Chapter 10: The Sister Who Carried the Secret

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The name on the document sat between us like a weight.

*Kendra Bennett.*

My eyes moved from the paper to Zoria.

My daughter looked completely broken.

Not angry.

Not even surprised.

Just hurt.

Because betrayal from an enemy was painful.

But betrayal from someone you loved was different.

“Kendra?”” Zoria whispered.

Mrs. Ellis nodded slowly.

“I know how this looks.””

“No,” Zoria said quietly.

She stared at the document.

“It looks exactly like what it is.””

I reached for her hand.

But she pulled it back.

Not from me.

From the world.

“Why would she do this?””

Mrs. Ellis sighed.

“That’s what I wanted to understand.””

She opened another folder.

“After I noticed the changes, I spoke with Kendra.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did she say?””

“She was crying.””

Zoria looked away.

Mrs. Ellis continued.

“She told me she felt like she was disappearing.””

I frowned.

“Disappearing?””

“Yes.””

She looked at Zoria.

“Kendra believed everyone saw her as the girl who wasn’t good enough.””

Zoria’s expression softened for half a second.

Then the pain returned.

“That doesn’t explain this.””

“No,” Mrs. Ellis agreed.

“It doesn’t.””

She placed another document on the table.

“This does.””

It was a printed conversation.

Between Vanessa and Kendra.

I read the first few lines.

My hands became cold.

*Mom: If Zoria leaves, everyone will forget about us.*

*Kendra: I don’t want her to hate me.*

*Mom: She won’t know. She’ll understand eventually.*

I looked up.

Vanessa had manipulated both of them.

But then I saw Kendra’s response.

*Kendra: What if we’re ruining her life?*

And Vanessa’s reply.

*Mom: Sometimes people have to sacrifice for family.*

Zoria covered her face.

“I knew it.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“She made us both believe we were the problem.””

The words were quiet.

But they were true.

Kendra had been jealous.

Zoria had been hurt.

And Vanessa had used both wounds to create a disaster.

When we arrived home, Kendra was sitting on the front steps.

She stood immediately when she saw us.

“I know.””

Nobody answered.

She wiped her eyes.

“I know you know.””

Zoria stopped walking.

“Why?””

Kendra looked at her.

And for the first time, I saw guilt instead of jealousy.

“I was scared.””

Zoria laughed bitterly.

“Scared?””

“Yes.””

Kendra’s voice cracked.

“Do you know what it feels like watching someone get everything you wanted?””

Zoria stared at her.

“No.””

The answer surprised Kendra.

“No?””

“No,” Zoria said.

“Because I was too busy wondering why my own sister kept acting like my happiness was something I had stolen.””

Kendra looked down.

“I never hated you.””

“Then why did you help Mom?””

Kendra’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because she told me you would leave us.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“She told me you would go to college and forget about us,” Kendra said.

“She told me Dad would finally realize I was just the extra child.””

I looked at her.

“Kendra…”

“I know it was wrong.””

Her voice broke.

“I know nothing excuses it.””

Zoria crossed her arms.

“You changed my records.””

Kendra nodded.

“I did.””

The honesty hurt more.

“I logged into the account once.””

Zoria stared.

“Once?””

“I didn’t know what Mom had already done.””

Kendra wiped her face.

“She told me she only wanted to delay things. She said you would still go eventually.””

I looked at her.

“And you believed that?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

A long silence followed.

“Then why?””

Kendra looked at Zoria.

“Because I was jealous.””

Nobody spoke.

“I hated that I was jealous,” she whispered.

“You worked harder than me. You deserved everything.””

Zoria looked away.

“But every time someone praised you, I felt smaller.””

She swallowed.

“Mom noticed.””

Of course she did.

Vanessa had found the weakness.

And she had fed it.

That evening, Kendra sat at the kitchen table and gave us everything.

Passwords.

Messages.

Copies of conversations.

Every piece of evidence.

But one message stopped me.

It was from Vanessa.

Sent only three days before graduation.

*If Zoria finds out, tell her you acted alone. I’ll handle your father.*

I stared at the screen.

Kendra saw my expression.

“That’s why I’m telling the truth.””

I looked at her.

“Why now?””

She cried silently.

“Because when I saw her wearing that apron…”

Her voice broke.

“I realized Mom didn’t save me.””

She looked toward Zoria.

“She destroyed both of us.””

Then my phone rang.

It was Rachel from Northwestern.

I answered immediately.

“Mr. Bennett?””

“Yes?””

“We completed our preliminary review.””

I stood.

“And?””

Her voice became serious.

“Your daughter’s scholarship can be reinstated.””

Zoria covered her mouth.

But Rachel wasn’t finished.

“There is one problem.””

My smile disappeared.

“What problem?””

“The university needs confirmation that Zoria can make her own educational decisions.””

I frowned.

“Of course she can.””

A pause.

Then Rachel said:

“Mr. Bennett, there is a legal restriction currently attached to her student file.””

My blood ran cold.

“What restriction?””

“The file states that a parent has authority over her enrollment choices.””

I looked at Zoria.

“Who added it?””

May you like

Rachel answered quietly.

“Your wife.””
