Chapter 12: The Night Everything Changed

The police station was colder than I expected.

Maybe it was because I hadn’t slept.

Maybe it was because my entire life had collapsed in less than a week.

Or maybe it was because I was sitting across from my wife, waiting for her to explain the one thing I feared most.

The babies.

Victoria sat across from me.

No makeup.

No perfect dress.

No confident smile.

She looked like someone who had finally run out of places to hide.

“Tell me the truth.””

She looked down.

“I will.””

“Everything.””

She nodded.

“I owe you that.””

I leaned forward.

“Did you switch the birth certificates?””

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“Why?””

“Because Daniel’s name was on the original paperwork.””

I stared at her.

“So you changed them.””

“Yes.””

“To make me believe they were mine.””

“No.””

Her answer surprised me.

“No?””

She shook her head.

“I changed them because your father told me to.””

I went quiet.

“What?””

“He found out about Daniel before the twins were born.””

I remembered what Claire said.

What Michael said.

Everyone knew.

“He contacted you.””

“Yes.””

“What did he want?””

Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.

“He wanted the twins connected to you.””

“That makes no sense.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

“Then explain.””

She took a breath.

“Your father believed the only way to protect his legacy was through you.””

I frowned.

“My children?””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“You.””

I didn’t understand.

“He knew you would never become like him.””

That sentence shocked me.

“What?””

“He knew you had too much compassion.””

I laughed bitterly.

“After everything he did, you expect me to believe he admired that?””

“No.””

She looked away.

“He hated it.””

The words landed heavily.

“He wanted to break it.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

“Because he believed kindness made people weak.””

The room was silent.

Then I asked:

“What happened the night the twins were born?””

Victoria closed her eyes.

“I made a deal.””

My stomach dropped.

“With who?””

“With your father.””

“What deal?””

She whispered:

“I would hide the truth about Daniel.””

“And?””

“And he would leave you alone.””

I stared at her.

“But he didn’t.””

“No.””

Her tears fell.

“He never planned to.””

The anger came back.

“You knew he was alive.””

“Yes.””

“For years?””

“Yes.””

I stood up.

“You watched me live a lie.””

“I was scared.””

“You were scared?””

My voice cracked.

“My whole life was stolen.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

I walked toward the window.

“You don’t know what it feels like to realize your family was a performance.””

She whispered:

“I do.””

I turned.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“Because mine was too.””

For the first time, I saw something different in her.

Not excuses.

Not manipulation.

Regret.

“I thought I could control it.””

She shook her head.

“I thought I could take the money, protect myself, and keep you.””

“But?””

“But I underestimated him.””

The officer outside knocked.

“Mr. Cole?””

I looked over.

“Yes?””

“We found something at your house.””

My heart tightened.

“What?””

He stepped inside holding an evidence bag.

Inside was a small flash drive.

“We found this hidden in the nursery.””

I stared at it.

“Who found it?””

The officer hesitated.

“Your father left it behind.””

I looked at Victoria.

Then at the flash drive.

“What’s on it?””

The officer’s expression changed.

“Everything.””

I picked it up.

A tiny piece of plastic.

But it felt heavier than anything I had ever held.

Because I knew.

Whatever was on that drive would answer the final question.

Why my father destroyed our family.

Why Victoria betrayed me.

And why he had spent twenty years planning this.

I looked at the label written on it.
