Chapter 2: The Boy Who Refused to Go Home
“Mommy Audrey!””
Leo ran toward me so quickly that a court officer had to hurry after him.
I barely managed to rise before he wrapped both arms around my waist, pressing his face against my pregnant belly.
His little shoulders shook.
“Please don't make me go home,” he sobbed.
“Please, Mommy. I'll be good. I promise I'll be good.””
My heart broke in a place I hadn't known was still capable of breaking.
I knelt carefully, ignoring the sharp pull in my lower back, and held his face between my hands.
“Oh, sweetheart. You don't have to earn my love. Never.””
He looked at me with red-rimmed eyes.
“Promise?””
“I promise.””
Across the room, Julian had gone pale.
“Leo,” he said, forcing a smile that didn't reach his eyes.
“Come here, buddy. Daddy's right here.””
Leo recoiled so violently that his stuffed rabbit fell to the floor.
“NO!””
The scream silenced everyone.
He grabbed my sleeve and hid behind my body.
“Don't let him take me!””
Julian took one step forward.
“Leo, stop acting like this. You're embarrassing yourself.””
Judge Norris struck her gavel.
“Mr. Vance, remain where you are.””
“But he's my son!””
“And I am responsible for maintaining order in this courtroom. Sit down.””
Julian obeyed, but his eyes never left Leo.
Clara leaned toward him and whispered something. I couldn't hear the words, but I watched Leo's fingers tighten around my sleeve.
Then he looked at Clara.
“You promised you wouldn't come near me again,” he said.
Clara's face flushed.
“Leo, sweetheart, you've misunderstood something.””
“No, I haven't!””
“Don't speak to me that way.””
The sharpness in her voice made him flinch.
I turned my head slowly.
“Clara, he's frightened. Stop speaking to him like he's done something wrong.””
She gave me an incredulous look.
“You have no idea what you're talking about.””
“Then explain it.””
“It's a family matter.””
“I'm his family.””
The words came out before I could stop them.
For seven years, I had packed Leo's lunches, sat beside his bed when he had fevers, learned which bedtime stories made him laugh, and held him through the first anniversary of his mother's death.
I had never asked him to call me anything.
The first time he called me Mommy Audrey, he was four. He had woken from a nightmare and stumbled into my bedroom, clutching that same stuffed rabbit.
I had carried him back to bed.
He had fallen asleep with his head on my shoulder.
In the morning, he had whispered, “You're my mommy, too, aren't you?””
I had cried in the bathroom so he wouldn't see.
Now, in a courtroom, the woman who had helped destroy my marriage was telling me I wasn't his family.
I looked at Julian.
“Why is your son afraid of going home?””
“He isn't afraid,” Julian said.
“He's confused. You've been filling his head with nonsense.””
“I haven't seen him alone in three weeks.””
“Exactly. You don't know what happens in my house anymore.””
Leo began to cry harder.
“No! Daddy said I couldn't tell!””
The words hung in the air.
Judge Norris leaned forward.
“Leo, my name is Judge Norris. Nobody here is going to punish you for telling the truth. Would you like to sit with your guardian and speak to me?””
Leo shook his head.
“I want Mommy Audrey.””
The judge glanced at the court officer, who nodded.
“Then he may remain with her for now, provided everyone maintains order.””
I helped Leo sit beside me. He kept one hand wrapped around my fingers and the other pressed against the rabbit's faded blue ear.
“Sweetheart,” I whispered, “what happened?””
He stared at the floor.
“Clara said the baby was bad.””
My hand moved instinctively to my stomach.
“What do you mean?””
“She said your baby was going to take Daddy's money. She said when the baby came, there wouldn't be enough for me.””
I swallowed.
“Did she say anything else?””
Leo nodded.
“She said you were pretending to be sick so Daddy would feel sorry for you.””
Across the room, Clara stood.
“That is absolutely ridiculous!””
“Sit down,” Judge Norris ordered.
Clara sat, her mouth pressed into a thin line.
Leo continued in a whisper.
“Then she said you had to go away.””
A cold feeling spread through my chest.
“Go away where, sweetheart?””
“I don't know. She said Daddy would fix it.””
Julian stood again.
“Your Honor, I object to this entire spectacle. My son has been exposed to an emotionally unstable woman who is clearly trying to manipulate him.””
Margaret rose.
“My client has not had unsupervised contact with this child since the separation. Mr. Vance's accusation is unsupported.””
Julian pointed at me.
“She has always wanted to replace Leo's mother. She made that clear from the beginning.””
I looked at him in disbelief.
“His mother died, Julian. I never tried to replace her.””
“You wanted him to call you Mommy!””
“He chose that name himself!””
Leo suddenly reached down and picked up his rabbit.
“No,” he whispered.
Everyone turned toward him.
He pressed the rabbit against his chest.
“Mommy Audrey never told me what to call her. Daddy said I could call her whatever I wanted.””
Julian's expression flickered.
Leo looked up at the judge.
“Daddy said Clara would be my new mommy after the baby was born.””
Clara's face drained of color.
“That is not what I said!””
Leo shook his head.
“You said I had to call you Mommy, or you wouldn't let me have my rabbit anymore.””
I stared at the stuffed toy.
Its brown fur had worn thin around the paws. One button eye had been replaced with a small black stitch. Leo took it everywhere, even to the hospital when he visited me during my pregnancy.
“Why would she take your rabbit?”” I asked gently.
Leo hugged it tighter.
“Because it has the button.””
Julian went completely still.
Margaret looked from Leo to the toy.
“What button, sweetheart?””
Leo glanced at his father.
Then at Clara.
His lips trembled.
“The little button inside. Grandma showed me how to press it when I feel scared.””
Clara shot to her feet.
“Give me that rabbit!””
A court officer stepped between her and the child.
“Ma'am, sit down immediately.””
“It's mine!”” Clara shouted.
“That toy belongs in our house!””
Leo screamed and curled into my side.
Judge Norris's voice became ice-cold.
“Ms. Bennett, if you approach this child again, I will have you removed.””
Clara sank into her chair.
Julian looked as though someone had pulled the floor out from beneath him.
I brushed Leo's hair away from his forehead.
“Sweetheart, what does the button do?””
He swallowed.
“It remembers.””
“Remembers what?””
Leo slowly reached beneath the rabbit's loose seam.
His small fingers found something hidden inside the stuffing.
He pulled out a tiny black recording device.
“I pressed it when Daddy and Clara were talking,” he whispered.

Then he looked straight at his father.
“And I heard what they said about your medicine, Mommy Audrey.””
