Chapter 6: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

I stared at the screen.

The document was a parental consent form.

The heading mentioned educational decisions.

Below it were several statements.

One line stood out.

*I agree that Zoria Bennett will postpone enrollment and reconsider attending college outside the state.*

My name was at the bottom.

My signature was there.

My stomach turned.

“That’s not my signature.””

Zoria looked closer.

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

“That’s fake.””

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then anger replaced the shock.

I grabbed my keys.

“Where are you going?””

“To talk to your mother.””

Zoria stood.

“Dad, don’t go alone.””

I looked at her.

She was still my little girl.

But somehow, overnight, she had become the person protecting me.

“I’m not going there to fight.””

I picked up the document.

“I’m going there to get answers.””

When I arrived home, Vanessa was sitting in the living room.

She wasn’t surprised.

That bothered me.

“You found it.””

It wasn’t a question.

I held up the paper.

“Did you forge my signature?””

She looked away.

“I didn’t forge anything.””

“Then explain this.””

Silence.

“Vanessa.””

She sighed.

“You would have never agreed.””

The words hit harder than an admission.

“So you did.””

“I did what I had to do.””

I stared at her.

“You signed my name.””

“I made a decision for our family.””

“No.””

My voice became louder.

“You made a decision for yourself.””

She stood.

“You don’t understand the pressure I was under.””

“What pressure?””

She looked frustrated.

“Everyone always praised Zoria. Everyone always said she was going places.””

“And?””

“And Kendra was left behind.””

I shook my head.

“Kendra is not behind because Zoria succeeded.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“You don’t know what it’s like watching your child feel like they’ll never measure up.””

I looked at her.

“Kendra needed support.””

“Yes.””

“And instead, you sacrificed Zoria.””

Vanessa looked down.

For the first time, she didn’t have an excuse ready.

I took a step back.

“How many times have you done this?””

Her eyes lifted.

“What?””

“How many decisions have you made for Zoria without telling me?””

She didn’t answer.

That silence was terrifying.

Then she whispered:

“Only the important ones.””

My heart sank.

“Only the important ones?””

She walked toward me.

“Michael, listen to me. If Zoria goes away, everything changes.””

“Good.””

She froze.

“What?””

“Everything is supposed to change.””

I looked at the woman I married.

“She’s eighteen. She earned this.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You’re choosing her.””

I stared at her.

“No.””

I picked up the fake document.

“I’m choosing the truth.””

Her face hardened.

“You’ll regret this.””

Before I could respond, my phone rang.

It was an unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice spoke.

“Is this Michael Bennett?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Rachel. I work with Northwestern’s scholarship review office.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She had gone completely still.

Rachel continued.

“Mr. Bennett, we received new information regarding your daughter’s scholarship.””

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“What kind of information?””

A pause.

Then:

“We found evidence that someone attempted to interfere with her enrollment.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked away.

Rachel’s voice became more serious.

“And there’s one more thing you need to know.””

My heart pounded.

“What?””

“We discovered that this wasn’t the first time someone tried to alter Zoria’s academic records.””

The room went silent.

I slowly turned toward my wife.

May you like

Because suddenly, I wasn’t wondering what Vanessa had done.

I was wondering how long she had been doing it.
