Chapter 14: The Family Meeting Nobody Expected

The next morning, Robert asked me to attend a meeting at his office.

He had arranged for the financial investigators to present their preliminary findings.

I arrived at nine.

Todd was already there.

He sat in the corner wearing yesterday's clothes, his eyes red and his hands clasped tightly together.

Megan arrived ten minutes later.

She wore a cream-colored designer suit and carried an expensive handbag.

She looked at me but didn't greet me.

Richard arrived last.

He walked into the conference room as though he owned it.

"Well," he said, pulling out a chair, "I hope we're finally ready to behave like adults.""

Robert didn't smile.

"Mr. Calloway, please sit down.""

Richard placed his briefcase on the table.

"I assume we're here to resolve the family disagreement.""

I looked at him.

"There's no disagreement, Richard. There are financial records.""

He gave a small laugh.

"Judith, you're allowing Robert to frighten you with legal terminology.""

Robert opened a folder.

"Let's begin with the $4.7 million in unauthorized transfers.""

Richard leaned back.

"Those were partnership expenses.""

"Then why were they transferred to personal accounts?""

"They were temporary arrangements.""

"Why were the supporting documents altered?""

Richard's expression hardened.

"I don't know what you're referring to.""

Robert placed the forged agreement on the table.

"This document claims George transferred ownership of the partnership to you. The listed witness has denied signing it.""

Richard glanced at the page.

"That's unfortunate.""

Megan shifted in her chair.

Todd stared at the floor.

Robert continued.

"We also have evidence of a $6.8 million loan application submitted using Judith's personal information and company assets.""

Richard folded his arms.

"That application was never approved.""

"Because we stopped it.""

"Then no harm was done.""

I leaned forward.

"No harm?""

Richard looked at me.

I spoke slowly.

"You tried to take my identity. You tried to take my company. You used my husband's signature after he died. And you allowed me to believe I was a burden while you planned to steal my money.""

He shrugged.

"You had more money than you needed.""

I stared at him.

"That money wasn't yours.""

He smiled.

"Neither was George's entire fortune. He made mistakes. I helped him build those investments.""

Robert placed another document on the table.

"This is the recovered payment record showing $850,000 transferred to a company controlled by Megan.""

Megan suddenly stood.

"I never received that money!""

Robert turned the page.

"The account is registered in your name.""

"I didn't know anything about it!""

Todd looked at her.

"Megan, you told me the money came from your father.""

She turned toward him.

"Don't you dare.""

I watched them.

For the first time, they were no longer standing together against me.

They were beginning to turn on one another.

Robert placed a printed email in front of Megan.

"Would you like to explain this?""

She read it.

Her face drained of color.

The email was from Richard.

Once the ownership documents are processed, the $850,000 will be transferred to your account. Keep Judith away from the company records until everything is finalized.

Megan pushed the paper away.

"Richard told me it was a business arrangement.""

Richard slammed his hand on the table.

"Be quiet!""

An investigator sitting near the window spoke calmly.

"Mr. Calloway, please do not interrupt.""

Richard glared at him.

"This is ridiculous.""

Robert opened the final folder.

"There's another matter. The investigators have obtained records showing that Todd received approximately $1.9 million from the partnership.""

Todd looked up.

"I didn't know it was stolen.""

Richard laughed.

"You knew exactly where it came from.""

Todd turned toward him.

"You told me Dad had approved it!""

"Your father approved nothing!""

The room fell silent.

I looked at Richard.

"Thank you for finally telling the truth.""

His face changed.

He realized what he'd admitted.

Robert made a note.

The investigator asked Richard to remain seated while they reviewed the records.

But Richard suddenly grabbed his briefcase.

"I'm leaving.""

The investigator stood.

"Mr. Calloway, please wait.""

Richard ignored him.

Then he turned toward me.

"You think you've won, Judith? You have no idea what George did before he died.""

I stood.

"Then tell me.""

Richard's voice became cruel.

"Your husband knew Todd was stealing. He knew about the forged documents. And he still kept protecting him.""

I felt my eyes fill.

"George protected his son because he loved him.""

Richard shook his head.

"No. George protected you because he knew Todd would eventually come after everything.""

I stared at him.

For a moment, I saw the man who had stood beside George at our wedding anniversary, laughing over old family stories.

Then I saw the man who had spent years stealing from us.

"Get out of my life," I said.

The investigator stepped between us.

Richard was escorted into another room for further questioning.

Megan remained seated, staring at the email.

Todd approached me.

"Mom.""

I turned.

"I know I don't deserve anything from you, but I want to make things right.""

I looked at my son.

"Can you return the money?""

He nodded.

"I'll sell the property.""

"All of it?""

"Yes.""

"Will you cooperate with the investigation?""

He swallowed.

"Yes.""

"Even if it means admitting what you did?""

He nodded.

I took a breath.

"Then that's where you start.""

He began crying.

Megan suddenly spoke.

"What about us?""

I turned toward her.

"What about you?""

She looked at me desperately.

"We have children. We have a mortgage. You can't just leave us with nothing.""

I looked at the woman who had once complained that my presence was costing her money.

"Megan, I didn't leave you with nothing. I simply stopped giving you things that never belonged to you.""

She lowered her head.

Then Robert received a message.

He read it and looked at me.

"The investigators have located the original trust documents.""

I felt my heart beating faster.

"Where?""

"With the independent trustee.""

"Can we confirm the balance?""

Robert smiled faintly.

"Yes. The trust is intact.""

I exhaled.

"And the eleven million?""

"Protected. With the investment returns, the current value is approximately $13.6 million.""

I closed my eyes.

George had protected me after all.

But Robert wasn't finished.

"There's one more thing. The trustee has found a separate instruction attached to the original trust.""

"What instruction?""

He placed the document in front of me.

It was dated three weeks before George died.

The heading read:

Final Family Distribution.

I scanned the page.

There was a provision for Todd.

A provision for the grandchildren.

And one final instruction addressed directly to me.

I read it twice.

Then I looked up.

"Robert, are you telling me George wanted me to make the final decision?""

He nodded.

"Yes. He left the choice entirely to you.""

I stared at the document.

May you like

For the first time, I realized the ending of this story wasn't going to be decided by the lottery, the missing millions, or Richard.

It would be decided by what I chose to do with the family George had tried so hard to protect.
