Chapter 14: The Truth My Mother Couldn't Hide
I called Evelyn immediately.
She answered after the first ring.
“Marcus?””
“Where are you?””
“At home.””
“Don't move.””
A pause.
“What happened?””
“I found the original DNA report.””
Silence.
Then my mother whispered, “Oh, sweetheart.””
“Don't.””
“Marcus, please let me explain.””
“I'm coming over.””
I ended the call.
Daniel and Isabella followed me.
We found my mother sitting at her kitchen table.
Three cups of tea were arranged neatly in front of her.
She looked at the documents in my hand and immediately began crying.
“You found it.””
I placed the report on the table.
“Tell me the truth.””
She nodded.
Then she began speaking.
“Your father discovered that Richard was stealing from the family trust. He also discovered that Thomas had secretly returned to Illinois.””
I sat down.
“Why does the DNA report say I'm Noah's father?””
“Because you are.””
I looked at her.
“Then why did everyone tell me otherwise?””
She wiped her cheeks.
“Because Richard wanted to make it appear that Noah belonged to Daniel's family. He believed that if Noah's biological relationship to you was concealed, he could manipulate the trust without triggering the original beneficiary conditions.””
I frowned.
“But why would Daniel agree?””
“Daniel didn't know the entire plan. He believed the first DNA report was genuine.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Evelyn, you told me Noah was my son.””
“I know.””
“You let me believe that for six years!””
She lowered her head.
“I was trying to protect Marcus.””
I laughed bitterly.
“By destroying every relationship around me?””
My mother reached for my hand.
I pulled away.
“Tell me about the babies.””
She took a deep breath.
“Vanessa gave birth to Noah. Rachel gave birth to Lily. Margaret gave birth to Ethan and another boy.””
I stared.
“Four children?””
She nodded.
“Four babies were involved in the hospital records. Richard changed their identification documents to hide the connections between the families.””
“Where is Margaret's second son?””
My mother looked toward the window.
“I don't know.””
“You're lying.””
“I swear I don't know where he is.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“Then why did Richard pay Peter Lawson?””
“Because Peter knew the second child survived.””
My mother finally revealed that the original hospital records had been divided into several separate files.
One was kept by Richard.
One was stored at the lake house.
And one was given to Margaret.
She believed Margaret still possessed the final document.
I looked at the clock.
“We're going to see her.””
My mother shook her head.
“There's something else.””
I closed my eyes.
“Of course there is.””
She opened a small drawer and removed an old envelope.
It contained a photograph of my father holding me as a baby.
On the back, he had written:
To Marcus. My first son. Never let the mistakes of the adults become the burden of the children.
My throat tightened.
My mother continued.
“Robert knew about the affairs. He knew about Daniel. He knew about Isabella.
He knew Thomas had returned. But he never wanted any of you to suffer because of his choices.””
“Then why didn't he tell us?””
“Because he was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Of losing the family.””
I looked at her.
“You lost it anyway.””
She began sobbing.
Then my phone rang.
It was an unfamiliar number.
“Mr. Williams?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Sarah Collins. I'm the administrator at Lakeside Care Center. Your aunt Patricia gave me your number.””
“What is it?””
“Margaret Collins has asked to see you.””
I looked at Daniel.
“When?””
“Today. She says she has something important to tell you about the second baby.””
Margaret was sitting beside a window when we arrived.
She was frail, with white hair and thin hands.
But when I entered the room, she recognized me immediately.
“Marcus.””
I approached slowly.
“You know who I am?””
She smiled sadly.
“You have Robert's eyes.””
Daniel stood beside me.
Margaret looked at him.
“And you must be Daniel.””
He nodded.
She reached for his hand.
“I'm sorry.””
Daniel swallowed.
“Did you have two boys?””
Margaret closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
“Where is the other one?””
She looked at me.
“Your father took him.””
I frowned.
“Robert?””
She nodded.
“He believed the boy would be safer away from the family. He arranged for another couple to raise him.””
“Who?””
Margaret opened the drawer beside her bed.
She removed a small photograph.
It showed a young couple standing outside a house.
The man was holding a baby.
The woman was smiling.
On the back was a name.
*James and Laura Carter.*
Daniel went pale.
“Carter?””
Margaret nodded.
“James was your father's closest friend. He raised the boy as his own.””
Daniel took the photograph.
“What's the child's name?””
Margaret whispered:
“Daniel.””
Nobody moved.
Daniel stared at her.
“What?””
She began crying.
“Your father was your biological father. But he wasn't the man who raised you.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
Margaret continued.
“James Carter adopted you. Your mother knew the truth. She agreed to let you grow up believing James was your biological father because Robert wanted you protected.””
Daniel looked as though he might collapse.
“My mother never told me.””
Margaret reached into another drawer.
She pulled out a final document.
It was a DNA report.
Robert Williams.
Daniel Carter.
Probability of paternity: 99.99%.
I looked at Daniel.
His entire life had been rewritten.
His name.
His parentage.
His relationship with me.
Then Margaret turned toward me.
“But there is one more thing you must understand.””
I leaned closer.
“What?””
She pointed to the photograph of James and Laura Carter.
“The woman standing beside James isn't his wife.””
I frowned.
“Then who is she?””
Margaret's voice dropped.
“Vanessa's biological mother.””
I felt the room spin.
“That's impossible.””
Margaret shook her head.
“Vanessa was adopted by James Carter's family. She and Daniel grew up believing they were unrelated. But Richard knew the truth.””
Daniel looked horrified.
“Why?””
Margaret reached for my hand.
“Because Richard had been arranging marriages, inheritances, and family connections for years. He wanted the trust controlled by people he could manipulate.””
I stared at the report.
Then I asked the question nobody wanted to answer.
“Did Vanessa know Daniel was her biological brother?””
Margaret closed her eyes.
“No.””
She paused.
“But someone told her three years ago.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
May you like
Margaret looked directly at me.
“Your mother.””
