Chapter 10: The Marriage That Began With a Secret

For several seconds, I couldn't hear the rain.

Richard Mitchell sat in the back of his black sedan, one gloved hand resting on the door, watching me as though he had just delivered a business proposal rather than detonated my entire understanding of my first marriage.

Ryan stood beside me beneath the coffee shop awning.

“What did you just say?”” I asked.

Richard sighed impatiently.

“Your mother had a private arrangement with Daniel. She insisted he keep certain details from you until the company became financially stable.””

“What details?””

“That's what we're going to discuss.””

Ryan shook his head.

“Dad, if you know something about Daniel and Emily's marriage, say it now.””

Richard's expression hardened.

“Not in the street. Get in.””

I should have walked away.

Instead, I climbed into the car.

Ryan followed, leaving Jessica standing beneath the awning with her folder pressed against her chest.

The sedan pulled into traffic.

For ten minutes, Richard said nothing. He watched the buildings slide past the tinted windows while Ryan sat rigidly beside me.

Finally, we arrived at a private members' club near Michigan Avenue.

Richard led us into a conference room with dark wood paneling, leather chairs, and a long table set with untouched glasses of water.

He closed the door.

Then he removed a thin folder from his briefcase.

"Your mother came to see me four years before she died," he began.

"She wanted me to invest in Brooks Innovations.""

I frowned.

"Why would she approach you if she had already invested in Daniel?""

"Because Daniel needed additional capital, and your mother believed I could provide it.""

"Then why didn't you?""

Richard's mouth tightened.

"Because I wanted control of the company. Daniel refused to surrender it.""

Ryan leaned forward.

"So you tried to undermine him instead?""

"Don't be dramatic. I pursued an acquisition. That's what investors do.""

"By using Emily's private information?""

Richard ignored him.

"Your mother understood the risks. She also understood that Daniel was emotionally attached to you, which made the situation complicated.""

I felt cold.

"Explain that.""

Richard opened the folder.

Inside was a copy of an old letter written by my mother.

I recognized the looping handwriting immediately.

Daniel, I know you love Emily. But love cannot be the foundation of a business decision. If you marry her, you must protect her interests without making her feel indebted to you.

My throat tightened.

Richard placed another page beside it.

It was a handwritten agreement between my mother and Daniel.

The first paragraph described her investment in Brooks Innovations.

The second referred to my contribution of twelve thousand dollars.

The third contained a sentence that made my hands tremble.

Daniel Brooks acknowledges that his relationship with Emily Lopez must remain independent of any financial obligation arising from Catherine Lopez's investment.

I read it twice.

"What does this mean?""

Richard folded his hands.

"Your mother worried that Daniel might feel obligated to remain married to you because of her money.""

I looked up.

"That's ridiculous.""

"Is it?""

Ryan turned toward his father.

"Are you suggesting Daniel married Emily for financial reasons?""

Richard's smile was thin.

"I'm suggesting your mother believed the marriage could become entangled with the investment.""

I pushed the document away.

"Daniel and I were already married when my mother invested.""

"Yes. But she was concerned about what might happen if the business succeeded and your marriage failed.""

I thought about Daniel sitting across from me in our tiny kitchen, explaining the company structure, promising that he would repay the money.

I remembered how often he had asked me to read the documents.

I had refused.

I'd accused him of trying to trap me in a life I didn't want.

"You're twisting this," I said.

Richard shrugged.

"Perhaps. But there is another document you should see.""

He removed a final page.

It was a letter addressed to him, dated six months before my mother's death.

If Emily and Daniel are no longer together, please ensure that her financial contribution is protected. Daniel has promised to repay her regardless of the company's future.

Beneath it was a second paragraph.

I also ask that you never use my daughter's anger against her. She is frightened of being poor, and she sometimes mistakes security for love.

I stared at the words until they blurred.

My mother had understood me better than I had understood myself.

Richard leaned back.

"Your mother was a perceptive woman. She knew you were unhappy. She also knew Daniel wouldn't abandon you simply because the marriage ended.""

"Then why did you keep the agreement?""

"Because the ownership terms were unfavorable to me.""

The blunt admission silenced the room.

Ryan stood.

"You kept a document belonging to a deceased woman because you didn't like its financial implications?""

"I preserved a document connected to a potential acquisition. Don't confuse business judgment with sentiment.""

I rose too.

"Where is the original?""

Richard's expression became unreadable.

"Secure.""

"Where?""

"I'll arrange for it to be reviewed by the appropriate attorneys.""

"No. You will tell us where it is.""

He looked at me as though I were a child making unreasonable demands.

"Emily, you need to understand that the document may not be enforceable. Your mother's intentions are not necessarily the same as the legal terms.""

"Then let the lawyers decide.""

For the first time, Richard seemed genuinely annoyed.

"You sound remarkably like Daniel.""

"Maybe that's because he's the only person who has been honest with me.""

Ryan stared at me.

Richard slowly closed his briefcase.

"Be careful. Daniel has spent years building his reputation. He isn't going to risk it for an old investment agreement and a woman who once tried to destroy his company.""

I felt the familiar urge to defend myself.

Then I stopped.

"I don't expect him to risk anything for me.""

I reached for my coat.

"I expect you to stop hiding documents that don't belong to you.""

Ryan followed me to the door.

Behind us, Richard's voice sharpened.

"Ryan, if you walk out with her, don't expect me to protect your position during the acquisition.""

Ryan stopped.

I watched him struggle with the decision.

His father had funded his education, introduced him to influential executives, and helped him enter the investment industry.

For years, Ryan had believed that success meant earning his father's approval.

I knew that feeling.

I'd spent my marriage trying to escape poverty because I believed financial security would finally make me feel worthy.

Ryan looked back at his father.

"Then I'll earn my position without your protection.""

He opened the door.

We left together.

Outside, he took my hand.

"I'm sorry," he said.

"For what?""

"For believing my father without asking questions.""

I looked at him.

"Ryan, I did the same thing to Daniel.""

He nodded.

"I know.""

We stood in silence beneath the stone entrance.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Margaret.

Daniel has located the original ownership agreement. Please come to Brooks Capital immediately. There is a clause that changes everything.

I showed Ryan.

He read it, then looked at me.

"What clause?""

I called Margaret.

She answered immediately.

"Emily, I can't discuss the details over the phone. But Daniel has reviewed the original document.""

"Does it prove my mother owned part of the company?""

A pause.

"It establishes something more significant than that.""

"What?""

Margaret lowered her voice.

"It appears your mother transferred her ownership interest into a trust before she died.""

I gripped the phone.

"Who is the beneficiary?""

May you like

Another pause.

"Emily, the beneficiary is you.""
