Chapter 11: The Recording That Lied

I played the recording again.

Thomas’s voice.

Clear.

Cold.

“Make sure she never reaches Courtroom 4B.””

The words sounded impossible.

Not because I couldn’t imagine Thomas being angry.

Everyone was capable of anger.

It was because I couldn’t imagine him saying those words about me.

Not him.

Not after everything.

I looked at Officer Whitmore.

“You expect me to believe this is fake?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I know how it was made.””

I studied him.

“You assaulted me.””

His eyes dropped.

“I know.””

“You lied about it.””

“Yes.””

“You wrote a false report.””

“Yes.””

His honesty was almost unsettling.

“Then why should I believe you now?””

He looked exhausted.

“Because I’m not asking you to forgive me.””

“Then what are you asking?””

“Survive.””

The word sat between us.

I leaned back.

“Explain.””

Whitmore rubbed his hands together.

“Three weeks ago, I was approached.””

“By who?””

“Someone connected to Michael Voss.””

“What did they want?””

“At first? Information.””

“What kind?””

“Court schedules. Witness movements. Security routines.””

My expression hardened.

“And you agreed?””

He looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Debt.””

I said nothing.

He continued.

“I made mistakes. Bad ones. I owed money to people who knew exactly how to use that against me.””

“And then?””

“They asked for something bigger.””

“Me.””

He nodded.

“They knew you were presiding over Voss’s case.””

“Why attack me?””

“Because they needed a reason to remove you.””

I thought about the complaint.

The cameras.

The public scene.

The accusation.

Everything was connected.

“Who gave you the order?””

Whitmore hesitated.

“That’s the problem.””

“Meaning?””

“I never saw the person.””

“But you heard their voice?””

“Yes.””

“And it wasn’t Thomas?””

“No.””

“Then why does the recording sound like him?””

Whitmore looked at the table.

“Because they had years of material.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What?””

“Your courtroom is recorded. Meetings. Hearings. Public statements.””

He shook his head.

“Someone collected enough audio to create anything they wanted.””

A chill moved through me.

Deepfake technology.

A weapon built from ordinary moments.

“Who else knows?””

“Only me.””

“Why?””

“Because the person who created it made one mistake.””

“What mistake?””

Whitmore looked at me.

“They used a phrase Thomas would never say.””

I waited.

“What phrase?””

“Courtroom 4B.””

I frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does.””

“Why?””

Whitmore leaned forward.

“Because Thomas knows you.””

A strange feeling moved through me.

“What are you saying?””

“He would never call it Courtroom 4B.””

I stared.

“He would call it something else.””

And suddenly I understood.

Thomas never referred to the courtroom by its number.

Not once.

For years, he had called it:

“My judge’s room.””

A small detail.

A meaningless detail.

Except it wasn’t meaningless.

It was proof.

The recording was fake.

I stood.

“Where is Thomas?””

Whitmore looked toward the door.

“I don’t know.””

My phone vibrated.

A message.

From Thomas.

*Meet me alone. Please. I can explain.*

I stared at the screen.

Whitmore noticed.

“You’re going?””

“Yes.””

“That’s what they want.””

“Maybe.””

“Judge Carter.””

I looked back.

“What?””

His voice lowered.

“If Thomas isn’t the enemy…”

He paused.

“Then whoever is has been standing close enough to make everyone doubt him.””

I left the room.

But I didn’t go alone.

I called Rachel.

She answered immediately.

“Evelyn?””

“I need your help.””

“What happened?””

“I found proof the recording against Thomas is fake.””

Silence.

Then:

“You believe him?””

“I believe evidence.””

Another pause.

“Good.””

“Rachel?””

“Yes?””

“Where are you?””

She didn’t answer.

That worried me.

“Rachel?””

Her voice finally came.

Very quietly.

“I’m looking at the person who has been controlling everything.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

The line went silent.

Then she whispered:

“It’s someone inside the courthouse.””

The call ended.

I stood in the hallway.

And slowly turned.

May you like

Because behind me…

Someone had been listening.
