Chapter 11: My Uncle's Price for Betrayal

"Open this door!""

Victor Hale's voice carried through the corridor.

Detective Brooks signaled one of her officers to remain near the entrance while Rebecca gathered the documents into a secure folder.

I couldn't stop looking at Thomas Bennett's name.

My uncle had been a constant presence throughout my childhood. He'd taught me to drive, attended my university graduation, and helped me through the first year after my father's death.

When I married Rachel, he gave a toast about loyalty and family.

When she died, he stood beside me at the funeral and told me that I could always depend on him.

Now Martin was telling me that the same man had financed an operation designed to steal my company.

"Why?"" I asked.

Martin folded his hands.

"Your father changed his will shortly before he died. Thomas expected to inherit a significant portion of the business. Instead, your father left you controlling ownership and established protections for Sophie.""

"My uncle already owns shares.""

"Minority shares. He wanted control.""

"Enough to destroy our family?""

Martin looked exhausted.

"People who convince themselves they're entitled to something can justify almost anything to obtain it.""

The pounding at the door intensified.

"Daniel!"" Victor shouted.

"I know you're in there. We need to talk.""

I stood.

"Let him in.""

Detective Brooks raised an eyebrow.

"Are you certain?""

"Yes. But I want everything recorded.""

She nodded to the officer.

The door opened.

Victor strode inside wearing an immaculate navy suit and carrying a leather folder. His expression was furious, but the moment he saw Martin, his face changed.

The folder slipped slightly in his hand.

"No," he whispered.

Martin remained seated.

"Good morning, Victor.""

Victor stared at him.

"You're dead.""

"Apparently, everyone keeps saying that.""

Victor recovered quickly, straightening his jacket.

"This is absurd. Daniel, whatever this man has told you, he's a fraud. Martin Shaw died last year. I attended his memorial service.""

Martin gave him a cold smile.

"You attended a memorial service for a man you helped frighten into hiding.""

Victor turned toward Detective Brooks.

"You're allowing a wanted fraudster to occupy a corporate conference room?""

"Mr. Hale, we're investigating allegations of financial fraud, evidence tampering, and possible unlawful confinement. You're welcome to answer questions, but you are not authorized to interfere with this investigation.""

Victor's eyes narrowed.

"Daniel, we need to speak privately.""

"No.""

"You don't understand the consequences of what you're doing.""

"I understand that my company lost millions of dollars while you maintained a secret floor inside one of my hotels.""

Victor's face tightened.

"Those allegations are fabricated.""

"Then explain Northstar.""

"An investment vehicle.""

"Explain the missing reservations.""

"Operational adjustments.""

"Explain why Emily was locked upstairs.""

For the first time, Victor had no immediate answer.

He glanced at Martin.

Then he looked at me.

"Emily was interfering in matters she didn't understand.""

"She was investigating theft.""

"She was putting the company at risk.""

"You locked my sister in a room.""

"I never ordered anyone to imprison her!""

Martin leaned forward.

"You ordered Richard to keep her isolated. I have the messages.""

Victor's jaw clenched.

"Those messages are out of context.""

"Then explain the context," I said.

Victor set his folder on the table.

"Daniel, you're allowing personal emotions to cloud your judgment. Your sister has always been impulsive. Your wife was secretive. And now you're trusting a man who faked his own death.""

He paused.

"Ask yourself why Rachel created a trust without telling you.""

The question struck a nerve.

I hated that he knew exactly where to press.

But I also remembered Rachel's handwriting on the envelope, Emily's bruised face, and the anonymous threat against Sophie.

"You don't get to use my wife to defend yourself," I said.

Victor's expression hardened.

"Then let's discuss business.""

He opened his folder and laid out a series of documents.

"This morning, the board received evidence that your credentials authorized unauthorized transfers totaling eleven point eight million dollars. There is also a preliminary report suggesting you concealed ownership interests through your late wife's estate.""

Rebecca immediately examined the documents.

"These are incomplete financial summaries," she said.

"They do not establish responsibility.""

"They establish sufficient grounds for an emergency review," Victor replied.

