Chapter 11: The Family Tree Nobody Wanted

I read the sentence until the words stopped looking like words.

I share blood with the Whitmores.

The family I was about to marry into.

The family that had been connected to my own for generations.

The family that had secrets buried deeper than anyone admitted.

I looked at my mother.

“What does this mean?””

She looked terrified.

“I don’t know everything.””

“That’s not possible.””

“It is.””

I held up the letter.

“Grandma wrote this.””

“Yes.””

“And you knew about it?””

She looked away.

“I knew there was a connection.””

“What connection?””

My mother took a breath.

“Your grandmother believed the Whitmores and Hales were connected through Rebecca’s daughter.””

I frowned.

“Rebecca’s daughter?””

“Yes.””

“But Rebecca’s daughter was you.””

My mother shook her head.

“No.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

“I wasn’t Rebecca’s daughter.””

I stared at her.

“What are you saying?””

She looked at the floor.

“I was adopted from another family.””

My mind struggled to keep up.

“Then whose daughter was Rebecca?””

My mother whispered:

“Clara.””

I froze.

No.

That couldn’t be right.

“Clara is Rebecca’s daughter?””

“Yes.””

The pieces crashed together.

My mother wasn’t Rebecca’s daughter.

Clara was.

My grandmother had lost one daughter, raised another, and spent decades trying to protect the child she saved.

But then why did my grandmother say I shared blood with the Whitmores?

My mother saw the question on my face.

“Because of your father.””

I went still.

“My father?””

She nodded.

“Daniel knew.””

I felt betrayed all over again.

“My dad knew?””

“Yes.””

I grabbed my phone.

I called him.

He answered immediately.

“Juliet.””

“You knew.””

Silence.

“Dad.””

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

No answer.

“When were you going to tell me that I’m connected to the Whitmores?””

His breathing changed.

“You found out.””

I closed my eyes.

“I am so tired of finding out.””

“Juliet, listen to me.””

“No. You listen.””

My voice cracked.

“I trusted all of you.””

“We were trying to protect you.””

“Everyone says that.””

I ended the call.

For the first time, I understood something.

Secrets didn’t protect people.

They protected the people keeping them.

The next morning, I went to Clara’s salon.

She was opening when I arrived.

One look at my face, and she knew.

“What happened?””

I placed the letter on the counter.

Her eyes scanned the page.

Then she sat down.

“She told you.””

“You knew?””

Clara nodded.

“My mother told me.””

“Your mother?””

“Rebecca.””

I stared at her.

“You’ve spoken to her?””

Clara looked away.

“She disappeared from my life when I was young.””

“Why?””

“She believed she was protecting me.””

I almost smiled.

Everyone had the same excuse.

Clara touched the letter.

“Juliet, there is something else.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She opened a drawer.

Inside was a file.

Old.

Worn.

She placed it in front of me.

“This is the original family record.””

I opened it.

The names were written in faded ink.

Rebecca Bennett.

Margaret Hale.

Elaine.

Clara.

And then another name.

A name I recognized.

But not because of my family.

Because of Graham.

I looked at Clara.

“No.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

The record showed a connection between Rebecca’s family and the Whitmores.

Not through marriage.

Not through business.

Through a child.

A child whose descendants carried the Whitmore name.

I whispered:

“Graham.””

Clara’s face turned pale.

“Yes.””

The truth finally arrived.

Not like a storm.

Like an earthquake.

Quiet.

Then impossible to ignore.

“Graham and I…”

May you like

Clara finished the sentence.

“You are related.””
