Chapter 8: The Boardroom Battle

The next morning, Whitmore Dynamics looked different.

Or maybe I was the one who changed.

For years, I walked through those doors as Daniel’s wife.

People smiled.

People greeted me.

But they always looked past me.

Today, I walked in knowing exactly who I was.

The founder.

The majority owner.

The person whose name was written into every important document they had ignored.

Eleanor walked beside me.

“You ready?””

I looked at the glass building.

“Yes.””

Inside the lobby, employees whispered.

Some stopped talking when they saw me.

Others looked uncomfortable.

The engagement party from yesterday had already disappeared from the decorations.

No silver banner.

No flowers.

No celebration.

Just a company pretending nothing happened.

A receptionist approached.

“Mrs. Whitmore?””

I looked at her.

“Yes?””

She lowered her voice.

“I’m sorry about yesterday.””

I nodded.

“Thank you.””

She hesitated.

Then she said:

“For what it’s worth, many people here didn’t know.””

I believed her.

Because Daniel had always been good at controlling the story.

The elevator doors opened.

The boardroom was full.

Daniel was there.

Vanessa was there.

Six board members.

Three lawyers.

And a large screen showing the company logo.

Vanessa stood at the front.

She smiled when I entered.

“Claire.””

I took my seat.

“Vanessa.””

She looked amused.

“I’m surprised you came.””

I opened my folder.

“I’m surprised you thought I wouldn’t.””

A few board members looked uncomfortable.

Vanessa turned toward them.

“This meeting is about protecting the future of Whitmore Dynamics.””

I almost smiled.

“Interesting.””

She looked at me.

“What?””

“Yesterday you were protecting the future by announcing your engagement.””

Her expression hardened.

“This is not personal.””

“No.””

I placed the documents on the table.

“It’s much worse.””

Eleanor stood.

“We have evidence that the proposed ownership transfer was initiated through misleading documentation.””

The room became tense.

Vanessa’s lawyer immediately responded.

“That allegation is unsupported.””

Eleanor slid a folder across the table.

“Then you won’t mind reviewing it.””

The lawyer opened it.

His expression changed.

Daniel noticed.

“Wait.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Daniel.””

He stared at the papers.

“You knew?””

Her face remained calm.

“I knew what needed to happen.””

Daniel looked shocked.

“You said everything was legal.””

“It will be.””

I watched them.

And something became painfully obvious.

They were no longer a team.

They were two people trying to survive the same explosion.

Vanessa turned toward me.

“You think this proves something?””

I looked at her.

“It proves you tried to take something that wasn’t yours.””

She smiled.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Explain.””

She leaned forward.

“Whitmore Dynamics was never built because of you.””

The room went quiet.

I felt the old anger rise.

But I stayed calm.

“Then why are you here?””

Her smile faded.

“Because Daniel built this company for our daughter.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Vanessa.””

“No.””

She stood.

“I’m done protecting him.””

She pointed toward the screen.

“Everyone should know the truth.””

The presentation changed.

A photograph appeared.

Daniel.

Vanessa.

A baby.

Again.

But this time, there was another image.

A birth certificate.

The room erupted with whispers.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked defeated.

Vanessa spoke softly.

“Ten years ago, Daniel promised me everything.””

She looked at me.

“And then he chose you.””

I said nothing.

Because for the first time, I realized something.

Vanessa wasn’t just trying to steal my company.

She believed I stole her life.

The problem was…

I never knew I was part of their story.

Daniel suddenly stood.

“Enough.””

Everyone turned.

His voice shook.

“Vanessa, stop.””

She looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because you’re making things worse.””

She laughed.

“Worse?””

She stepped closer.

“You destroyed our family before she even knew it existed.””

Daniel went silent.

Then Vanessa said:

“Tell her the rest.””

My heart sank.

“What rest?””

Daniel looked at me.

And I knew.

There was another secret.

Another piece missing.

Vanessa smiled.

“Tell Claire why you never introduced her to your daughter.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Daniel.

“Your daughter knows me?””

May you like

Daniel didn’t answer.

And that was enough.
