.""

"Who owns it now?""

Martin stared at the photograph.

Then he whispered the words I had dreaded hearing.

"Thomas Bennett.""

My phone vibrated again.

This time, it was a voice message.

I pressed play.

Thomas's voice filled the room.

"Daniel, I hope you've enjoyed your little investigation. You have twenty minutes left.""

A pause.

Then Sophie's frightened voice.

"Daddy, please come get me.""

The message ended.

Detective Brooks immediately ordered her team to move on the coastal property while another unit continued checking the industrial building near the airport.

I stared at the photograph of my daughter.

Thomas had two possible locations, a company he was trying to steal, and a deadline designed to make me panic.

But he had made one mistake.

He had assumed that threatening my family would make me surrender.

Instead, it had given me the one thing I'd been missing since Rachel died.

A reason to stop being afraid of what I might lose.

I turned to Rebecca.

"File the emergency trust petition. Stop the board meeting.""

Then I looked at Detective Brooks.

"And bring my daughter home.""

She nodded.

"We will.""

I picked up the original trust document and placed it inside my briefcase.

Thomas wanted me to come alone.

He wanted me desperate.

He wanted me to believe I had no choice.

But as the officers prepared to leave, my phone rang one final time.

It was Emily.

Her voice was urgent.

"Daniel, don't go to the coastal house.""

"Why?""

"Because I remembered what Rachel told me about that place.""

"What did she say?""

Emily began crying.

"She said if Thomas ever took Sophie there, it meant he had found the original trust.""

I stopped breathing.

"How could he have found it?""

Emily whispered the answer.

"Because the original trust isn't in Martin's briefcase.""

She paused.

"It's hidden inside the coastal house.""

May you like

And before I could ask another question, Emily added the words that changed our entire plan.

"Daniel, there's a second beneficiary. And if Thomas gets that document before we do, Sophie won't be the only person whose future he controls.""
