Chapter 12: The Husband Who Knew Too Much

Richard Whitmore arrived at Daniel Harrison's office at eleven the following morning.

He looked exhausted.

His tie was loose, his eyes were red, and he carried a thick leather briefcase.

When he saw my father, he stopped.

"Michael.""

Dad didn't offer his hand.

"Richard.""

Richard looked at me.

"Emily, I owe you an explanation.""

I crossed my arms.

"You owe my father one first.""

He nodded.

"You're right.""

Daniel closed the conference room door.

Laura placed the hospital authorization form on the table.

"Mr. Whitmore, do you recognize this document?""

Richard examined it.

His face went pale.

"That's my signature.""

Dad's voice hardened.

"You signed a hospital authorization for a woman you barely knew?""

Richard shook his head.

"No. I never signed this.""

Laura pointed to the bottom.

"Then why is your name here?""

Richard opened his briefcase.

"Because someone has been forging my signature for years.""

He removed several financial documents and spread them across the table.

"I hired an independent accountant after the graduation ceremony. I wanted to know whether Patricia had used my company to move the scholarship money.""

Daniel examined the papers.

"What did you find?""

Richard swallowed.

"She opened several accounts without my knowledge. Some used the Whitmore Educational Consulting name. Others used my personal business information.""

Dad stared at him.

"How long?""

"At least seven years.""

"Seven years?""

Richard nodded.

"I knew Patricia was secretive about her business. But I never imagined she was involved in something like this.""

Laura examined the transaction list.

"These transfers correspond with the payments made to Thomas Reed.""

Richard nodded.

"I found the same thing.""

Dad leaned forward.

"Why did you wait until now?""

Richard looked ashamed.

"Because I was protecting my family.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Your family? My father has spent his life protecting his daughter. You watched your wife humiliate him in front of an entire school.""

Richard lowered his head.

"I know.""

"You didn't say anything until the money became a problem for you.""

He accepted the accusation without arguing.

"You're right.""

He opened another folder.

"There's something else you need to see.""

Inside were copies of emails between Patricia and an unknown recipient.

One was dated three weeks before graduation.

The subject line read:

*FINAL TRANSFER — CARTER TRUST.*

Richard pointed to the sender.

"I found this in an archived company account.""

Daniel read the first message.

The original will must be located before Emily becomes aware of the trust. Once the funds are transferred, we can close the educational accounts and settle the remaining balance privately.

Dad's hands tightened.

"Who wrote it?""

Richard turned the page.

The sender's name was Patricia Whitmore.

But the recipient's name was unfamiliar.

*Evelyn Shaw.*

Laura immediately took a photograph.

"Who is Evelyn Shaw?""

Richard shook his head.

"I don't know. But the email address is connected to a law office.""

Daniel examined the domain.

Then he looked up.

"That's strange.""

"What?"" Dad asked.

"Because Evelyn Shaw is listed as the attorney who prepared the original transfer request submitted to the school.""

Laura pulled out her phone.

"I'll verify the registration.""

While she worked, Richard removed another document.

"This is why I came.""

It was a bank statement showing a payment of $25,000.

The recipient was listed as:

*Sarah Carter Memorial Scholarship — Special Administration.*

Dad stared.

"I never received that.""

Richard nodded.

"I know. It was transferred from one of my company's accounts into another account controlled by Patricia.""

"Why would you pay into a scholarship fund without knowing?""

"I didn't. Patricia created the transaction using a forged authorization.""

Daniel studied the date.

"That payment was made six weeks after Sarah died.""

Dad looked at the ceiling.

For a moment, he seemed unable to speak.

Then he asked Richard:

"Did your wife know Sarah personally?""

Richard nodded.

"They were involved in the same charitable foundation.""

"Did you know about their disagreement?""

"Not until recently.""

He hesitated.

"Actually, I found something else in Patricia's office.""

He opened a small envelope and placed a photograph on the table.

It showed Patricia, Thomas, and another man standing outside an old building.

The man in the middle was wearing a hospital coat.

I recognized him immediately.

Dr. Ellis.

Dad stared at the picture.

"Why were they together?""

Richard looked at Laura.

"Because I think Patricia had been planning this long before Sarah died.""

Laura examined the photograph.

"Do you know when it was taken?""

"According to the back, twelve years ago.""

Daniel turned it over.

A handwritten date was visible.

The same week Sarah was hospitalized.

Dad pushed his chair backward.

"So the three of them were together while my wife was dying?""

Richard nodded slowly.

"I believe so.""

The room became silent.

Then Laura's phone rang.

She listened for several seconds before speaking.

"Understood. Please send the information immediately.""

She ended the call.

"What's happening?"" Daniel asked.

"The investigator contacted the law office listed in the emails. Evelyn Shaw isn't a licensed attorney in Georgia.""

Dad frowned.

"Then who is she?""

Laura looked at the photograph.

"She's Patricia Whitmore's sister.""

Richard closed his eyes.

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Her sister?""

Laura nodded.

"And she has been using a different surname professionally.""

Daniel leaned back.

"That explains the false authorization.""

But Laura wasn't finished.

"There's another development. The investigators located an account connected to Evelyn Shaw. It received three separate payments from the missing scholarship funds.""

Dad looked at Richard.

"How much?""

"Thirty-one thousand dollars.""

I stared at the photograph.

"So Patricia, Thomas, and her sister were all involved?""

Laura didn't answer.

Instead, she placed one final document on the table.

It was an email sent from Evelyn's account the previous evening.

The message contained only two sentences.

Patricia, the original records are no longer safe. Thomas has become a liability.

If Michael finds out who actually signed Sarah's final medical authorization, we're finished.

Dad slowly lifted his head.

"Who signed it?""

Laura looked directly at him.

"We're still verifying that.""

Then Richard whispered something that made everyone turn toward him.

"I know who signed it.""

Dad stared.

"Who?""

Richard's voice cracked.

"My wife didn't sign it.""

He paused.

"Neither did Thomas.""

He looked at me.

"The person who signed Sarah's final medical authorization was someone who had been standing beside your father at the hospital that night.""

Dad's face went completely white.

Richard opened his briefcase and removed an old photograph.

It showed Michael Carter standing outside the hospital, holding a small child in his arms.

Beside him stood another man.

A man I had never seen before.

Richard pointed at him.

"That's the person who made sure Sarah's final documents were changed.""

Dad stared at the photograph.

Then he whispered a name.

"James Whitmore.""

Richard nodded.

"My father.""

And suddenly, the scandal involving a wealthy woman and a stolen scholarship fund had become something much darker.

Because Richard's father had died eight years earlier.

Yet according to the hospital records, he had signed Sarah Carter's final authorization twelve years ago.

And the date on the photograph proved something even more disturbing.

He had been standing beside my father at the hospital before Sarah died.
