Chapter 7: The Six-Year-Old Boy at My Door

“Ethan is six?””

I repeated the words while staring at my phone.

Patricia stood beside the dining table, one hand pressed against her mouth.

Daniel looked as though someone had punched him.

“That means…” he began.

I finished the sentence.

“That means Ethan was born the same day as Noah.””

Patricia nodded slowly.

I grabbed my jacket.

“Let's go.””

“Marcus, wait,” Patricia said.

“You need to understand what you're walking into.””

“My mother is in my house with a child whose identity she's been hiding for six years. I'm done waiting.””

Daniel followed me outside.

Neither of us spoke during the drive.

When we reached my house, Vanessa's car was still in the driveway. My mother's SUV was parked behind it.

The front door was unlocked.

I walked inside.

“Mom?””

Nobody answered.

Then I heard a child's laughter.

It came from the living room.

I stepped around the corner.

My mother was sitting on the sofa.

Vanessa stood beside the fireplace.

And between them was a little boy wearing a blue sweater.

He was approximately six years old.

Dark hair.

Brown eyes.

A small scar above his right eyebrow.

He was playing with one of Noah's toy cars.

When he looked up, my entire body went still.

He had my father's eyes.

“Hello,” my mother said quietly.

I ignored her.

I looked at the child.

“What's your name?””

The boy smiled.

“Ethan.””

I crouched in front of him.

“Hi, Ethan. I'm Marcus.””

He tilted his head.

“Grandma says you're my brother.””

I looked at my mother.

“Your brother?””

She stood.

“Marcus, please. Not in front of him.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You've spent six years keeping this child hidden. You don't get to decide when we discuss it.””

Ethan looked between us.

“Did I do something wrong?””

My chest tightened.

“No, buddy. You didn't do anything.””

I turned to Vanessa.

“Where's Noah?””

“Upstairs.””

“Bring him down.””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Marcus…”

“Now.””

She disappeared up the stairs.

My mother approached me.

“Let me explain.””

I held up my hand.

“First, tell me why Ethan is six.””

She glanced at the boy.

“Because he was born on October 14, 2020.””

“Same day as Noah?””

“Yes.””

“Same hospital?””

She nodded.

I felt dizzy.

“Then whose baby is Noah?””

My mother looked toward Daniel.

“He's Rachel's biological son.””

Daniel staggered backward.

“What?””

My mother continued.

“Rachel gave birth to a boy that night. Vanessa gave birth to a boy. Margaret's medical guardian also delivered a child connected to Robert's family arrangements.””

I stared at her.

“Three babies?””

“Three.””

“And you changed their identities?””

“I didn't do it alone.””

“Who did?””

She looked away.

Before she could answer, Vanessa returned with Noah.

My son wore his favorite dinosaur pajamas.

He was holding a stuffed elephant.

“Daddy?””

I immediately crouched.

“Hey, buddy.””

He looked at Ethan.

“Who's that?””

Ethan smiled.

“I'm Ethan.””

Noah stared at him.

Then he looked at my mother.

“Grandma says he's my cousin.””

I felt something break inside me.

I looked at Evelyn.

“Stop telling children lies.””

She flinched.

Noah came closer and touched my shoulder.

“Daddy, are you mad?””

I swallowed hard.

“No, buddy. I'm just trying to understand something.””

My mother finally spoke.

“Marcus, I did what I thought was necessary.””

I stood.

“You stole babies' identities.””

“I protected them.””

“From whom?””

She looked at Daniel.

“From your father.””

Daniel frowned.

“My father?””

“Robert had enemies. People who wanted control of his money. When he discovered Ethan's medical condition, he feared someone would use the boy to manipulate the inheritance.””

I shook my head.

“So you switched three babies to protect an eight-million-dollar trust?””

“Money wasn't the only reason.””

“Then tell me the real reason!””

My mother finally broke down.

She sat on the sofa and covered her face.

“Because Robert told me that if the truth ever came out, the children would be separated.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

She looked at me through her tears.

“Because one of the babies wasn't supposed to survive.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stepped forward.

“What are you talking about?””

My mother looked at Ethan.

“Ethan was born with a severe heart defect. Margaret died shortly after delivery. Robert believed the baby would need years of expensive treatment.””

She paused.

“He arranged for Ethan to be raised under a different identity so nobody could connect him to the trust.””

“And Noah?”” I asked.

My mother lowered her head.

“Noah was born healthy. Rachel was overwhelmed. Vanessa wanted a child desperately. And I believed I could arrange things so every child would have a safe home.””

Vanessa started crying.

“You told me Noah was mine!””

My mother looked at her.

“I told you that you would raise him.””

“That isn't the same thing!””

Daniel moved toward Evelyn.

“Where is my biological daughter?””

My mother closed her eyes.

“Rachel has her.””

Daniel stared.

“Then who's Noah?””

“Rachel's biological son.””

Daniel looked at Noah.

His face crumpled.

He had spent six years believing he had a son.

Now he was learning that the little boy standing in front of him was someone else's child.

I stepped between them.

“Don't.””

Daniel stopped.

Noah was watching us.

He didn't understand any of it.

And I refused to let him become another victim of the adults in that room.

Then Ethan tugged at my mother's sleeve.

“Grandma?””

She looked down.

“What's wrong, sweetheart?””

He held up a folded piece of paper.

“Is this the picture you told me not to show anyone?””

My mother went completely pale.

I took the paper.

It was a photograph of three newborn babies lying beside one another.

On the back, someone had written:

Three children. Three identities. One secret.

And beneath that sentence was a name.

*Peter Lawson.*

My mother's face crumpled.

“Where did you get that?””

Ethan pointed toward the hallway.

“From the doctor.””
