Chapter 14: The Last Lie of the Valerio Family

The paramedics arrived within minutes.

Daniel was rushed into an ambulance while police officers arrested Charles Whitmore.

But I barely noticed.

I was standing beside Olivia, holding her hand.

A bullet had grazed her shoulder when Daniel pushed her aside.

She was conscious.

She was alive.

And after five years of believing I had lost her forever, that was enough to keep me standing.

“Dominic,” she whispered.

I brushed the hair away from her forehead.

“Don't talk. You're going to be okay.””

She squeezed my hand.

“Daniel saved me.””

I nodded.

“He did.””

For the first time, I felt something other than hatred toward him.

He had spent years helping destroy my identity.

But when Charles raised the gun, Daniel had chosen to save me.

My mother approached.

“Dominic, the police want to speak with you.””

“Tell them I'll be there.””

She hesitated.

“There's something you need to know.””

I looked at her.

“Not another secret.””

She lowered her head.

“I'm afraid it is.””

She opened her handbag and removed a small leather diary.

It was my grandfather's.

“I found this inside Charles's study.””

I took it.

The final pages contained handwritten entries dated six months before Arthur's death.

One entry caught my attention.

Daniel has been successfully introduced into the household. Charles believes the boy is his biological son. Eleanor has agreed to remain silent.

I turned the page.

The original child was removed from the hospital records. Dominic will inherit the estate if he remains alive and legally recognized. If anything happens to him, Daniel will assume his identity.

I looked at my mother.

“Who is Daniel?””

She swallowed.

“I don't know.””

I continued reading.

Another entry appeared.

The boy was born to a woman named Catherine Moore. She died during childbirth. Charles was paid to raise him as his own.

I looked up.

“Charles wasn't Daniel's father either?””

My mother shook her head.

“Apparently not.””

I turned to the final page.

There was a name beneath Arthur's signature.

*Catherine Moore.*

I recognized it.

She had worked as a nurse at the Grand Meridian before Daniel was born.

I remembered seeing her photograph in the hotel archives.

She had been young, with dark hair and a small birthmark beneath her left eye.

The same birthmark Sarah had.

I looked toward my sister.

“Sarah.””

She approached.

I showed her the diary.

She read the entry.

Then she looked at our mother.

“Catherine Moore was my biological mother?””

Eleanor nodded slowly.

“I believe so.””

Sarah sat down.

For twenty-one years, she had believed Eleanor was her biological mother and Michael was her father.

Now she was learning that even her birth records had been manipulated.

Michael approached us.

He had been standing silently near the ambulance.

“I need to tell you something.””

Sarah looked at him.

“What?””

He swallowed.

“Catherine was my younger sister.””

The silence was immediate.

Sarah stared at him.

Michael continued.

“She became pregnant while working at the hotel. Arthur arranged for the child to be raised privately. He told me the baby had died.””

Sarah covered her mouth.

“Then why did you visit me every Sunday?””

“Because I knew you were my niece. I wanted to protect you.””

“You let me call you Mr. Harris.””

“I was afraid.””

Sarah shook her head.

“Everyone in this family was afraid. And I was the one who paid for it.””

Michael lowered his head.

“I know.””

I looked at the diary again.

The pieces were finally connecting.

Arthur had arranged the identities.

Charles had been paid to raise Daniel.

Michael had been ordered to monitor Sarah.

Adrian had controlled the medical records.

And Eleanor had been forced into silence.

But one question remained.

Why had Arthur gone to such lengths to create a replacement heir?

I opened the final section of the diary.

A folded document fell onto the floor.

It was a handwritten letter addressed to me.

Dominic,

You were always the son I wanted. But you were never the son I needed.

I felt my jaw tighten.

Your father wanted to dismantle the empire and distribute the wealth among employees. I could not allow generations of work to disappear.

I created Daniel as insurance. I believed he would be easier to control.

I was wrong.

Charles wanted the money. Adrian wanted power. Eleanor wanted to protect her children. Michael wanted to protect his sister's child.

And you wanted the truth.

The final paragraph was underlined.

If you're reading this, the original trust is still intact. But the final beneficiary is not you.

I looked up.

“What?””

Bennett took the letter from my hand.

He examined the final page.

Then he turned it over.

There was another name.

*Isabella Eleanor Valerio.*

Sarah stepped closer.

“Why is my name there?””

Bennett read the attached clause.

“Your grandfather changed the inheritance agreement before his death. He named Isabella as the sole beneficiary if Dominic returned and refused to accept the original bloodline arrangement.””

I stared.

“Why would he do that?””

My mother whispered, “Because he knew you would refuse to become like him.””

Bennett continued reading.

“The clause also states that the beneficiary must personally accept the estate before it can become active.””

Sarah shook her head.

“I don't want his money.””

I looked at her.

“It's not just money.””

I pointed toward the hospital.

“It's the hotel, the employees, the records, everything they stole from our family.””

She looked at the diary.

Then at me.

“Do you want it?””

I thought about my father.

About the people who had lost their jobs.

About Michael's daughter.

About the countless employees who had spent years working for a family that had abandoned them.

“No,” I said.

“I want us to decide what happens to it.””

Bennett nodded.

“Then the trust needs both of your signatures.””

A police officer approached.

“Mr. Valerio, Charles Whitmore has been taken into custody. However, we found something in his car.””

He handed me a sealed evidence bag.

Inside was a small photograph.

It showed Arthur Valerio sitting at his desk.

Beside him was a man I recognized immediately.

Adrian Keller.

But there was another person in the photograph.

A woman.

Standing behind them.

Holding a newborn baby.

On the back was a handwritten note.

The original heir. Never let him know.

I turned the photograph over again.

The baby had a tiny birthmark beneath his left eye.

The same birthmark as Sarah.

I looked at my sister.

She was staring at the photograph.

Then she whispered:

“Dominic, that's not me.””

My mother began trembling.

Because she recognized the woman holding the baby.

It was Catherine Moore.

And the child in her arms wasn't Sarah.

It was Daniel.

Which meant the entire family had been wrong about one final thing.

Daniel wasn't Arthur's replacement.

May you like

He was the child Arthur had originally intended to inherit everything.

And Sarah was the child who had been given his identity.
