Chapter 12: The Woman Who Disappeared Before My Wedding
Daniel stared at Rachel.
“That's impossible.””
Rachel repeated the name from the clinic director's email.
“Vanessa Cole.””
For several seconds, Daniel didn't move.
Vanessa had been his fiancée before he met Claire. They'd dated for four years, bought furniture for a house they never moved into, and planned a wedding that was canceled six months before the ceremony.
She had left Dallas without explaining why.
Daniel had told me she simply changed her mind.
He'd never mentioned another man, another pregnancy, or fertility treatments.
“Why would Vanessa's patient number be connected to Claire?”” he asked.
Rachel folded her hands.
“That's what we're trying to establish. The clinic has confirmed that the number belongs to Vanessa, but it has not yet confirmed whether the document was altered before or after it entered the medical record.””
Daniel stood and walked to the window.
“I haven't spoken to Vanessa in seven years.””
“Do you know where she lives?””
“No.””
“Do you have any old contact information?””
He shook his head.
“Her parents moved after she left. I tried contacting her once, but she never replied.””
Rachel nodded.
“We'll ask the clinic to preserve the records and determine whether there is a lawful way to contact her.””
Daniel turned back.
“What if she had a baby?””
“Then we'll need to establish what happened, without making assumptions.””
He rubbed his face.
“I can't keep doing this. Every time I think I understand what's happening, another secret appears.””
Rachel's voice softened.
“You don't have to solve every mystery today. Our immediate priorities are confirming the records, protecting Lily's privacy, and establishing whether anyone falsified medical or legal documents.””
Daniel sat down.
“What if Vanessa is connected to all of this?””
“Then the evidence will tell us how.””
That evening, I found Daniel sitting on my porch, staring at the street.
He had barely eaten all day.
“Vanessa was supposed to marry me,” he said when I sat beside him.
“I remember.””
“She left six months before the wedding. I spent years believing I'd done something wrong.””
I rested my hand on his shoulder.
“You were both young.””
“She never told me why she left. One day she was choosing wedding invitations, and the next she was gone.””
He looked at me.
“What if she knew something about the fertility treatments?””
“Then we'll find out.””
He shook his head.
“I keep thinking about all the times I've been wrong about people. I thought Claire loved me. I thought Marcus was my brother in every way that mattered. I thought Mom would always tell me the truth.””
His voice cracked.
“And now I don't even know what happened seven years ago.””
I didn't try to reassure him.
Instead, I sat beside him until the sun disappeared behind the houses.
The following afternoon, Rachel received a response from the fertility clinic.
The clinic had located an archived file under Vanessa's name. Access was restricted, but the director had confirmed that Vanessa underwent a fertility consultation shortly before leaving Dallas.
She had also signed consent forms relating to the storage of genetic material.
The file contained a note stating that a subsequent appointment had been canceled at the patient's request.
No further details were available without additional authorization.
Daniel read the summary.
“Did she have embryos frozen?””
“We don't know yet,” Rachel said.
“The clinic is reviewing the records.””
“But if she did, could those embryos have been transferred to Claire?””
“Not without a documented medical and legal process. We need to determine whether any transfer occurred, whether the document was altered, and what the clinic actually did.””
Daniel stared at the file.
“Could Claire have used Vanessa's embryo?””
Rachel didn't answer immediately.
“It's a question worth investigating, but we don't have evidence establishing that.””
That night, Daniel called Vanessa's old number.
It had been disconnected.
He searched through an old email account and found a message he'd sent her seven years earlier.
I don't understand why you left. I wish you'd tell me what happened. I still love you, and I hope you're safe.
There had never been a reply.
He read the message several times.
Then he closed the laptop.
The next morning, an unknown number called him.
“Hello?””
A woman's voice answered.
“Daniel?””
He froze.
“Who's this?””
“My name is Vanessa.””
For a moment, he couldn't speak.
Then he gripped the phone.
“Where have you been?””
She exhaled shakily.
“I know you have questions.””
