Chapter 8: The Letter Emily Never Sent

By sunrise, I had made three decisions.

First, Lily would not return to my house until the police had assessed the threat and we had a safe plan.

Second, every document connected to Emily's estate would be preserved and reviewed by my attorney.

Third, I would no longer accept fragments of the truth from Vanessa and call them explanations.

At nine o'clock, Robert met me at his office. He had already spoken with the police about the threatening messages and arranged for a specialist to review the documents we had found.

He listened without interrupting as I described Vanessa's phone call.

When I finished, he leaned back in his chair.

"We need to be careful here, Daniel. Vanessa may be telling the truth about some things while concealing others. The same applies to Marianne and Marcus.""

"What about the hospital records?""

"I've submitted the appropriate requests. Until we receive them, we can't assume the messages accurately describe what happened.""

I slid Emily's letter across his desk.

"This is from the box of her belongings. She mentioned a first child.""

Robert read the letter twice.

"Did you know Emily was pregnant before Lily?""

"No.""

"Did she ever mention a miscarriage, an adoption, or a previous child?""

"Never.""

He studied the handwriting.

"This letter suggests she was worried about the way people might interpret her past. But it doesn't establish what happened.""

I nodded.

"I understand.""

Robert placed the letter inside a protective sleeve.

"We'll preserve it. Now, tell me exactly what Vanessa said about the safe deposit box.""

I repeated the details.

Robert made a note.

"If the bank can confirm the box exists and Vanessa is authorized to access it, we can ask her to preserve the contents voluntarily. We should not assume you have a right to access it simply because the documents concern Emily.""

I agreed.

An hour later, Vanessa arrived at Robert's office.

She looked exhausted. Her hair was uncombed, and she wore the same gray coat she had worn the night before.

She carried a thick folder.

"I brought everything I have," she said.

Robert gestured toward a chair.

"Before we discuss the contents, I need to be clear. This meeting is not an opportunity to pressure Daniel, coordinate stories, or interfere with any investigation. We will preserve the records and address any legal issues appropriately.""

Vanessa nodded.

She opened the folder.

The first document was a printed email from Marianne, dated six months before Vanessa and I married.

You cannot tell Daniel about the baby. Emily wanted that secret buried, and it must remain buried if Lily is to have any chance of a normal life.

I looked up.

"Why did you marry me, Vanessa?""

She pressed her lips together.

"I met you through Emily's estate attorney. I was helping organize some of her belongings.""

"You told me we met at a charity event.""

"We did meet there. But I already knew who you were.""

"How long had you known?""

"Almost a year.""

I felt the betrayal settle deeper.

Every memory of our courtship seemed to change shape.

The restaurant where she had promised to love Lily.

The first family vacation.

The night she had comforted me when Lily asked whether her mother could return.

Had Vanessa been comforting me because she cared, or because she needed to remain close enough to control what I learned?

"Did you ever love me?"" I asked.

Her eyes filled.

"Yes.""

"Did you ever love Lily?""

Vanessa looked down.

"I wanted to.""

"That isn't the same thing.""

She began crying.

"No. It isn't.""

Robert interrupted gently.

"We need to focus on the records. Vanessa, you mentioned a letter from Emily.""

She reached into the folder and removed a sealed envelope.

The front bore my name.

My breath caught.

I recognized Emily's handwriting immediately.

Daniel.

Not my full name. Not a formal greeting.

Just Daniel, written in the same delicate script she had used on birthday cards and notes left beside my coffee.

"Where did you get this?"" I asked.

"Marianne gave it to me shortly after Emily died," Vanessa replied.

"She told me to destroy it.""

"Why didn't you?""

"Because I couldn't.""

Robert examined the envelope without opening it.

"Has this been opened before?""

"Yes," Vanessa admitted.

"I read it.""

I stared at her.

"What does it say?""

She wiped her face.

"Emily says she was going to tell you everything. She says the first child wasn't dead, and that someone had arranged for the baby to be raised elsewhere.""

"Who?""

"She doesn't name the person in the letter.""

"Then why keep it from me?""

"Marianne told me the child had been adopted by a family who believed the adoption was legitimate. She said revealing the truth could destroy that person's life.""

I leaned forward.

"Was that true?""