He turned to me.

"If you voluntarily suspend your executive authority and approve a temporary restructuring, we can contain this before the company's reputation is destroyed.""

I looked at the proposed resolution.

It would transfer operational control to a newly appointed committee.

Victor would chair it.

Beneath the resolution was a clause granting the committee authority to negotiate a sale of selected assets without further approval from me.

"You want me to hand you the company," I said.

"I want to save it.""

"By putting yourself in charge?""

"Someone needs to restore confidence.""

Martin laughed quietly.

Victor spun toward him.

"You should keep your mouth shut.""

"Or what?"" Martin asked.

"You'll arrange another memorial service?""

Detective Brooks stepped between them.

"That's enough.""

Victor took a breath and turned back to me.

"Daniel, this can still end quietly. Sign the temporary resolution. I'll take responsibility for the operational problems, and you can focus on your family.""

"My family?""

"Your daughter needs stability. You don't want her growing up in the middle of a corporate scandal.""

The threat was subtle.

But it was there.

I closed the folder.

"You don't get to mention my daughter again.""

Victor's expression became almost pitying.

"You're making a terrible mistake.""

"No. I made a mistake when I trusted you.""

He looked toward Amanda.

"Amanda, surely you understand the business implications here.""

Amanda closed her laptop.

"I understand that the property you oversee has been implicated in serious misconduct. I also understand that you attempted to block an evidence-preservation procedure last night.""

"Because the procedure was unauthorized!""

"Corporate security had authorization from the chairman.""

Victor's face reddened.

I turned toward Rebecca.

"Can we stop the proposed transfer?""

"We can challenge it, but we'll need to establish the trust's voting protections and verify the relevant corporate documents. If the board attempts to act today, we must be prepared to respond immediately.""

Martin opened his briefcase again.

"There's another way.""

He removed a document bearing my father's signature.

"This is the original trust schedule. It grants Sophie a protected voting interest that cannot be transferred without approval from an independent trustee and two designated guardians.""

I read the page.

My father had appointed Martin as trustee.

Rachel had been named the first designated guardian.

And after her death, the authority had passed to me.

Victor stared at the document.

"That schedule was supposed to have been destroyed.""

The room went silent.

Detective Brooks slowly turned toward him.

"Why would you expect it to be destroyed, Mr. Hale?""

Victor's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

I felt a grim clarity settle over me.

He hadn't merely known about the trust.

He had known it was the obstacle preventing him from taking control.

Martin placed a second document beside the first.

"The original schedule is supported by notarized records, bank confirmations, and a separate legal archive. We can establish its authenticity.""

Victor looked from the documents to me.

Then he laughed.

"You think this protects you? Thomas has spent years preparing for this. He has people on the board, people in the banks, and people in your legal department.""

"Then we'll identify them.""

"You won't have time.""

Detective Brooks stepped forward.

"Mr. Hale, I need you to remain here while we clarify your role in these transactions.""

Victor suddenly reached into his jacket.

The officers moved immediately.

He froze with one hand inside his pocket.

"Slowly," Detective Brooks ordered.

"Take your hand out.""

Victor withdrew a phone.

It was vibrating.

The screen displayed a message from Thomas Bennett.

Victor glanced at it, and his face drained of color.

I held out my hand.

"Let me see.""

He hesitated.

Detective Brooks took the phone and examined the visible message.

It read:

*THE BOARD IS READY. IF DANIEL REFUSES, ACTIVATE THE SECOND PLAN. THE CHILD IS THE KEY.*

I felt the blood leave my face.

Victor looked at me.

For the first time, he appeared genuinely frightened.

"Daniel," he whispered, "you need to get your daughter out of the country.""

Before I could respond, the conference room's wall monitor switched on.

A live video feed appeared.

Sophie was sitting in a small room, drawing with purple crayons.

Behind her stood a man I recognized immediately.

My uncle, Thomas Bennett.

He leaned toward the camera and smiled.

May you like

"Hello, Daniel," he said.

"We need to talk about your daughter's inheritance.""
