Chapter 13: The Two Daughters Hidden by One Terrible Secret

“Your mother.””

Vanessa's words echoed in Daniel's mind long after the call ended.

He sat at my kitchen table, staring at his phone while the coffee beside him went cold.

For years, he'd believed Vanessa had abandoned him because she no longer loved him. He'd built a new life, married Claire, and convinced himself that the past had ended where Vanessa had left it.

Now he was discovering that someone had deliberately kept that past alive.

Someone who had known about Vanessa's pregnancy.

Someone who had helped conceal Lily's existence.

Someone who had submitted a statement claiming Daniel had voluntarily surrendered his parental rights.

Our mother.

“Em,” Daniel said quietly, “I need you to call Rachel.””

I was already reaching for my phone.

Within an hour, we were sitting in Rachel's office with Vanessa joining by video call from another state.

She looked older than I remembered her, with tired eyes and dark hair pulled into a loose ponytail. She kept twisting a silver ring around her finger.

Daniel stared at her through the screen.

“I need to ask you something, and I need you to be honest.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Did you ever tell Mom you were pregnant?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“About a week after I found out.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

Vanessa continued.

“She came to my apartment. She brought groceries and sat with me for hours. She said she wanted to help me figure out what to do.””

“What did she tell you about me?””

Vanessa looked down.

“She said you were devastated by the pregnancy. She told me you were afraid I'd force you to marry me and that you were considering moving away.””

Daniel stared at her.

“That's a lie.””

“I know.””

“Did she say I wanted you to give up the baby?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She said you'd told her you couldn't raise a child with me.””

Daniel pushed back his chair.

“I never said that!””

“I believe you.””

“Then why didn't you call me?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“Because your mother showed me a letter.””

Rachel leaned forward.

“What letter?””

Vanessa reached for a folder beside her.

“My father kept copies of everything. He was convinced he was protecting me. When I moved away, he stored my documents in a box. I found it after he died.””

She held up a scanned page.

At the top was Daniel's name.

Beneath it was a paragraph stating that he acknowledged the pregnancy but did not wish to assume parental responsibility.

At the bottom was a signature that looked remarkably similar to his.

Daniel stared at it.

“That's not my signature.””

Rachel examined the page.

“Do you know who prepared this document?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“My mother said your mother brought it to her.””

Daniel covered his face.

“Mom has been doing this for years.””

Rachel corrected him gently.

“We have evidence that raises serious questions about the document's authenticity. We still need to establish who created it and who knew it was false.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I have the original envelope, too. It was mailed from Dallas.””

Rachel asked her to preserve everything and send copies through the appropriate secure process.

Then she asked the question none of us wanted to ask.

“Vanessa, do you know whether the clinic transferred any of your stored genetic material to another patient?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I never authorized a transfer.””

“Did you receive any notice that your embryos had been destroyed or transferred?””

“No.””

Rachel made a note.

“Then the clinic needs to account for every record associated with your treatment.””

Daniel leaned toward the screen.

“Vanessa, do you know who adopted Grace?””

“Yes. Their names are Paul and Jennifer Whitmore. They live outside Fort Worth.””

“Have you seen her?””

“Once, when she was a baby. The agency arranged a brief meeting before the adoption was finalized. I haven't seen her since.””

Daniel swallowed.

“Do they know about me?””

“They were told the father was unknown. I didn't know what else to do. I thought you wanted nothing to do with us.””

He looked away.

“I would have raised her.””

“I know that now.””

For several moments, neither spoke.

Then Vanessa said something that changed the direction of the investigation.

“When I called the clinic last month, the director told me my old records had been accessed by someone using a staff login. He said the access occurred shortly before Claire announced her pregnancy.””

Rachel sat straighter.

“Did he identify the staff member?””

“He said the account belonged to Dr. Harris.””

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

“Samuel Harris?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He was the doctor who told my father that you had refused responsibility. He also signed the document saying I had authorized the destruction of my embryos.””

Rachel wrote quickly.

“Do you have that document?””

“Yes. I'll send it.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Why would he do that?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don't know. But there's something else. When I asked him about the embryos, he said the clinic had already corrected the records and that I should stop looking into it.””

Rachel's expression hardened.

“That is something we'll need to investigate.””

After the call ended, Daniel remained seated.

Two daughters.

Two women who had given birth without his knowledge.

Two adoption records containing statements he claimed never to have signed.

And the same doctor appearing in both cases.

Rachel closed her folder.

“Daniel, I want to be clear. We cannot assume that the two cases are connected simply because the same doctor appears in the records. But there is enough overlap to justify a formal investigation.””

Daniel nodded.

“Then investigate everything.””

That afternoon, he called our mother.

She answered almost immediately.

“Daniel, sweetheart, I've been waiting for you to call.””

He looked at the phone.

“Did you tell Vanessa I didn't want her baby?””

Silence.

“Mom?””

She began crying.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From becoming a father?””

“You were twenty-six. You had your whole life ahead of you.””

“That wasn't your decision to make!””

“I thought you would resent her. I thought you would feel trapped.””

“So you lied to her?””

“I didn't think it would go this far.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You keep saying that. How far did you think it would go? Did you think I'd never discover the truth? Did you think I'd spend my entire life wondering why I couldn't have children while you knew I might already have two?””

Mom sobbed.

“I wanted you to have a good life.””

“I wanted my children.””

The words silenced her.

Daniel's voice broke.

“I wanted the chance to know them. I wanted the chance to choose.””

He ended the call.

For the first time, he didn't look angry afterward.

He looked exhausted.

That evening, Rachel received an email from the fertility clinic.

The clinic had suspended Dr. Harris pending an internal review and had agreed to preserve the relevant records.

Attached was a document showing that Vanessa's embryo storage account had been accessed on multiple occasions without a clear clinical reason.

One access occurred on the day Claire's final embryo transfer was supposedly canceled.

Another occurred three days before Claire announced her fake pregnancy.

Rachel enlarged the document.

“Daniel, look at this.””

He leaned over her desk.

At the bottom was a note entered by Dr. Harris.

*Potential recipient: Claire Carter. Transfer authorization pending.*

Daniel stared at the screen.

“Recipient?””

Rachel nodded slowly.

“It appears someone considered transferring genetic material associated with Vanessa's treatment to Claire. We need the clinic to explain what actually happened.””

Daniel's hands began shaking.

“Could Claire have carried Vanessa's embryo?””

“We don't know yet.””

Rachel opened another attachment.

It was a scanned consent form bearing Claire's signature.

Beside it was a second signature, supposedly Daniel's.

But the date was eight months before the fake pregnancy began.

And the document authorized a procedure Daniel insisted he had never agreed to.

Rachel looked at him.

“Daniel, if this form is authentic, it could mean something very different from what we thought.””

May you like

He stared at the signature.

Then he whispered, “What if Claire wasn't pretending to be pregnant the entire time?””
