Chapter 13: Project Cole Legacy
The flash drive sat on the table between us.
A tiny piece of plastic.
A small object that somehow carried the weight of twenty years of lies.
The officer left the room after telling me the digital team would make a copy of everything.
But I couldn’t wait.
Not anymore.
I needed answers.
I plugged the drive into my laptop.
For several seconds, nothing happened.
Then a folder appeared.
*PROJECT COLE LEGACY*
My hands went cold.
Inside were hundreds of files.
Financial records.
Videos.
Audio recordings.
Personal profiles.
My entire family reduced to documents.
I opened the first file.
A video appeared.
My father was sitting behind a desk.
Older.
But unmistakably alive.
He looked directly into the camera.
“James, if you are watching this, then the plan reached the final stage.””
I stopped breathing.
The video continued.
“I know you will hate me.””
I almost laughed.
That was an understatement.
“But hatred means you finally understand.””
The screen showed another folder.
“Your entire life has been designed around one purpose.””
I leaned closer.
“What purpose?””
My father answered his own question.
“To determine whether you were capable of carrying the Cole name.””
I closed my eyes.
Even now, he was still testing me.
The video continued.
“I built my empire by removing weakness. Your grandfather taught me that. I taught Michael that.””
I looked at Victoria.
She was watching silently.
“My mistake was your mother.””
The image froze for a moment.
Then my father continued.
“She believed morality mattered more than power.””
Claire looked away.
I knew those words hurt her.
“She tried to expose me. She tried to destroy everything I built.””
The video showed documents.
Bank transfers.
Secret accounts.
Names.
People I recognized.
Politicians.
Business partners.
Even family members.
“This is why I disappeared.””
My father leaned toward the camera.
“Not because I was afraid.””
A pause.
“Because I needed to see who would survive without me.””
I felt disgust rising.
“You destroyed everyone just to prove a point.””
The video continued.
“The first stage was Michael.””
A file opened automatically.
My uncle’s name appeared.
*SUBJECT: MICHAEL COLE*
“He was loyal but weak. He followed orders because he feared losing the family.””
I looked down.
Michael’s betrayal suddenly made more sense.
He wasn’t protecting me.
He was trapped.
The next file opened.
*SUBJECT: VICTORIA COLE*
My chest tightened.
“Victoria was chosen because she represented temptation.””
I looked at her.
She looked away.
“She wanted security. Status. A perfect life.””
My father smiled.
“She was predictable.””
Victoria whispered:
“He never saw me as a person.””
I didn’t respond.
Because I finally understood.
None of them were people to him.
They were pieces.
The video moved on.
Then my name appeared.
*SUBJECT: JAMES COLE*
The room became silent.
My father looked into the camera.
“James was the only variable I could not predict.””
I frowned.
“What?””
The video continued.
“You were raised with compassion. Honesty. Loyalty.””
A strange feeling hit me.
Was that regret?
No.
It couldn’t be.
“My goal was simple.””
The screen showed a document.
A legal agreement.
“If James chooses power over family, he becomes the next leader.””
Another document appeared.
“If James chooses family over power, the legacy ends.””
I stared.
The entire thing was a test.
A sick, cruel test.
My father’s voice continued.
“The twins were never about inheritance.””
My heart stopped.
“They were about James.””
I looked toward the nursery window.
“He had to choose whether blood mattered more than love.””
The video ended.
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Claire whispered:
“He wanted to know if you were like him.””
I stared at the laptop.
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“He wanted to prove I was.””
The next file opened automatically.
A final recording.
This one wasn’t my father.
It was Michael.
He appeared nervous.
“James, if you’re watching this, I failed.””
My throat tightened.
“I tried to stop him.””
Michael looked exhausted.
“I knew Dad’s plan was wrong, but I was too afraid to stand against him.””
He paused.
“There is one thing you need to know.””
I leaned forward.
“Your father didn’t create Project Cole Legacy alone.””
Michael looked directly into the camera.
“Someone helped him.””
My heart sank.
“Who?””
The video continued.
A name appeared.
A name that made Victoria cover her mouth.
A name that made Claire whisper:
“No…”
I stared at the screen.

Because the person who had helped my father destroy my family…
Was the one person nobody had suspected.
