Chapter 5: The Phone That Was Never Mine
The phone vibrated again.
I stood in front of the metal cabinet, staring at the lock.
Vanessa had stopped speaking.
For the first time since I had arrived home, she seemed unable to manufacture another excuse.
“Open it,” I said.
“No.””
“Why is there a locked cabinet in my basement containing a phone you don't want me to see?””
“It's personal.””
“Then you won't mind explaining why it's hidden behind a security device.””
She looked toward the stairs.
I moved between her and the exit.
“Don't leave.””
“You cannot detain me in my own home.””
“I'm asking you a question.””
“And I'm telling you to mind your own business!””
Her voice cracked against the concrete walls.
Upstairs, Mia called my name.
“Daddy?””
I immediately turned toward the staircase.
“I'm here, sweetheart.””
“Can I come down?””
“No, baby. Stay upstairs for me.””
Vanessa used the moment to slip past me.
I heard her shoes pounding up the stairs, followed by a bedroom door slamming.
I didn't chase her.
Mia came first.
I returned to the cabinet and examined the lock. It was an inexpensive combination lock, the kind used on small office lockers. Beside it, someone had attached a battery-powered security sensor.
I photographed everything.
Then I called Daniel.
“There's a locked cabinet in my basement. I've found documents involving Mia's inheritance and a proposed transfer of financial authority to Vanessa's brother.””
“Don't touch anything else,” Daniel said.
“Photograph the cabinet, the documents, and their locations. I'm sending someone to preserve the evidence properly.””
“There's a phone inside.””
“Do you know whose?””
“No.””
“Then don't assume. Vincent, I need you to understand something. If the documents are altered or part of a broader fraud, we need to preserve the original evidence. Don't give Vanessa an opportunity to claim you tampered with it.””
I looked at the cabinet.
“What if she's destroying something right now?””
“Is there any immediate danger to Mia?””
“No. She's upstairs.””
“Then stay with her. I'll be there shortly.””
I ended the call and climbed the stairs.
Mia was sitting on the landing, just outside her bedroom.
She had disobeyed me, but I couldn't bring myself to scold her.
She looked at my empty hands.
“Did you find Mommy's pictures?””
“Yes, sweetheart. They're safe.””
“All of them?””
“I'll check every one.””
She nodded, then looked toward Vanessa's closed bedroom door.
“Is she angry?””
I knelt beside her.
“She might be. But her feelings are not your responsibility.””
Mia studied my face.
“Are you sure?””
I thought about how many times she must have asked herself that question.
“Yes,” I said.
“I'm sure.””
The doorbell rang.
Dr. Harris arrived carrying his medical bag, accompanied by a child welfare specialist named Ms. Bennett, whom Daniel had contacted through his office.
I brought them upstairs.
Dr. Harris examined Mia in the guest bedroom while Ms. Bennett sat nearby, speaking gently and allowing Mia to answer at her own pace.
I remained close enough for my daughter to see me.
When Dr. Harris examined her wrists, Mia flinched.
“I'm sorry,” she whispered.
“You don't need to apologize,” he told her.
“I'm going to be very gentle.””
He documented the visible injuries and recommended further evaluation at the hospital. I agreed immediately.
Ms. Bennett asked Mia whether she felt safe at home.
Mia glanced at me.
“You can tell her the truth,” I said.
She twisted the teddy bear's ribbon.
“Not when Vanessa is here.””
Ms. Bennett nodded.
“Thank you for telling me. We'll work with your father to make sure you have a safe place.””
After the examination, I arranged for Mia to be taken to the hospital with me. Ms. Bennett advised us on the appropriate next steps and remained available while Daniel coordinated the legal response.
Before we left, I went to collect Mia's jacket.
Vanessa's bedroom door opened.
She stood there wearing a cream sweater and dark trousers, her hair tied back. She looked composed again.
“I want to come with you,” she said.
“No.””
“Vincent, I'm her future stepmother.””
“You're not marrying me.””
She swallowed.
“Don't make a permanent decision because you're angry.””
“This isn't anger. It's a decision about my daughter's safety.””
She glanced toward Mia, who was waiting beside the elevator.
For a brief moment, her expression softened.
“Mia, sweetheart, you know I love you.””
My daughter shrank behind my leg.
Vanessa's expression hardened again.
“Fine,” she said.
“Take her to the hospital. Let strangers fill her head with nonsense. But when she starts asking for me, don't pretend I didn't try.””
I led Mia into the elevator without answering.
At the hospital, the staff examined her injuries and recorded their findings. Mia stayed close to me throughout the process, her small hand never leaving mine.
While we waited for the doctor to finish his assessment, my phone rang.
It was Daniel.
“I've spoken to the attorney,” he said.
“The documents you photographed raise serious concerns. We're preserving everything and arranging a formal review of the financial records.””
“What about the phone?””
“Has anyone accessed it?””
“No.””
“Good. A security specialist is on the way to your building. Don't try to open the cabinet yourself.””
I glanced at Mia.
“Daniel, I need to know why Richard was involved.””
“We'll find out.””
After the call, I sat beside my daughter.
She rested her head against my arm, exhausted.
“Daddy?””
“I'm here.””
“Can I tell you something else?””
“Anything.””
She looked toward the hospital room door.
“Vanessa has another phone. She keeps it in her purse. Sometimes she talks to someone after she thinks I'm asleep.””
“Do you know who she talks to?””
Mia shook her head.
“But yesterday, I heard her say your name. Then she said the wedding had to happen before you found out.””
My blood ran cold.
“Found out what, sweetheart?””
She squeezed my fingers.
“I don't know. But she said if you changed your mind, Uncle Richard would make sure you couldn't take me away from her.””
Before I could ask another question, my phone buzzed.
Daniel had sent me a photograph.
It showed the first page of a financial document retrieved from the secure records at his office.
The title read: *Proposed Amendment to the Claire Hale Family Trust.*
Beneath it was a list of proposed beneficiaries.
My name.
Vanessa's name.
Richard's name.
And a final clause authorizing the release of funds upon the occurrence of a specific event.
I read the clause twice.
Then I felt the floor disappear beneath me.
May you like
The event wasn't our wedding.
It was my death.
