Chapter 13: The Man Who Chose My Future

The courthouse went dark.

Not gradually.

Not like a power failure.

Every light shut off at the same moment.

The computer screen disappeared.

The security cameras blinked.

The hallway outside Rachel’s office became completely black.

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Then Rachel whispered:

“He knows we found it.””

I held the flash drive in my hand.

The evidence that explained everything.

The corruption.

The manipulation.

The reason my entire career had suddenly become a battlefield.

But one question remained.

Why me?

Why choose me?

I had spent years believing I had earned my position through hard work.

Through late nights.

Through difficult decisions.

Through proving myself.

Now I was being told my entire life had been arranged by someone else.

I hated how much it hurt.

Not because Richard Hale had betrayed me.

Because part of me wondered if he had been right.

Had I been chosen?

Or had I simply been used?

Rachel grabbed my arm.

“We need to leave.””

“No.””

“Evelyn.””

“No.””

I looked at the darkness outside the office.

“He wants me to run.””

Rachel stared.

“That doesn’t mean you stay.””

“I need to know why.””

“You already know enough.””

“No.””

I looked at the flash drive.

“I know what he did. I don’t know why.””

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

Someone who wasn’t trying to hide.

Rachel immediately reached for her phone.

No signal.

The footsteps stopped outside the door.

Then a voice spoke.

“Evelyn.””

My heart tightened.

Richard Hale.

My mentor.

The man who taught me how to write my first judicial opinion.

The man who stood beside me when I was sworn in.

The man who had just admitted he had controlled my life.

Rachel moved closer to me.

“Don’t open it.””

I didn’t.

Richard spoke again.

“You deserve answers.””

I laughed quietly.

“Now?””

“Yes.””

“After everything?””

A pause.

“I made mistakes.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“You made decisions.””

Silence.

Then the door opened.

Richard stood there.

Older than I remembered.

But still carrying the same confidence.

The same calm expression that had convinced generations of people he was always right.

“You were always emotional when you were hurt.””

I stared at him.

“And you were always arrogant when you were wrong.””

For the first time, his expression changed.

A small crack.

A sign that I had reached him.

Rachel stepped forward.

“You orchestrated this.””

Richard looked at her.

“You were always too curious.””

“And you were always too comfortable lying.””

He ignored her.

His eyes stayed on me.

“Evelyn, do you know how many judges never get the chance you had?””

I said nothing.

“Thousands of people spend their entire lives hoping for influence. You had it.””

“Because I worked for it.””

“No.””

The word was quiet.

But cruel.

“Because I saw potential.””

I felt anger rise.

“You don’t get credit for my achievements.””

“I gave you the opportunity.””

“You gave me a trap.””

Richard sighed.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

He stepped inside.

“The justice system is not as clean as people believe.””

“I know that.””

“No, you don’t.””

He looked at the flash drive.

“You think corruption is about money. Bribes. Secret deals.””

He shook his head.

“It’s about control.””

Rachel stared.

“Control over what?””

“Outcomes.””

Richard looked back at me.

“I needed someone with credibility. Someone people trusted.””

“And you chose me.””

“Yes.””

The honesty was worse than a lie.

“Why?””

“Because you believed in the law.””

I frowned.

“That sounds like a compliment.””

“It was.””

He stepped closer.

“People who believe in something are easier to predict.””

The words felt like a punch.

“You didn’t choose me because I was weak.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I chose you because you were strong enough to convince everyone.””

The hallway remained silent.

Then security alarms suddenly sounded.

Richard looked toward the ceiling.

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Surprise.

Someone else had moved.

Someone he didn’t expect.

A voice came over the emergency speaker.

“Richard Hale.””

Everyone froze.

The voice belonged to Officer Whitmore.

“You’re not the only one who kept recordings.””

Richard’s face changed.

May you like

For the first time all day…

He looked afraid.