"I don't know.""

Robert opened the envelope carefully.

Inside was a handwritten letter, dated three weeks before Emily died.

He read it silently, then passed it to me.

My dearest Daniel,

There is something I should have told you years ago. Before we were married, I became pregnant. I was young, frightened, and convinced I had no right to ask anyone for help.

My sister Marianne told me she knew a family who would give the baby a better life. She said the arrangement would be temporary, just until I was ready. I believed her.

But when I changed my mind, the baby was gone.

I stopped reading.

My hands were shaking.

I forced myself to continue.

I searched for months. Marianne told me the adoption was final and that contacting the family would only cause pain. I never forgave myself for believing her.

When Lily was born, I thought I could finally build a peaceful life. I wanted to tell you everything, but I was afraid that my past would change the way you saw me.

If you are reading this, I may no longer be here to explain. Please don't let Marianne convince you that the people we love can be owned, transferred, or traded.

Lily is your daughter in every way that matters. Whatever happened before her birth, please protect her from anyone who would use her as leverage.

There is one more thing you must know. The baby was not given to a stranger. The family who took the child had been connected to us for years.

The letter ended there.

No name.

No signature beyond Emily's familiar initials.

I lowered the page.

"The family had been connected to us for years," I repeated.

"What does that mean?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"Marianne never told me.""

Robert pointed to the folder.

"Is there anything else?""

Vanessa removed another sheet.

It was a handwritten note addressed to Emily.

The ink had faded, but the signature was clear.

*Marcus Bell.*

I read the note aloud.

"Emily, I know what Marianne has done. I can help you find the child, but you must trust me enough to let me explain.""

The note was dated four months before Emily died.

On the back, someone had written a telephone number and an address.

Robert copied both details.

"We'll verify this information before making contact," he said.

Vanessa looked at me.

"Daniel, I swear I didn't know what Marianne had done to Lily. I thought I was protecting her.""

I folded my arms.

"Then why did you let her go hungry?""

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

"Why did you lock her in the pantry?""

Her eyes filled again.

"Because Marianne told me that if Lily became too attached to you, the court would never allow her to leave. She said I had to make Lily seem difficult, unstable, and impossible to manage.""

The room went completely silent.

Robert set down his pen.

"Are you saying you deliberately mistreated a child to influence a custody proceeding?""

Vanessa nodded, crying.

"I thought it would only be temporary.""

I stared at her.

"You made a child believe her father would abandon her.""

"I know.""

"No, Vanessa. You knew exactly what you were doing.""

She covered her face.

I stood and walked to the window.

I could no longer tell whether the woman I had married had ever been the person she pretended to be.

Robert gathered the documents.

"Vanessa, you need independent legal advice. We will preserve these records and provide them to the appropriate authorities as required. Daniel, we'll continue protecting Lily's interests through the proper legal process.""

Vanessa rose slowly.

Before she reached the door, she turned toward me.

"There is one thing Emily told me that isn't in the letter.""

I didn't answer.

"She said the person who took her first child had a reason to fear what that child might inherit.""

I turned.

"What inheritance?""

Vanessa's face had gone pale.

"Emily believed the child was entitled to a share of a family estate. She thought Marianne had arranged the separation because she wanted to control the money.""

Robert immediately asked for the name of the estate.

Vanessa shook her head.

"I never learned it.""

She left the office.

I sat back down and stared at Emily's letter.

Then my phone rang.

An unfamiliar number appeared on the screen.

I answered.

A young woman spoke in a quiet, uncertain voice.

"Is this Daniel Mercer?""

"Yes. Who is this?""

"My name is Olivia Bell. My father is Marcus Bell.""

I gripped the phone.

"What do you want, Olivia?""

She took a shaky breath.

"My father told me to contact you if anyone ever started asking questions about a baby born before your daughter.""

My heart hammered against my ribs.

"Why?""

"Because he says he knows where that child is.""

I stood.

"Does he know who took the baby?""

There was a long silence.

Then Olivia whispered, "Yes.""

"Who?""

"Your wife's sister.""

I closed my eyes.

"Marianne.""

"No," Olivia replied.

"Not just Marianne.""

May you like

She lowered her voice.

"There's another person involved. Someone who has been living in your family for years.""
