Chapter 14: The Final Betrayal
The name on the screen stayed there.
I read it again.
And again.
Because my brain refused to accept it.
*Daniel Carter.*
The man who claimed he came to expose Victoria.
The man who claimed he wanted to protect my children.
The man who pretended to be the only person telling me the truth.
He had been part of it.
Victoria stood up.
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“No, that’s impossible.””
I looked at her.
“You knew him better than anyone.””
She looked terrified.
“He lied to me too.””
Claire stared at the screen.
“Everyone was a piece.””
I closed the laptop.
“No.””
I stood.
“Not everyone.””
I picked up my phone.
I called Daniel.
He answered after one ring.
“James.””
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Did you know about Project Cole Legacy?””
Silence.
That was all I needed.
“Daniel.””
He sighed.
“You found it.””
“You were involved.””
“I was trying to fix it.””
“No.””
My voice hardened.
“You helped create it.””
Another pause.
Then he said:
“You don’t understand what happened.””
“Then explain.””
Daniel was quiet.
Finally:
“Your father contacted me years ago.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew I was Victoria’s weakness.””
My hands tightened.
“He used me.””
“And you agreed.””
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I was young. Angry. I wanted revenge against him.””
“Revenge?””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Your father destroyed my family too.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“My father worked for yours.””
The room went silent.
“He took the blame for one of your father’s crimes. He went to prison. He died there.””
I didn’t know what to say.
Daniel continued.
“I wanted to destroy everything your father built.””
“And you used Victoria.””
“Yes.””
“And me.””
Silence.
“Yes.””
The word hurt.
Even though I expected it.
“Why tell me anything?””
“Because eventually I realized something.””
“What?””
“You were the only person who could actually stop him.””
I looked at the flash drive.
“You could have told me years ago.””
“I tried.””
“When?””
“When your twins were born.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What happened?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Your father threatened me.””
“With what?””
“With your mother.””
I looked at Claire.
Daniel continued.
“He knew she was alive. He knew where she was.””
Claire closed her eyes.
“He used her as leverage.””
I felt anger rise.
Everyone had been trapped by him.
Everyone.
But innocent people still got hurt.
Emily.
My children.
Me.
“I don’t care why you did it.””
Daniel went quiet.
“You helped him.””
“I know.””
“And you don’t get to decide you’re a hero because you regret it.””
“I know.””
For the first time, he sounded broken.
“James…”
“What?””
“Your father has one final move.””
I froze.
“What?””
“The inheritance transfer.””
I frowned.
“The trust?””
“Yes.””
“What about it?””
“He created a clause that activates if he believes you failed.””
I looked at Victoria.
“What happens?””
Daniel whispered:
“He takes everything.””
I laughed.
“Let him.””
“No.””
His voice became urgent.
“You don’t understand.””
“What?””
“The trust doesn’t just control money.””
A cold feeling spread through me.
“What else?””
“The company.””
I waited.
“The employees.””
I waited.
“The legal rights over the Cole name.””
My jaw tightened.
“So?””
“So if he activates it, thousands of people lose everything.””
I looked at the documents.
My father had built a trap where every choice hurt someone.
If I fought him, people suffered.
If I surrendered, he won.
Then Daniel said:
“There is only one way to stop him.””
“What?””
“Reject the entire legacy.””
I went silent.
“The company. The money. Everything.””
Claire looked at me.
Victoria looked at me.
Daniel continued.
“He built his whole plan around you wanting what he created.””
I understood.
My father thought everyone had a price.
He thought I did too.
“What happens if I reject it?””
Daniel answered:
“The trust disappears.””
“And the company?””
“Gets transferred to the employees.””
I stared at the laptop.
My father’s empire.
Everything he killed and manipulated for.
Gone.
I knew what I had to do.
But before I could speak, the police station doors opened.
An officer rushed in.
“Mr. Cole.””
I turned.
“What happened?””
His face was serious.
“We received an emergency call.””
“From who?””
He hesitated.
Then:
“Your father.””
My heart stopped.
“What did he say?””
The officer looked at me.
“He said congratulations.””
A chill ran through me.
“Congratulations for what?””
May you like
The officer swallowed.
“He said you passed the final test.””
