Chapter 12: The Betrayal Inside My Own Home

I sat frozen.

“My account?””

“Yes.””

Daniel’s voice was careful.

“Your personal family education account.””

I looked at my hands.

The account I created when Zoria was fourteen.

The one I used to organize her school information.

The one I barely touched because Vanessa always handled the paperwork.

“How?””

“We’re still investigating.””

I closed my eyes.

Then I remembered.

The night I created it.

Vanessa sitting beside me.

Watching.

As I typed the password.

At the time, it didn’t feel suspicious.

Why would it?

She was my wife.

I trusted her.

That trust suddenly felt like a weapon.

When I got home, Zoria was waiting.

She could tell from my face.

“What happened?””

I sat beside her.

“There’s more.””

She looked afraid.

“What?””

I told her.

She listened silently.

When I finished, she whispered:

“She planned it before I even got the scholarship.””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

I didn’t know.

And that was the hardest part.

Because anger is easier when you understand the reason.

But sometimes people hurt others for reasons they cannot even admit to themselves.

That evening, Kendra came over.

She looked different.

Not because anything about her had changed physically.

Because guilt had taken away the confidence she used to hide behind.

“I found something,” she said.

She handed me a flash drive.

“What is this?””

“Mom’s old computer backup.””

I looked at her.

“How did you get this?””

“She gave it to me.””

“Why?””

Kendra swallowed.

“She trusted me.””

The irony was painful.

“What’s on it?””

Kendra looked at Zoria.

“Everything.””

We opened the files.

Emails.

Notes.

Drafts.

Messages.

Years of planning.

Then we found one folder.

The name made Zoria freeze.

*College Decision.*

Inside were documents from when Zoria was sixteen.

I opened the first one.

It was a conversation between Vanessa and someone else.

Not Kendra.

Not a school employee.

Someone unknown.

The message said:

*She’s too ambitious. If she leaves, I lose control.*

I looked at Zoria.

Her face had gone pale.

Another message appeared.

*I need her to believe staying is her choice.*

My hands shook.

This wasn’t about Kendra.

It wasn’t about fairness.

It was about control.

Then another file opened automatically.

A recorded audio message.

Vanessa’s voice filled the room.

“I know Michael loves her. That’s why I can’t make him choose.””

A pause.

“She has to choose herself.””

Zoria covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

“Once she gives up the opportunity, she’ll never ask to leave again.””

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

Then came the final sentence.

The one that broke whatever remained of my trust.

“I’m doing this before Michael realizes he created a daughter who doesn’t need me anymore.””

The recording ended.

For a long moment, there was only silence.

Then Zoria whispered:

“She wasn’t afraid of losing me.””

I looked at my daughter.

“She was afraid I would become someone she couldn’t control.””

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man’s voice spoke.

“Mr. Bennett?””

“Yes?””

“This is Detective Morgan.””

My heart tightened.

“Detective?””

“We’re calling regarding documents connected to your family.””

I stood.

“What documents?””

A pause.

Then:

“We found evidence suggesting someone may have committed identity fraud using your name.””

I looked at Zoria.

The detective continued.

“And Mr. Bennett…”

“Yes?””

“We need to ask you about your wife.””

I gripped the phone.

“What about her?””

May you like

The detective’s voice became serious.

“We believe Vanessa Bennett may not have acted alone.””
