Chapter 14: The Choice That Changed Everything

Victoria arrived at my father’s house before I did.

By the time I got there, she was standing in the living room with the confidence of someone who had never been told no.

My mother was there.

Clara was there.

Even Sienna.

For the first time, everyone who had hidden pieces of my life was sitting in the same room.

Victoria looked at me.

“Juliet.””

I didn’t respond.

She looked at the ring on my finger.

“So you have it.””

My eyes narrowed.

“The ring?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her expression hardened.

“Because it proves your grandmother’s wishes.””

I laughed.

“Funny. Everyone keeps using my grandmother’s name when they want something.””

Victoria ignored that.

“The trust belongs to both families.””

“No.””

She looked surprised.

“No?””

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to talk about family after spending decades protecting lies.””

Her jaw tightened.

“You don’t understand what is at stake.””

“I understand perfectly.””

I stepped closer.

“You wanted Graham and me together because of money.””

“That is not the whole story.””

“Then tell it.””

Silence.

Everyone looked at her.

Finally, Clara spoke.

“Tell her.””

Victoria looked at her.

The room changed.

Because for once, someone wasn’t afraid of her.

Victoria sighed.

“Your grandmother and my father made mistakes.””

“Big enough to ruin lives.””

“Yes.””

She looked at Clara.

“When Rebecca had her daughter, my father tried to hide it because he believed a woman could not control the family legacy.””

Clara’s face was emotionless.

“He tried to erase me.””

Victoria nodded.

“Yes.””

“And your family helped.””

“Yes.””

The admission was quiet.

But powerful.

I looked at my mother.

She was crying.

“I thought I was protecting what my mother built,” Elaine whispered.

Clara looked at her.

“You were protecting your fear.””

My mother lowered her head.

She didn’t argue.

Victoria reached into her bag.

She placed a document on the table.

“The trust requires one condition.””

I didn’t touch it.

“What?””

“The descendants of both families must agree.””

“Agree to what?””

She looked at me.

“To unite the families.””

I stared.

“That’s why the engagement happened.””

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

Sienna suddenly laughed.

Everyone looked at her.

“I can’t believe this.””

Her eyes were full of tears.

“All of us fighting over a man who was just a signature on a contract.””

She looked at me.

“I spent my whole life wanting what you had.””

Her voice broke.

“And you spent yours believing you weren’t enough.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Because she was right.

We had both been manipulated by the same people.

Different roles.

Same pain.

Then Clara stepped forward.

“No.””

Victoria turned.

“What?””

Clara pointed at the document.

“No one is signing this.””

Victoria’s face hardened.

“You would give up everything?””

Clara smiled sadly.

“I spent my entire life without it.””

She looked at me.

“So did Juliet.””

My throat tightened.

Clara continued:

“If the only way to get money is to repeat the same cruelty that created this mess, then it isn’t worth having.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then my mother walked toward the document.

I thought she was going to sign.

Instead, she tore it in half.

Victoria stared.

“What are you doing?””

Elaine looked at her.

“Choosing my daughters.””

The room went quiet.

Not one daughter.

Not the one she raised.

Not the one she lost.

Both.

Victoria left without another word.

And for the first time in my life, the house felt peaceful.

But that peace lasted only minutes.

Because my phone rang.

The number was from the venue.

I answered.

A man’s voice spoke quickly.

“Ms. Hale?””

“Yes?””

“I’m sorry to bother you.””

“What happened?””

A pause.

Then:

“We found something hidden inside your wedding gown.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

The man lowered his voice.

“Something your grandmother placed there.””

I looked at Clara.

She went pale.

“What is it?””

The man said:

“A letter.””

I swallowed.

“To who?””

Another pause.

May you like

Then:

“To you.””
