Chapter 6: The Picture That Changed Everything
I stared at the photograph until the words on the screen blurred.
Daniel.
Vanessa.
A baby.
Ten years ago.
The same year we got married.
The same year Daniel told me he was finally ready to build a future with me.
My fingers went numb.
“No.””
The word escaped before I could stop it.
Daniel looked at me.
“What is it?””
I didn’t answer.
I couldn’t.
Because some part of me was still trying to protect the memory of who he used to be.
The man in our wedding photos.
The man who cried when he saw me walk down the aisle.
The man who promised me forever.
But the photograph sitting in my hand belonged to a different man.
A man I didn’t know.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Claire?””
I turned the phone toward him.
The second he saw the image, his entire face changed.
Not confusion.
Not surprise.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Where did you get that?””
I stepped back.
“You know what this is?””
He didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
His silence was louder than any confession.
I felt something inside me collapse.
“Who is the baby?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Claire…”
“Who is the baby?””
He sat down slowly.
For the first time that night, he looked exhausted.
Not like a victim.
Like someone who had been running from the truth for years.
“I was going to tell you.””
I almost laughed.
“Everyone always says that after they get caught.””
“It’s not what you think.””
“Then explain.””
Daniel looked at the photograph.
“That was before we were married.””
“Before?””
“Yes.””
“And Vanessa?””
He didn’t answer.
My voice became sharper.
“And the baby?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Vanessa had a daughter.””
My heart pounded.
“What does that have to do with you?””
He looked at me.
And the next words changed everything.
“She was my daughter too.””
The room went silent.
I heard the clock on the wall.
Tick.
Tick.
Tick.
For several seconds, I couldn’t process what he said.
“You’re saying…”
Daniel nodded.
“I found out Vanessa was pregnant after we broke up.””
I stared at him.
“We?””
He looked away.
“Yes.””
I felt sick.
Because suddenly every strange moment made sense.
Every secret meeting.
Every late night.
Every time Vanessa appeared at company events.
“You weren’t just working with her.””
“No.””
“You were hiding a child.””
Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.
“I didn’t know how to tell you.””
“You had ten years.””
“I was scared.””
I looked at him.
“You were scared?””
My voice broke.
“You let me build a marriage with a lie because you were scared?””
Daniel lowered his head.
“I loved you.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
He looked up.
“I did.””
“You loved the version of me who didn’t know the truth.””
He had no answer.
My phone rang.
Eleanor again.
I answered without taking my eyes off Daniel.
“Claire.””
Her voice was urgent.
“You need to know something.””
“What?””
“We traced Vanessa’s actions.””
“And?””
“She wasn’t trying to steal the company because of money.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
A pause.
Then Eleanor said:
“She believes Whitmore Dynamics was supposed to belong to her daughter.””
My heart stopped.
I looked at Daniel.
He looked terrified.
“Why?””
Eleanor continued.
“Because according to the documents we found…”
She stopped.
“According to what?””
“Daniel promised Vanessa years ago that he would leave the company to their child.””
I couldn’t breathe.
Daniel stood immediately.
“That’s not true.””
But his voice was weak.
Too weak.
I looked at the man I married.
The man who had built an empire.
The man who had destroyed our marriage.
Then my phone received one final message.
From Vanessa.
It contained a legal document.
May you like
And one sentence.
“Ask Daniel why your name was never supposed to be on the company.””
