Chapter 1: The Man I Called Worthless
“People like you never amount to anything, Daniel. That’s why I left you.””
I said it loud enough for two hundred wedding guests to hear, loud enough to make my bridesmaids laugh, and loud enough that my ex-husband had nowhere to hide.
Three seconds later, my new husband would take that same man's hand and call him the most powerful person in his professional life.
But that wasn't the worst part.
The worst part was the white envelope Daniel had carried into my wedding.
I just didn't know what was inside it yet.
The ballroom of the Blackstone Hotel in downtown Chicago glittered beneath crystal chandeliers. White roses covered every table. A string quartet played beside the windows, and champagne flowed freely as wealthy guests congratulated me on marrying Ryan Mitchell, a rising executive at one of Chicago's most prestigious investment firms.
I had spent six months planning this wedding.
Six months choosing the perfect flowers, the perfect dress, the perfect guest list.
And I had made absolutely certain that nobody from my old life would be allowed to ruin it.
Apparently, I had failed.
Daniel Brooks stood near the champagne table wearing a faded gray suit, his dark hair slightly longer than I remembered. His shoes were polished but worn at the edges. In his hands was a plain white envelope.
For one ridiculous second, I felt something dangerously close to nostalgia.
Then I remembered the apartment with the broken heater. The grocery bills we split down to the penny. The nights I came home from work to find him sitting at our tiny kitchen table, surrounded by financial reports, promising that everything would change someday.
Someday.
I'd grown tired of that word.
"Daniel?"" I approached him, lifting my chin.
"What are you doing here?""
He looked at me calmly.
"Congratulations, Emily.""
"I didn't ask for your congratulations. I asked why you're here.""
"I came to deliver something.""
He lifted the envelope slightly.
I glanced at it and laughed.
"Seriously? You couldn't even afford a proper wedding gift?""
A nearby couple stopped talking.
Daniel lowered his hand.
"It's not a gift.""
"Of course it isn't."" I tilted my head, examining his suit.
"You're still wearing that thing? I think I remember it from our third anniversary.""
His expression barely changed.
"That sounds about right.""
I hated that answer. I wanted him embarrassed, defensive, desperate to prove that he had become somebody since the day I left him.
Instead, he stood there as though my insults were a minor inconvenience.
Jessica, my maid of honor, hurried over with a champagne flute.
"Emily, is everything okay?""
"Perfectly fine."" I gestured toward Daniel.
"This is my unemployed ex-husband. Apparently, he still hasn't figured out how to move on.""
Jessica's eyebrows rose.
"Oh.""
Daniel nodded politely to her.
"Nice to meet you.""
She gave an awkward little laugh.
"You too.""
Then she turned to me and whispered, not nearly quietly enough, "I thought you said he was living somewhere terrible.""
"He probably is.""
Daniel heard every word.
I could tell from the way his fingers tightened around the envelope.
For the first time, a flicker of satisfaction warmed my chest.
There he was. The man I'd known. The man who used to go silent whenever I told him the truth.
"You know," I continued, raising my voice again, "you could have at least called before showing up. This is a wedding, not a charity event.""
A man standing nearby coughed into his drink to disguise a laugh.
Daniel's eyes met mine.
"I didn't come here to embarrass you, Emily.""
"Then leave.""
He looked toward the ballroom doors.
"I will, once I've delivered what I came to deliver.""
"Still making excuses."" I folded my arms.
"You couldn't even afford our apartment when we were married. I paid for groceries. I paid for electricity. I practically paid for your entire existence.""
His jaw tightened.
"You paid for more than you should have.""
The unexpected admission irritated me.
"At least you finally admit it.""
He looked down at the envelope.
"But not for the reasons you think.""
Before I could respond, Ryan appeared beside me, smiling broadly as he adjusted his black tuxedo.
"What's going on here, sweetheart?""
I slipped my hand into his arm.
"Nothing. Just an unpleasant surprise from my past.""
Ryan glanced at Daniel.
For a moment, he didn't move.
Then his eyes widened.
"Mr. Brooks?""
The smile vanished from my face.
Ryan stepped around me so quickly that his shoulder brushed mine. He extended both hands toward Daniel.
"Sir! I had no idea you'd arrived. It's an incredible honor.""
Daniel shook his hand.
"Congratulations, Ryan.""
Ryan looked genuinely overwhelmed.
"Thank you. I really appreciate you making the time.""
I stared at my new husband.
"Ryan?""
He didn't hear me.
Or perhaps he simply didn't want to.
"Everyone," Ryan called, turning toward the guests gathering nearby, "I'd like to introduce someone very special.""
Daniel's gaze shifted briefly to me.
There was no triumph in it.
No anger.
Just a quiet disappointment that made my stomach tighten.
Ryan placed a hand on Daniel's shoulder.
"This is Daniel Brooks, founder and CEO of Brooks Capital, the billionaire investor whose company just acquired our firm.""
The ballroom went silent.
Somewhere behind me, a champagne glass clinked against a plate.
I felt my fingers go numb around my own glass.
"Billionaire?"" I whispered.
Ryan finally turned toward me.
"Honey, you know Daniel?""
I swallowed.
"He's my ex-husband.""
Ryan's expression changed so abruptly that I almost stepped backward.
"Your ex-husband?""
"Yes.""
"But you told me—"
He stopped himself.
Daniel looked at Ryan.
"What did she tell you?""
Ryan's mouth opened, then closed.
Around us, the guests were no longer pretending not to listen.
Daniel slipped one hand into his jacket pocket.
"I suppose we should discuss the envelope.""
Ryan nodded quickly.
"Of course. Is that the acquisition paperwork?""
"No.""
Daniel extended the envelope toward him.
"This concerns something Emily signed before our divorce.""
Ryan accepted it.
I reached for his wrist.
"Ryan, we don't need to do this here.""
He looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.
"Then why did you tell me your first marriage ended years ago?""
I opened my mouth.
Nothing came out.
Ryan pulled the document from the envelope.
He read the first page.
Then he read it again.
The color drained from his face.
When he finally looked up, his voice was barely audible.
May you like
"Emily, why does this document say you were still legally married to Daniel when you married me?""
And for the first time that evening, I realized the man I had humiliated might not be the only person in that room who knew my secrets.
