Chapter 13: The Bloodline That Changed Everything
“Your real father is Charles Whitmore.””
Daniel's words hung in the cold night air.
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
Behind him, Olivia covered her mouth.
My mother looked as though someone had struck her.
Charles Whitmore stepped out from behind one of the marble columns.
He was holding a glass of whiskey.
And he was smiling.
“Surprise, Dominic.””
I stared at him.
“That's impossible.””
Charles took a slow sip.
“Your mother and I were together before she married Arthur. She was already pregnant when your grandfather arranged their marriage.””
I turned toward Eleanor.
“Tell me he's lying.””
She lowered her eyes.
“Dominic, I was twenty-three. Arthur knew I was pregnant, but he believed you were his son.””
“Did he know the truth?””
She shook her head.
“No. I told him you were his.””
Charles laughed.
“Your mother wanted the Valerio name. I wanted the money. It was a convenient arrangement.””
I felt sick.
“So you knew?””
“Of course.””
“And you spent five years destroying the family that raised me?””
Charles shrugged.
“Arthur built an empire on arrogance. I simply wanted what should have been mine.””
Daniel stepped down from the stairs.
“Now you understand why I deserved the inheritance.””
I looked at him.
“You were raised by Arthur.””
“And you were raised by a lie.””
He held out his hand.
“Give me the flash drive.””
I didn't move.
“Why did you marry Olivia?””
Daniel smiled.
“Because she had access to the original trust documents.””
Olivia stepped forward.
“That's not true.””
Daniel turned sharply.
“Be quiet.””
She ignored him.
“I married Daniel because he threatened Dominic's life. He showed me photographs of Dominic in the hospital and told me he would have him killed if I refused.””
I looked at her.
“Why didn't you contact me?””
“Because I believed you were being watched. Every time I tried to send a message, someone intercepted it.””
Daniel grabbed her arm.
“Enough.””
I took a step forward.
“Let her go.””
He tightened his grip.
“You don't give orders here.””
Charles placed his whiskey glass on the railing.
“Daniel, stop wasting time. We need the documents signed before sunrise.””
I looked at him.
“What documents?””
Daniel produced a folder.
“The final transfer agreement. Once you acknowledge that Charles is your biological father and surrender your claim, the estate passes to me.””
I laughed.
“You think a confession changes a legal trust?””
Charles's expression hardened.
“Your grandfather wrote the trust himself. He included a bloodline clause.””
Bennett had warned me about the inheritance agreement.
But he had never mentioned a bloodline clause.
Charles continued.
“If Arthur's biological descendants refuse to cooperate, the estate transfers to the person named in the secondary beneficiary agreement.””
“Daniel.””
“Exactly.””
My mother stepped forward.
“Arthur never wanted this.””
Charles turned toward her.
“Arthur wanted control. Nothing else.””
“You killed him!””
Charles's smile disappeared.
“Careful, Eleanor.””
“You told Adrian to increase the medication. You told him Arthur had to die before the transfer was completed.””
Daniel looked at Charles.
“You said Adrian handled that.””
Charles turned toward him.
“Adrian was supposed to follow instructions.””
I watched them.
They were beginning to argue.
And I finally understood something.
Daniel believed Charles was his ally.
Charles believed Daniel was disposable.
Neither man trusted the other.
I slowly removed the original birth certificate from my coat.
Daniel's eyes followed it.
“Give it to me.””
I held it up.
“You want the truth about my father?””
Charles laughed.
“Everyone here already knows.””
“Then you won't mind if we verify it.””
I looked toward the driveway.
Two vehicles had stopped beyond the gates.
Bennett stepped out of the first one.
Behind him were three police officers and a woman carrying a medical evidence case.
Dr. Helen Brooks, an independent forensic specialist.
Charles's smile disappeared.
“What is this?””
I held up my phone.
“Everything that happened tonight has been recorded.””
Daniel looked around.
“You brought the police?””
“I brought witnesses.””
Charles moved toward the front door.
One officer blocked his path.
“Mr. Whitmore, we need you to remain here.””
Charles raised his voice.
“Do you know who I am?””
The officer calmly replied.
“Yes. That's why we're here.””
Dr. Brooks approached with a sealed envelope.
“Mr. Valerio, we received the original hospital records from the family archives.””
She opened the envelope.
“There's a serious discrepancy in the birth certificates.””
She placed two documents on the table.
One showed my original birth registration.
The other was the amended record Charles had presented.
Dr. Brooks pointed to the second document.
“This amendment was filed twelve days after the original registration. It contains a forged hospital seal.””
Charles stepped backward.
“That document is legitimate.””
Dr. Brooks shook her head.
“The original laboratory records show that Arthur Valerio was your biological father, Mr. Dominic.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
She continued.
“The original paternity test was conducted when you were an infant. The results were positive. Someone altered the report decades later.””
Charles turned toward Eleanor.
“You told me the test was destroyed!””
My mother closed her eyes.
And suddenly, I understood.
Charles had built his entire life around a lie.
He hadn't been my father.
Arthur had.
Daniel looked at Charles.
“You said he was your son!””
Charles grabbed his arm.
“Shut up!””
Daniel pushed him away.
“You used me!””
I looked at Daniel.
“Now you know how it feels.””
Olivia moved toward me.
But before she could reach me, Charles pulled a small pistol from inside his jacket.
“Everybody back!””
The officers drew their weapons.
My mother screamed.
Charles pointed the gun at me.
“You should have stayed dead.””
A shot exploded.
Olivia fell.
And Daniel shouted my name.
For one terrifying moment, I thought I had lost her.
Then I saw Charles standing over her, the weapon still smoking.
But it wasn't Olivia who had been hit.
It was Daniel.
My brother had stepped between us.
He collapsed onto the marble floor, clutching his chest.
Charles stared at him in disbelief.
“You idiot.””
Daniel looked up at me.
Blood spread across his shirt.
“Dominic...””
I dropped beside him.
“Stay with me.””
He grabbed my wrist.
“There's... something else.””
“What?””
He struggled to breathe.
“Grandfather didn't choose me because I was his replacement.””
I leaned closer.
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
“He chose me because...””
His voice faded.
May you like
Then he whispered the words that changed everything.
“I'm not your brother.””
