Chapter 3: The Grandmother's Terrifying Secret
Nobody moved.
Eleanor Blackwood stood beneath the ballroom chandelier, her silver hair arranged neatly, her hands trembling around the handle of her cane.
She was eighty-one years old.
And she looked as if she had aged twenty years in the past five minutes.
Marcus rushed toward her.
“Mother, what are you talking about?””
Eleanor ignored him.
Her eyes remained fixed on Daniel.
“Tell him.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Mother, you're confused. You shouldn't be here.””
She struck her cane against the marble.
“Don't you dare speak to me like that!””
The guests exchanged shocked glances.
I had never seen a woman command a room so completely.
Eleanor turned toward Marcus.
“Your wife did not abandon you. She was taken from you.””
Marcus grabbed her hands.
“Who took her?””
Eleanor looked at Vanessa.
Then Daniel.
“Both of them.””
Vanessa began crying.
“Mrs. Blackwood, please. You don't know what you're saying.””
Eleanor laughed bitterly.
“I know exactly what I'm saying. I've spent five years listening to you tell me Danielle was dead while you wore her engagement ring on your finger.””
Marcus frowned.
“What ring?””
Eleanor pointed toward Vanessa's left hand.
The enormous diamond ring glittered beneath the chandelier.
“That ring belonged to Danielle. Your father gave it to her when you married.””
Marcus looked at the ring.
Vanessa quickly covered it.
“Marcus, it's just jewelry.””
“No,” Eleanor said.
“It's evidence.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
That ring.
I remembered it.
Not the diamond itself, but the small engraving inside the band.
D + M.
Forever.
I had worn it on the night of the accident.
Or I thought I had.
Marcus looked at me.
“Danielle, is that your ring?””
I nodded slowly.
“It was.””
Vanessa pulled her hand behind her back.
“You gave it to me!””
Marcus's expression hardened.
“I never gave you that ring.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Marcus, this is becoming absurd. Mother has been unwell for months. We should get her home.””
Eleanor slapped him.
The sound echoed across the ballroom.
“You have no right to call me unwell after what you did!””
Daniel's cheek reddened.
For the first time, his calm expression cracked.
“Enough!””
He grabbed Eleanor's arm.
Marcus immediately shoved him away.
“Don't touch my mother!””
Noah began crying again.
I crouched and wrapped my arms around him.
“It's okay, sweetheart.””
He whispered into my shoulder.
“Is Grandma going to disappear too?””
My heart broke.
“No one is taking Grandma away.””
Across the room, Eleanor looked at me.
“Danielle, I am sorry.””
I shook my head.
“Please don't apologize. Just tell us the truth.””
She nodded.
Then she began.
Five years earlier, Eleanor had received a phone call from St. Catherine's Medical Center.
A nurse told her that I had survived the accident.
But before Eleanor could reach the hospital, someone had already arranged my transfer.
The paperwork claimed that Marcus had authorized it.
Eleanor knew something was wrong because Marcus was overseas at the time.
She confronted Vanessa.
Vanessa told her that I had suffered severe brain damage and would never recover.
She also claimed that I had been asking for a divorce before the accident.
Eleanor didn't believe her.
But Daniel showed her documents that appeared to prove everything.
A signed divorce petition.
A letter supposedly written by me.
And a medical report stating that I had died during rehabilitation.
Eleanor was devastated.
Yet she continued investigating privately.
Then, three years later, she discovered that the private rehabilitation facility had never existed.
The address belonged to an abandoned medical warehouse.
“I hired investigators,” Eleanor said.
“But every lead disappeared. Every witness changed their story. And the hospital records were sealed.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because Daniel controlled the company accounts, and Vanessa had convinced everyone that you were already suffering enough.””
Daniel scoffed.
“This is a fantasy.””
Eleanor turned toward him.
“Then explain the money.””
She pulled a small black folder from her handbag.
Inside were bank statements, photographs, and copies of private correspondence.
Marcus took the first page.
The account showed repeated payments to a company called Monroe Medical Consulting.
The same company that had received the $380,000 transfer.
Marcus looked up.
“Daniel, you approved these payments.””
Daniel shrugged.
“I approved hundreds of payments.””
“Why were you paying Vanessa's company?””
“For consulting services.””
“What services?””
Daniel said nothing.
Vanessa suddenly stepped between them.
“Marcus, listen to me. I loved you. I did everything because I wanted to build a future with you.””
I stared at her.
“You tried to erase me.””
Her eyes flashed.
“You don't understand what you destroyed!””
Marcus moved closer.
“Careful, Vanessa.””
She looked at him with tears streaming down her face.
“You were never supposed to find her!””
The words escaped before she could stop them.
A collective gasp swept through the room.
Marcus went still.
“What did you just say?””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“I didn't mean…”
“You said I wasn't supposed to find my wife.””
Daniel grabbed her elbow.
“Stop talking.””
She pulled away.
“Don't tell me what to do!””
I watched them.
Two people who had spent years presenting themselves as the perfect couple were now desperately trying to silence each other.
Marcus held up the bank statements.
“Mother, is there anything else?””
Eleanor nodded.
“There is.””
She reached into her handbag and removed a small silver key.
“I kept something from the night Danielle disappeared.””
Marcus stared at it.
“What is it?””
“The key to your father's private study.””
Daniel's expression changed.
“Mother, no.””
Eleanor ignored him.
“Your father discovered something before he died. Something involving the accident, the hospital, and the ownership of Blackwood Enterprises.””
Marcus took the key.
“My father died six years ago. What could he possibly have known?””
Eleanor's voice dropped.
“He knew someone was trying to take control of your company.””
Daniel laughed nervously.
“That's ridiculous.””
“Your father left a recording,” Eleanor continued.
“He told me to release it only if Danielle ever returned.””
Marcus looked at me.
“Why would my father connect Danielle's disappearance to the company?””
Eleanor swallowed.
“Because the night of the accident, your father received a call from someone who claimed Danielle was carrying evidence that could destroy the Blackwood family.””
I felt a chill run down my spine.
“What evidence?”” I whispered.
Eleanor looked at me.
“I don't know. But your father believed you were in danger because of it.””
Marcus tightened his grip on the key.
“Where is the recording?””
“In his study.””
Daniel suddenly rushed toward Eleanor's handbag.
Marcus grabbed him before he could reach it.
“Don't even think about it!””
Daniel struggled.
“Let me go!””
Two security guards rushed forward and separated them.
Vanessa backed away toward the ballroom exit.
But before she could reach it, Noah spoke.
“Daddy?””
Marcus turned.
“What is it, sweetheart?””
Noah pointed toward Daniel.
“Uncle Daniel came to my bedroom last night.””
Marcus frowned.
“Why?””
Noah's little face crumpled.
“He said if I kept asking about Mommy, he would send me somewhere she could never find me.””
Marcus looked as though someone had punched him.
“Did he say anything else?””
Noah nodded.
“He told me Mommy wasn't the only one who survived the accident.””
The entire room went silent.
Marcus slowly turned toward his brother.
Daniel's face had gone completely white.
I looked at the envelope in my hands.
There was one document I hadn't shown anyone.
A page from the original accident investigation.
It contained the name of the second person listed as injured that night.
And when Marcus read it, his entire body stiffened.
Because the second survivor wasn't a stranger.
It was their father.
Richard Blackwood.

The man everyone had buried six years earlier.
And according to the hospital record, he was still alive.