“Questions? Vanessa, you disappeared before our wedding. I spent years wondering what I'd done wrong.””
“I know.””
“Why didn't you call me?””
Silence.
Then she said, “Because I was pregnant.””
Daniel stood so abruptly that he knocked his chair backward.
“What?””
“I found out I was pregnant shortly before I left Dallas.””
He pressed a hand against his forehead.
“Was the baby mine?””
“Yes.””
The word seemed to drain the air from the room.
Daniel sat down slowly.
“You had my child?””
Vanessa began crying.
“I gave birth to a little girl.””
He closed his eyes.
“Where is she?””
“She was adopted.””
Daniel couldn't breathe.
Another daughter.
Another adoption.
Another child whose existence had been hidden from him.
“Why?”” he whispered.
Vanessa sobbed.
“My parents told me you didn't want anything to do with me. They said you'd moved on, that you were already with someone else.””
“I wasn't with Claire yet!””
“I know that now.””
“Who told you that?””
“My father.””
Daniel stared at the wall.
“Why would he lie?””
Vanessa's voice trembled.
“Because he believed you would ruin my life.””
Daniel almost laughed at the absurdity of it.
“By becoming a father?””
“He thought you were too ambitious, too focused on your career. He said you'd resent me for getting pregnant.””
Daniel pressed his fingers against his eyes.
“What's her name?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Grace.””
He whispered the name.
“Grace.””
“She was adopted by a couple in Texas. They knew I was young and unmarried. They agreed to give her a stable home.””
“Did you ever tell them about me?””
“No. I believed you wanted nothing to do with us.””
Daniel sat in silence.
Then he asked the question he was afraid to hear answered.
“Is Grace connected to Claire?””
Vanessa stopped crying.
“Why are you asking me that?””
“Because Claire's fertility records contain your patient number.””
The line went quiet.
Finally, Vanessa whispered, “Oh, God.””
Daniel gripped the phone.
“What do you know?””
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
“When I left Dallas, I didn't just leave because I was pregnant. I left because someone from the fertility clinic contacted me about my frozen embryos.””
Daniel stared at the phone.
“What did they tell you?””
“They said there had been a serious recordkeeping error. They wanted me to sign documents authorizing the clinic to correct the file.””
“Did you sign?””
“No. I refused. I asked for an independent review, and then I received a letter telling me the matter had been resolved.””
Daniel's heart began pounding.
“Resolved how?””
“I don't know.””
“Vanessa, I need you to tell me everything.””
She hesitated.
Then she said, “The clinic called me again last month.””
“Why?””
“They told me someone had accessed my old records.””
Daniel's mouth went dry.
“Who?””
“I don't know. But they said the person was asking about a child born on April seventeenth.””
The same date as Lily's birth.
Daniel stood.
“Vanessa, do you have any documents?””
“Yes.””
“Can you send them to Rachel Bennett, my attorney?””
“I can.””
He swallowed.
“There's something else I need to ask you.””
“What?””
“Did you ever meet a doctor named Samuel Harris?””
Vanessa stopped breathing.
When she finally spoke, her voice was barely audible.
“Yes.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“What did he do?””
“He was the doctor who handled my fertility consultation.””
“Did he know about your pregnancy?””
“Yes.””
“Did he know about Grace's adoption?””
Another pause.
Then Vanessa whispered, “He was the person who told my father that you had agreed to give up your parental rights.””
Daniel felt the blood drain from his face.
“I never agreed to that.””
“I know that now.””
“Vanessa, who gave him that information?””
She began crying again.
“My father said it came from someone close to you. Someone who promised that if I left Dallas, the truth would never come out.””
Daniel gripped the edge of the table.
“Who?””
Vanessa took a breath.
Then she gave him a name.
“Your mother.””
Daniel stared at the wall, unable to move.
Before he could answer, Vanessa added one final sentence.
“And Daniel, there's something I haven't told you about Grace.””
May you like
Her voice broke.
“The adoption agency contacted me yesterday. They believe the DNA records connected to her may have been altered too.””
