Chapter 13: The Daughter Vanessa Stole From Her Own Sister

“Read that again,” I told Robert.

He held the investigator's report between us in the car park outside Dr. Whitaker's house.

“Vanessa Cole registered a child under her own name six years before she married you. The child's original name was Lily Cross.””

I stared at the page.

My daughter was Lily Mercer.

Emily had been Emily Cross before she married me.

And now an official record appeared to connect my wife to a child named Lily Cross.

“How can there be two girls with the same name?”” I asked.

“We don't know that there are,” Robert replied.

“The record could have been amended, misfiled, or deliberately altered. We need the original documentation before drawing conclusions.””

I looked toward the road.

“Then let's find it.””

“Daniel, we need to do this carefully. If Vanessa registered one of Emily's twins under a false identity, that's serious. But the records we have don't establish which child was registered or whether the name was legally changed.””

I understood.

I also knew that every hour mattered while Marianne was trying to influence the custody proceedings.

Robert called the investigator and asked him to verify the birth certificate through the relevant records office. He also arranged for the documents from Dr. Whitaker to be preserved and submitted through the appropriate channels.

Then he called Vanessa's attorney.

Within an hour, we had an appointment to review additional records Vanessa had agreed to disclose.

She was waiting in a conference room when we arrived.

Her face was pale, and her hands were clasped tightly in front of her.

I remained standing.

“Tell me why your name is on a birth certificate for a child named Lily Cross.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Because Marianne told me to change it.””

“Change whose name?””

“Emily's second baby.””

My stomach tightened.

“Which baby?””

“I don't know.””

“You were there. You held the child. You signed the paperwork.””

“I was twenty-two, Daniel. Marianne told me the child would be taken away if I didn't cooperate.””

“And you believed her?””

“She showed me documents saying Emily had surrendered her parental rights. She said the arrangement was legal and that I was helping a child escape a terrible future.””

I leaned forward.

“Whose future?””

Vanessa began crying.

“Marianne said Emily's children would inherit money from your father's estate. She believed one of the babies could claim the trust if the biological connection was established. She wanted the children separated so neither could challenge her control.””

Robert interrupted.

“Vanessa, do you have any documents showing the legal basis for the transfer?””

She nodded and removed a folder from her bag.

Inside were copies of adoption forms, hospital records, and a letter bearing Marianne's signature.

The letter instructed Vanessa to register the child under a different name and keep the original birth records confidential.

Robert examined the papers.

“These documents will need independent verification. Some appear incomplete.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I know.””

I stared at her.

“Did you raise the baby?””

“For a few months.””

“What happened afterward?””

Her lips trembled.

“Marianne took the child back.””

“Why?””

“Because she discovered that Emily had left a letter naming the biological father. She believed the child could eventually claim the inheritance, and she didn't want me making decisions about the baby's future.””

“Where did she take the child?””

“I don't know.””

“You expect me to believe you don't know where a child you helped register went?””

Vanessa flinched.

“I know how it sounds. I was young, frightened, and completely under Marianne's control.””

“You were old enough to sign documents. You were old enough to understand that a baby wasn't a possession.””

She looked down.

“You're right.””

I hadn't expected her to agree.

For a moment, I saw the woman who had once sat beside me after Emily's funeral and promised that Lily would never feel alone.

Then I remembered my daughter on the kitchen floor.

“Did you know Lily was Emily's other twin?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Not when I met you. I only knew Marianne had arranged for one child to disappear. When I saw Lily, I wondered whether she might be the other twin, but I never had proof.””

“And instead of finding out, you punished her.””

“I thought Marianne would take my children if I refused to cooperate.””

“Your children were afraid of you, Vanessa.””

She covered her face.

“I know.””

Robert gathered the papers.

“We'll preserve these records and make them available to the appropriate authorities. Vanessa, you need to continue cooperating through your attorney.””

She nodded.

Before we left, she called my name.

“Daniel.””

I turned.

“There is one thing I never told Marianne.””

“What?””

“When I registered the baby, I kept a photograph.””

She opened her purse and removed a small, faded picture.

It showed a newborn wrapped in a yellow blanket.

On the back, someone had written a name.

*Lily.*

Beneath it was a date.

The date matched the day Emily had given birth to the twins.

I stared at the photograph.

“Is this my daughter?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don't know. But the baby had a small crescent-shaped birthmark behind her left ear.””

My heart stopped.

Lily had the same birthmark.

I had noticed it when she was a baby, a pale crescent tucked beneath her blond hair. Emily used to kiss it and call it her little moon.

I looked at Robert.

He said nothing, but I could see that he understood the significance.

The photograph did not prove the identity of the child.

It did, however, give us a specific detail that could be compared against medical records.

I took a careful breath.

“Where is the original birth certificate?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Marianne has it.””

“Where?””

“I don't know exactly. But she once told me she kept important documents in a storage unit outside Columbus.””

Robert immediately wrote that down.

“Do you know the address?””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

Then she gave it to him.

We left the conference room and contacted the investigator, who began checking the information through lawful channels.

Two hours later, he called back.

The storage unit was registered to a company controlled by Marianne.

The investigator had also discovered that Marianne had recently arranged for several boxes to be moved from the facility.

One of the boxes had been delivered to a private law office.

Robert requested the records needed to establish what had been transferred and whether any documents could be obtained through the pending proceedings.

Then my phone rang.

It was Rachel.

“Daniel, Lily wants to talk to you.””

I answered immediately.

“Hey, sweetheart.””

“Daddy, when can I come home?””

I looked through the car window at the gray sky.

“Soon, baby. We're getting everything ready.””

“Can I bring my rabbit?””

I smiled despite everything.

“You can bring every rabbit you own.””

She giggled.

Then she grew quiet.

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“Am I still your little girl if I have another family somewhere?””

My eyes filled with tears.

I pressed the phone against my ear.

“Lily, listen to me. Nothing anyone discovers about the past can change the fact that I am your father. You don't have to earn my love, and you don't have to choose between people to make me happy.””

“Promise?””

“I promise I'll always love you.””

After the call, I sat silently for several minutes.

Whatever the documents revealed, Lily deserved to know that her identity was not a weapon.

She deserved a childhood in which dinner meant sitting at a table, not begging for crumbs.

She deserved to be loved without conditions.

Robert's phone rang again.

He listened, then slowly turned toward me.

“The investigator has located the attorney who received Marianne's boxes.””

“And?””

“The attorney has agreed to preserve the documents while we seek the appropriate order to examine them.””

“Does he have the original will?””

Robert nodded.

“And a sealed envelope addressed to you.””

My heart began pounding.

“What's inside?””

Robert read the note the attorney had provided.

“Apparently, Emily wrote it shortly before she died.””

May you like

He looked at me.

“And according to the attorney, the envelope contains the one thing Marianne never wanted you to see.””
