Chapter 8: The Daughter Hidden in Plain Sight

The photograph remained frozen on the security guard's phone.

A little girl stood beside Eleanor, holding Noah's hand.

She looked about five years old.

Her dark curls rested against her shoulders, and a small silver bracelet circled her wrist.

I knew that bracelet.

I had chosen it before giving birth.

Two matching bracelets.

One for Noah.

One for his sister.

I had engraved their initials on the inside.

N and L.

The girl's bracelet carried the letter L.

“Her name,” I whispered.

“What is her name?””

Marcus looked at the security guard.

“Can you identify her?””

The guard checked the surveillance report.

“According to the hotel guest records, the woman entered under the name Eleanor Blackwood. The child was registered as Lily Monroe.””

I closed my eyes.

Lily.

The name I had chosen before my children were born.

Marcus stared at me.

“Danielle, you called her Lily?””

I nodded.

He turned toward Richard.

“Dad, why did you say she was adopted by Daniel and Vanessa?””

Richard looked devastated.

“Because I saw the adoption paperwork. It listed their names.””

I felt something twist inside my chest.

“Then why is she with your mother?””

Richard shook his head.

“I don't know.””

Marcus immediately called Eleanor again.

This time, she didn't answer.

He tried a second time.

Nothing.

Then a message arrived.

It contained a photograph of Noah and Lily sitting together inside a car.

Beneath it were eight words.

Bring the original ledger if you want them safe.

Marcus stared at the screen.

“Vanessa.””

I took the phone.

The photograph had been taken recently.

Noah was crying.

Lily had one arm wrapped around him.

A second message appeared.

Come alone. No police. No security.

Marcus clenched his jaw.

“She's using our children to bargain.””

I looked at Daniel.

He was watching us with an expression that made my skin crawl.

“You knew about Lily,” I said.

He shrugged.

“I knew the adoption happened.””

“Did you know she was alive?””

“Obviously.””

“Did you know she was my daughter?””

Daniel leaned back.

“You're asking the wrong questions.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Where is Vanessa?””

Daniel smiled.

“You'll never find her if you keep wasting time interrogating me.””

I turned toward Richard.

“Where was the adoption supposed to take place?””

He reached for the notebook.

“There's a name here.””

Marcus opened it.

A company appeared beside several large transfers.

Monroe Family Foundation.

The address belonged to an old estate in northern Georgia.

Richard pointed to it.

“That's where Vanessa arranged the adoption.””

Marcus immediately called his attorney.

“Send the address to the police. I want every available unit there.””

Then he looked at me.

“Danielle, we're getting our children back.””

I nodded.

But something bothered me.

I studied the photograph again.

Eleanor was standing beside the SUV.

She wasn't being forced.

She was holding Lily's hand.

And Noah appeared frightened.

“Marcus, look at your mother's face.””

He examined the image.

“What?””

“She isn't afraid. She's trying to tell us something.””

I zoomed in.

Eleanor's right hand was resting against the window.

Her fingers formed a strange position.

Two fingers raised.

One folded.

Then I remembered something.

When I was pregnant, Eleanor had taught me a secret signal.

If I ever felt unsafe around someone, I was supposed to hold up two fingers and fold my thumb.

It meant:

I need help. Don't trust the person beside me.

My heart began pounding.

“She isn't working with Vanessa,” I whispered.

“She's being watched.””

Marcus looked at me.

“Are you sure?””

“Look at the reflection in the car window.””

A man's silhouette stood behind Eleanor.

Wearing a dark suit.

Daniel's personal driver.

Marcus immediately called the police.

“Track the vehicle. The children are being held against their will.””

Meanwhile, the guard received another call.

He listened, then turned toward Marcus.

“Sir, the vehicle has been spotted.””

“Where?””

“Near the old Monroe estate.””

Marcus grabbed his coat.

“We're going.””

Richard tried to stand.

“I'll come.””

Marcus gently pushed him back into his wheelchair.

“Dad, you've done enough. Stay with the medical team.””

Richard caught his son's wrist.

“Marcus, listen to me. If Vanessa has the children, she'll try to separate them.””

“Why?””

“Because Lily knows something.””

I frowned.

“What could a five-year-old possibly know?””

Richard looked directly at me.

“Something she heard while living with Daniel and Vanessa.””

Before I could ask another question, Richard reached into his bedside drawer.

He pulled out a small photograph.

It showed a little girl sitting on a man's lap.

The man was Daniel.

Behind them stood Vanessa.

On the back, someone had written:

Our little insurance policy.

My stomach turned.

Marcus took the photograph.

“Dad, when was this taken?””

“Three years ago.””

I stared at Lily's face.

She was smiling in the photograph.

But something else caught my attention.

A faint scar beneath her left ear.

I touched my own neck.

I had the same scar.

A tiny mark from an operation when I was a child.

I whispered, “She's definitely mine.””

Marcus wrapped an arm around me.

“We'll bring her home.””

We drove toward the estate with police following several minutes behind.

The property was surrounded by tall iron fencing.

A single light burned inside the main house.

Marcus approached the gate.

Then a side door opened.

Eleanor stepped outside.

Her face was pale.

She looked directly at me.

“Danielle! Don't come any closer!””

Marcus rushed toward her.

“Mother, where are the children?””

Eleanor shook her head.

“They're inside. But Vanessa isn't alone.””

A figure appeared behind her.

Vanessa.

She held a small silver pistol.

And beside her stood a little girl.

Lily.

I couldn't breathe.

“Baby…”

Lily looked at me.

Her eyes widened.

Then she whispered something that made me collapse against Marcus.

“Mommy?””

May you like

Vanessa raised the gun.

“Take one more step, and neither child leaves this house.””
