Chapter 14: The Original Agreement

The old garage stood behind the Bennett estate, hidden by overgrown trees and a rusted iron gate.

By the time we arrived, two security vehicles were already parked outside.

Marcus stepped out first.

He stared at the large metal doors.

"Open them.""

James signaled to the security team.

The doors groaned as they moved apart.

Inside stood a dark green vintage sedan covered in dust.

Its front bumper was badly damaged.

One headlight was missing.

And the windshield had a long crack running from the passenger side toward the center.

Marcus stopped breathing for a moment.

"That's my mother's car.""

Daniel nodded.

"Your father kept it exactly as it was after the accident.""

Noah looked at the vehicle.

"Was Grandma inside?""

Marcus knelt beside him.

"Yes, buddy. But we don't know everything that happened yet.""

A forensic specialist approached.

"We've secured the vehicle. We're documenting everything before anyone touches it.""

Marcus nodded.

"Good.""

The specialist opened the driver's door.

Inside, the leather seats were cracked and faded.

The steering wheel had been replaced at some point, but the dashboard remained original.

James pointed toward the glove compartment.

"There's something inside.""

The specialist carefully opened it.

He removed a small metal box.

Marcus recognized it immediately.

"My father used to keep his watch in that.""

The box was locked.

Noah took out the brass key.

"Try this?""

The specialist examined the lock.

After a moment, he nodded.

"That should work.""

Noah turned the key.

Click.

Inside was a folded document, a small photograph, and a silver ring.

Marcus picked up the photograph first.

It showed three people standing outside the old marina.

Robert.

Jonathan.

And Eleanor.

They looked young.

Happy.

United.

On the back, Robert had written:

Before the money, before the business, before the lies.

Marcus stared at the photograph.

"Why did he hide this?""

Daniel opened the folded document.

His eyes widened.

"Mr. Bennett, this is the original ownership agreement.""

Everyone gathered around.

The first page identified Eleanor Bennett as the founding investor.

The second described the foundation's controlling rights.

The third contained the original signatures.

But behind the signature page was a handwritten amendment.

Marcus read it aloud.

"Upon Eleanor Bennett's death, the controlling interest shall pass into a protected family trust for the benefit of her direct descendants.""

He looked at Noah.

The next paragraph identified the person responsible for managing that trust.

Robert Bennett.

But there was another name.

Jonathan Bennett.

Listed as the independent witness.

Marcus frowned.

"Why would Jonathan sign this if he wanted control?""

Daniel examined the page.

"Because he was part of the original arrangement.""

Patricia stepped closer.

"Then why did everyone say he betrayed the family?""

Marcus turned the document over.

A handwritten note appeared on the back.

It was dated the night of Eleanor's accident.

Jonathan was not responsible for the transfer. He discovered the forged agreement and tried to stop it.

Marcus read the sentence twice.

Then he looked toward the car.

"Who forged the agreement?""

The forensic specialist cleared his throat.

"We found something else.""

He pointed toward the passenger-side floor.

There was a small metal plate beneath the carpet.

The specialist carefully lifted it.

Inside was a narrow compartment containing a cassette recorder.

Marcus stared.

"My father never mentioned this.""

James examined the device.

"It's old, but the tape may still be playable.""

Daniel looked toward the garage entrance.

"That's probably what Eleanor hid.""

A technician arrived with a portable playback device.

Everyone gathered around.

The cassette crackled.

Then a woman's voice filled the garage.

Eleanor.

"Richard, I know what you've done.""

A man's voice answered.

"You're making a mistake.""

"I have copies of the transfers. I know about the false agreement.""

"You don't understand the situation.""

"I understand perfectly. You and Jonathan have been moving money out of the foundation.""

Marcus looked at the document.

Patricia covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

Richard's voice became sharper.

"Jonathan was supposed to help us. He changed his mind.""

Eleanor replied.

"Because he discovered you were planning to take everything.""

A pause.

Then Richard spoke again.

"Robert won't believe you.""

"Robert knows the truth.""

"Then you should have stayed quiet.""

There was a loud noise.

A door slammed.

Then Eleanor spoke again.

"Jonathan, are you there?""

A second man's voice answered.

"Yes, Eleanor.""

"Take the agreement. Get it to Robert.""

"I can't leave you here.""

"Please. Protect the boys.""

Marcus leaned forward.

The recording continued.

A struggle followed.

Then Richard's voice.

"Give me the document!""

Another crash.

The tape ended.

Nobody moved.

Patricia was crying.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

"Jonathan wasn't working with Richard. He was trying to protect my mother.""

Daniel nodded.

"That's what the recording suggests.""

Marcus turned toward the specialist.

"Can we recover the rest?""

The technician examined the cassette.

"There are several minutes of damaged audio. We may be able to restore some of it.""

James's phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

Then his face changed.

"Mr. Bennett, the lighthouse keeper from the Key Largo property has arrived.""

Marcus looked toward the entrance.

"Bring him in.""

A few minutes later, an elderly man entered the garage.

He wore a faded fishing jacket and carried a walking stick.

His eyes settled on Marcus.

"Robert's boy.""

Marcus stepped forward.

"You're the lighthouse keeper?""

The man nodded.

"My name is Samuel.""

Marcus showed him the photograph.

"Do you know this man?""

Samuel examined it.

Then he smiled sadly.

"Jonathan.""

"Where is he?""

Samuel looked toward the car.

"Not far.""

Marcus froze.

"What do you mean?""

Samuel took a folded envelope from his pocket.

"Your uncle asked me to give you this if you ever found the original agreement.""

Marcus opened it.

Inside was a recent photograph.

It showed an older man standing beside a small fishing boat.

On the back was a handwritten message.

I didn't abandon the family. I was waiting for the family to stop believing the lie.

Below it was an address.

Marcus looked at Samuel.

"Is he alive?""

Samuel nodded.

"Very much alive.""

Then he added:

"But you need to understand something before you meet him.""

"What?""

Samuel's voice dropped.

"Jonathan has been protecting Noah for years.""

Noah looked up.

"Me?""

Samuel nodded.

"Your grandfather asked him to.""

Marcus stared.

"Why would my father ask his brother to protect my son?""

Samuel looked directly at Noah.

"Because the people who wanted the foundation didn't just want the money.""

He paused.

"They wanted the only person who could inherit it.""

At that moment, the technician restarted the damaged section of Eleanor's recording.

A faint voice emerged.

This time, it was Robert.

"Jonathan, take Noah's photograph. If anything happens to me, make sure the boy never knows what Charles did.""

Then another voice answered.

It was Jonathan.

"Robert, you don't understand. Charles isn't the one giving the orders.""

Marcus leaned toward the speaker.

"Who is?""

The tape crackled.

May you like

Then Jonathan's voice delivered the words that changed everything.

*"The person controlling Charles is already inside your family.""*
