Chapter 5: The Money Behind the Dream
After Vanessa left, nobody moved.
The silence inside the house felt heavier than shouting.
I looked at Daniel.
He looked away.
That was when I knew.
There was something else.
Something I didn’t know.
For ten years, I had believed I knew every chapter of our story.
Apparently, I had only been reading the version Daniel wanted me to see.
“Tell me,” I said.
Daniel didn’t answer.
“Tell me where the money came from.””
He walked toward the kitchen.
I followed.
“Claire…”
“No.””
My voice was steady.
“Not tonight. Not after everything. Not after I watched you celebrate a new life with another woman.””
He stopped.
I placed my hands on the counter.
“Tell me the truth.””
Daniel stood there for several seconds.
Then he finally spoke.
“When we started Whitmore Dynamics, your investment wasn’t enough.””
I felt a strange ache in my chest.
Not because I didn’t know.
Because I did.
I knew there were difficult moments.
I knew the company struggled.
I knew Daniel borrowed money.
But I didn’t know this.
“What did you do?””
He looked down.
“I found another investor.””
“Who?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation answered before his words did.
“Vanessa’s father.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
“Her father invested during the early stage.””
I laughed quietly.
A painful laugh.
“So while I was selling my grandmother’s necklace to help you…”
“Claire—”
“You were building a connection with her family?””
“It wasn’t like that.””
I looked at him.
“Wasn’t it?””
Daniel sat down.
“She wasn’t even involved back then.””
“But her family was.””
“Yes.””
“And you hid this from me.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
Those words made me angry.
“Stop saying that.””
Daniel looked up.
“What?””
“Stop pretending your lies were protection.””
I walked around the kitchen slowly.
“You didn’t protect me. You controlled what I knew.””
Daniel rubbed his face.
“I thought if you knew, you’d worry.””
“I was your wife.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
The room became quiet.
Because that was the truth.
He knew my name.
He knew my habits.
He knew how I liked my coffee.
But he didn’t know me anymore.
Not the woman standing in front of him.
Not the woman who had spent the last hour discovering her entire marriage was built on secrets.
My phone rang.
Eleanor.
I answered immediately.
“Claire.””
Her voice sounded serious.
“We found something.””
I looked at Daniel.
“What?””
“We reviewed the original investment records.””
“And?””
A pause.
Then:
“Your ownership percentage is actually higher than we thought.””
Daniel looked up.
I put the phone on speaker.
Eleanor continued.
“Your 83% share is correct, but there is another clause.””
“What clause?””
“The founder protection agreement.””
Daniel stood.
“What?””
Eleanor’s voice became colder.
“The agreement states that if another party attempts to remove Claire from control through deception or unauthorized transfer, all voting authority temporarily returns to her.””
Daniel went pale.
Vanessa’s plan had not just failed.
It had activated something.
I looked at him.
“Did you know about this?””
“No.””
For once, I believed him.
Because Daniel looked genuinely shocked.
Eleanor continued.
“There’s more.””
“What?””
“The board meeting Vanessa scheduled tomorrow morning.””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“What about it?””
“She wasn’t planning to announce your removal.””
A chill moved through me.
“Then what was she planning?””
Eleanor was silent for a moment.
Then she answered.
“She was planning to announce that Daniel had become the sole owner of Whitmore Dynamics.””
Daniel stepped back.
“That’s impossible.””
“No,” Eleanor said.
“It’s attempted fraud.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel whispered:
“She was going to take everything.””
I looked at him.
“No.””
I corrected him.
“She was going to take everything from me.””
My phone buzzed again.
A new email appeared.
Sender: Vanessa Cole.
Subject: You should have stayed quiet.
I opened it.
Inside was one sentence.
“Claire, if you want the truth about Daniel, come alone tomorrow.””
At the bottom was an attachment.
A photograph.
I opened it.
And my entire body went cold.
Because the picture showed Daniel.
Ten years earlier.
