Chapter 8: The Accusation Against My Father

By noon, the email had been forwarded to the school's independent scholarship committee.

By one o'clock, Dr. Anderson had called my father three times.

And by two, a message had appeared in the school's parent community group accusing Michael Carter of stealing money from his dead wife.

I saw it on my phone while sitting at our kitchen table.

The post included a photograph of Dad standing beside the stage.

Someone had zoomed in on his old jacket.

The caption read:

Before everyone celebrates this so-called generous mechanic, perhaps someone should investigate where his money actually came from.

I felt sick.

Dad placed a glass of water beside me.

"Don't read that.""

"They're calling you a thief.""

"People can say whatever they want.""

"That's not fair!""

He sat opposite me.

"Emily, listen. When someone cannot defeat the truth, they sometimes attack the person telling it.""

I turned my phone toward him.

"They're saying you stole from Mom.""

Dad looked at the screen.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he picked up his phone and called Dr. Anderson.

"Hello, Doctor. This is Michael Carter.""

He listened.

"Yes, I've seen the message.""

Another pause.

"No, I did not authorize anyone to make those statements.""

His expression tightened.

"I want the school to preserve every document and communication connected to the scholarship investigation.""

He listened again.

"Thank you. I'll cooperate fully.""

When he hung up, I asked, "What did he say?""

"The committee has received an anonymous package containing financial statements and a copy of an old business agreement.""

"What agreement?""

Dad rubbed his jaw.

"Something involving my brother.""

I remembered the recording.

"Thomas?""

Dad nodded.

"He claims I transferred money from our father's business account before Thomas disappeared.""

"Did you?""

"No. Thomas did.""

He walked toward the kitchen cabinet and retrieved an old metal box.

Inside were photographs, receipts, and a few faded legal documents.

He placed a photograph on the table.

Two young men stood outside a repair shop.

One was Dad.

The other had dark hair and a confident smile.

Thomas.

"That's him," Dad whispered.

I studied the photograph.

He looked nothing like my father.

Then I noticed something written on the back.

Michael and Thomas, opening day. Carter Auto Repair. June 1998.

Dad opened a folded document.

It was an old partnership agreement.

"Your grandfather divided the business equally between us. Thomas managed the accounts. I handled the repairs.""

He pointed to a signature.

"That's Thomas's.""

Then he showed me another document.

A bank statement.

Several withdrawals had been made without authorization.

Dad explained that he'd discovered the missing money after Thomas left.

"I reported it to the bank. I also filed a police report.""

"Then why didn't anyone find him?""

"Because he disappeared before the investigation could move forward.""

I looked at the dates.

The final withdrawal was dated just three days before the supposed boating accident.

"Did you ever get the money back?""

Dad shook his head.

"No.""

I felt anger rising inside me.

"So he's been accusing you of something he actually did?""

"That's what it looks like.""

My phone vibrated.

A new message had appeared from an unknown number.

You should stop asking questions about Thomas. Your father knows what happened to Sarah.

I stared at the words.

Dad noticed my expression.

"What's wrong?""

I handed him the phone.

He read the message twice.

Then he immediately called Daniel.

Within twenty minutes, the attorney arrived at our house.

He examined the message and photographed the screen.

"Don't respond," he advised.

"We'll preserve it and provide it to the investigators.""

Dad paced across the living room.

"Someone is threatening my daughter now?""

Daniel remained calm.

"We'll take it seriously. But we need to understand something. The anonymous accusation against you may be part of a larger strategy.""

"What strategy?""

"Discrediting you before the financial investigation reaches the original records.""

I looked at him.

"Why would they need to discredit Dad?""

"Because if the committee believes your father misappropriated money, they'll be less likely to trust his claims about the scholarship fund.""

Dad stopped pacing.

"And Patricia gets to keep the money.""

"Potentially.""

Daniel opened his briefcase.

"I also spoke with a forensic accountant this afternoon. She reviewed the Whitmore Educational Consulting transactions.""

He placed several pages on the coffee table.

"The $42,000 Patricia admitted spending was only part of the problem.""

Dad leaned forward.

"How much is missing?""

Daniel took a breath.

"Approximately $87,000 across several accounts connected to the memorial scholarship and educational trust.""

My stomach dropped.

"Eighty-seven thousand?""

"Yes.""

Dad closed his eyes.

"Those funds were supposed to help children.""

Daniel nodded.

"There's something else. We traced a series of transfers to an account opened under Thomas Reed's name.""

I looked at the photograph on the table.

My uncle had been taking money while Dad worked sixteen-hour shifts.

"Can the money be recovered?""

"Some of it may be. But first, we need to establish who authorized the transactions.""

Dad picked up the original partnership agreement.

Then he noticed something.

A small handwritten note had been tucked between the pages.

He unfolded it.

His expression changed immediately.

"Emily, come here.""

I moved beside him.

The note contained four lines in my mother's handwriting.

Michael, if Thomas ever returns, ask him about the blue ledger.

Dad looked at Daniel.

"What blue ledger?""

Daniel slowly closed his briefcase.

"I believe your wife may have been referring to a private financial record.""

Dad shook his head.

"Where would it be?""

Daniel looked toward the photograph.

"Perhaps somewhere connected to your old business.""

Before Dad could answer, his phone rang.

The caller ID showed an unfamiliar number.

He answered.

"Hello?""

A man's voice came through.

"Hello, little brother.""

Dad went completely still.

Thomas continued.

"It's been a long time.""

Dad gripped the phone.

"Where are you?""

A short laugh.

"That's not important. What matters is that you stop digging through things that don't belong to you.""

Dad's voice hardened.

"You used my wife's name. You stole money from children. And now you're threatening my daughter.""

Thomas sighed.

"Michael, you always were too emotional.""

Then his voice dropped.

"Meet me tomorrow at the old repair shop. Come alone.""

Dad looked at me.

Thomas delivered his final warning.

"Because if you bring the police, I'll tell everyone what really happened the night Sarah died.""

May you like

The call ended.

And for the first time since the graduation ceremony, I saw my father genuinely afraid.
