Chapter 11: The Lighthouse Beneath the Water
The old Bennett lighthouse stood on a small private island about twenty minutes from the marina.
It had been abandoned for nearly fifteen years.
The white paint had peeled away, the windows were clouded with salt, and the surrounding rocks were covered in thick green seaweed.
But as our boat approached, I noticed something strange.
A small red wooden boat was tied to the old service dock.
Noah immediately stood.
"That's it!""
Marcus looked at him.
"The boat from Grandpa's photograph?""
Noah nodded excitedly.
"Exactly!""
Daniel stared at the vessel.
"That wasn't here the last time I visited.""
Marcus signaled the captain to slow down.
A security officer went ashore first.
He checked the dock, the lighthouse entrance, and the surrounding grounds.
After confirming everything was clear, he waved us forward.
Noah stepped onto the island holding his grandfather's brass key.
Marcus took a moment to look at the lighthouse.
"My mother used to bring me here when I was little," he said quietly.
I slipped my hand into his.
"Do you remember much?""
"She would sit near the water and tell me stories about ships. She said every ship needed a destination, but every person needed a reason to come home.""
He looked toward the old building.
"I thought those were just stories.""
Daniel approached.
"Your father used to say the same thing.""
We entered through the main door.
The smell of dust, salt, and damp wood filled the room.
An old staircase spiraled upward toward the lantern chamber.
But Marcus wasn't interested in going upstairs.
He walked toward a wooden cabinet beneath the stairs.
"There used to be a map here," he said.
He opened the cabinet.
Inside was an old nautical chart.
A small red boat had been drawn near the southern rocks.
Noah pointed.
"That's the boat!""
Marcus examined the chart.
A small symbol appeared beneath it.
The same compass surrounded by four stars.
He took the brass key from Noah and compared the engraving.
"There's something beneath the dock.""
Daniel nodded.
"Your father mentioned an underground entrance. I never knew exactly where it was.""
We followed the narrow path outside.
The tide was coming in.
Water splashed against the rocks below.
Marcus studied the chart.
Then he looked toward the red boat.
"James, get the divers ready.""
One of the security officers contacted the boat crew.
Within minutes, two divers were preparing their equipment.
Marcus turned to Noah.
"Stay with Mom. Don't go near the water.""
Noah nodded.
A diver entered the water and disappeared beneath the dock.
Several minutes passed.
Then his voice came through the radio.
"Mr. Bennett, we've found something.""
Marcus grabbed the receiver.
"What?""
"There's a metal hatch beneath the southern platform. It has a circular locking mechanism.""
Marcus looked at the brass key.
"Can you reach it?""
"Yes, sir.""
Another minute passed.
Then the diver reported that the hatch had a second locking mechanism.
A narrow slot shaped like a ring.
Marcus stared at Daniel.
"The wedding ring.""
Daniel nodded.
"Your mother's.""
Marcus looked at me.
"My mother gave me her wedding ring before she died. My father kept it in his study.""
I remembered seeing it.
A small gold ring with a sapphire stone.
"Do you still have it?""
Marcus nodded.
"At home. In the safe.""
Noah looked disappointed.
"So we can't open it?""
Marcus smiled.
"Not today, buddy. But we're closer than we've ever been.""
We returned to the yacht and contacted the estate manager.
He confirmed that the ring was still inside the safe.
But before we could leave, James received a call.
His expression changed.
He walked several steps away before answering.
Then he returned.
"Mr. Bennett, we have a problem.""
Marcus sighed.
"What now?""
"Someone entered the estate this morning.""
My stomach tightened.
"Was anything stolen?""
James looked at his notes.
"Nothing appears to be missing.""
"Then what's the problem?""
"The safe was opened.""
Marcus went completely still.
"The ring?""
James nodded.
"It's gone.""
Noah looked at his father.
"Someone took Grandma's ring?""
Marcus clenched his jaw.
"Apparently.""
Daniel looked toward the lighthouse.
"Charles.""
Marcus shook his head.
"Maybe. But we shouldn't assume.""
Then Patricia's phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
It was an unfamiliar number.
She answered cautiously.
"Hello?""
A woman's voice came through.
"Patricia, it's me.""
Patricia's face changed.
"Who is this?""
"My name is Margaret Reed. I worked for your mother twenty-three years ago.""
Daniel stepped forward.
Margaret continued.
"I heard you're investigating Eleanor's death.""
Patricia looked at Marcus.
"How did you get this number?""
"That doesn't matter. What matters is that I know where the original agreement is.""
Marcus immediately reached for the phone.
"Margaret, this is Marcus Bennett. Where are you?""
"I'm at the old family chapel.""
"Why?""
There was a long pause.
Then Margaret answered.
"Because Eleanor left something there before she died.""
Marcus looked toward the lighthouse.
"What?""
"A second copy of the original ownership agreement.""
Patricia covered her mouth.
"Why didn't you tell anyone before?""
Margaret's voice became shaky.
"Because I was afraid.""
"Afraid of whom?""
"Richard Whitmore.""
Patricia's knees nearly buckled.
Margaret continued.
"Your father threatened me. He told me that if I ever revealed what happened that night, he would make sure my family lost everything.""
Marcus looked at Daniel.
"Is there anything else?""
Margaret whispered.
"Yes. Eleanor didn't die in the accident everyone was told about.""
The world seemed to stop.
Marcus tightened his grip on the phone.
"What are you saying?""
"I was there. I saw her leave the chapel that night.""
"And?""
Margaret began crying.
"She wasn't alone.""
"Who was with her?""
Margaret's answer came so quietly that Patricia almost missed it.
"Your father, Robert Bennett.""
Marcus went pale.
"What?""
Margaret continued.
"Robert was driving the car when it happened.""
The call suddenly disconnected.
Marcus stood motionless.
Noah looked up at him.
"Dad?""
May you like
But Marcus didn't answer.
Because the woman who had just called had revealed something that could destroy everything he believed about his parents.
