Chapter 10: The Stranger in the Bridal Suite
I had imagined meeting my biological father a thousand different ways.
In some versions, he was standing outside my childhood home, holding flowers and apologizing for missing every birthday.
In others, he was sitting across from me in a quiet restaurant, explaining why he had disappeared.
I had never imagined finding him inside my sister's bridal suite.
“Madison, wait,” Detective Harris ordered as we hurried through Bellamere's east entrance.
I didn't stop.
Nathan followed close behind, with Daniel Brooks speaking urgently into his phone.
The estate was supposed to be preparing for a wedding. Instead, police officers were moving through the corridors, security guards were questioning staff, and several guests were being redirected toward the gardens.
I reached the bridal suite first.
The door was open.
Brittany stood in front of the mirror, still wearing my ivory gown.
Her mascara had run beneath her eyes.
A gray-haired man stood beside the window.
He turned when I entered.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then he whispered my name.
“Madison.””
I stared at him.
His eyes were exactly like mine.
Same gray-blue color. Same slight downward tilt at the corners.
“Are you Daniel Hayes?””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
“Are you my father?””
His lower lip trembled.
“Yes, sweetheart.””
Brittany laughed nervously.
“Okay, can someone explain why there's an old man in my bridal suite?””
Daniel looked at her.
“You're Victoria's other daughter.””
“Obviously.””
“I knew your mother when she was younger.””
Brittany folded her arms.
“Then you should know this is a private event.””
I stepped between them.
“Brittany, leave.””
She looked at my dress.
“I'm not going anywhere.””
I glanced toward the train.
The pearls had been disturbed. Several were missing, and someone had clearly attempted to open the hidden seam.
“What did you do to it?””
“Nothing.””
“Brittany.””
She rolled her eyes.
“Mom said the recording was inside the train. She wanted me to remove it before the ceremony.””
My stomach tightened.
“Did you?””
“I couldn't find anything.””
Daniel approached the gown.
“Don't touch the clasp.””
Brittany stepped backward.
“How do you know about the clasp?””
He looked at me.
“Because I helped Caroline design the original mechanism.””
I stared at him.
“You knew about the dress?””
He nodded.
“Your mother wanted the truth preserved somewhere nobody would think to look.””
“My mother?””
“Caroline.””
He corrected himself immediately.
I looked away.
The word still felt unfamiliar.
Daniel reached into his jacket and removed an old photograph.
It showed him standing beside Caroline, both of them smiling outside a small house.
She was wearing a white blouse and holding a baby.
Me.
“I took that picture the day before she died,” he said.
I swallowed.
“Why did you disappear?””
His expression collapsed.
“Because I was told you were dead.””
The room went silent.
“What?””
Daniel sat down.
“After Caroline's accident, I received a phone call from a hospital employee. He told me she had died and that the baby hadn't survived.””
I stared at him.
“But I was alive.””
“Yes. Eleanor discovered the truth months later.””
“Then why didn't she find you?””
“She tried. Someone had changed my records and used my identity to make it appear I had died in a boating accident.””
“Who?””
He looked toward the doorway.
“Richard Reed.””
Nathan stiffened.
“My father?””
Daniel nodded.
“Richard knew Caroline and I had been together. He knew I was your biological father. He also knew Caroline intended to leave the design collection to you.””
I felt my throat tighten.
“So he told you I was dead?””
“Yes.””
“Why would you believe him?””
Daniel pulled a folded letter from his pocket.
“Because he sent me a copy of a hospital death certificate bearing your name.””
He placed it on the table.
It was an official-looking document.
But the hospital stamp was wrong.
The detective entered the room and examined it.
“This certificate was never issued by St. Matthew's.””
Daniel nodded.
“I know that now.””
I looked at him.
“Where have you been for twenty-six years?””
He lowered his eyes.
“Searching. I changed my name, worked in different towns, and eventually found an investigator who traced Caroline's old business records. Six months ago, he found your aunt.””
“Why didn't you come to me?””
“Because Eleanor told me to wait until she could prove the truth. She was afraid Victoria would hurt you.””
I looked toward Brittany.
My sister was quietly removing the pearl veil from her hair.
“Did you know Victoria was involved in Caroline's death?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I suspected she had stolen the money. I didn't know about the accident until recently.””
“Then why did you message me?””
“Because I found something in Caroline's old papers.””
He opened a second envelope.
Inside was a photograph of a small silver pendant.
I recognized it immediately.
It was the pendant my mother had worn in every family photograph.
Daniel pointed to the back.
“Caroline had this made. It contains a tiny storage compartment.””
I frowned.
“Mom still has it?””
“Yes. She wore it the night Caroline died.””
The detective stepped closer.
“Mr. Hayes, are you saying the pendant may contain evidence?””
Daniel nodded.
“Caroline told me she had hidden a microfilm copy of the original financial records inside it.””
I looked at the doorway.
My mother had worn that necklace for decades.
She had kept the evidence against herself around her neck.
Then Brittany suddenly spoke.
“Mom gave it to me.””
I turned.
“What?””
“She said I could wear it with the dress.””
She reached into her handbag and pulled out the pendant.
The silver chain dangled from her fingers.
The detective approached.
“Please place that on the table.””
Brittany hesitated.
Then she dropped it.
A tiny metallic click came from inside.
Daniel picked it up carefully.
He pressed the side.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a strip of microfilm.
For the first time since I entered the room, Daniel smiled.
“We found it.””
Then my phone rang.
Victoria.
I answered on speaker.
“Madison,” she said sweetly.
“I understand you've been causing quite a disturbance.””
“Where are you?””
“Preparing for your wedding.””
“It's not my wedding anymore.””
She laughed.
“Don't be childish.””
I looked at the pendant.
“Mom, we found the microfilm.””
Silence.
Then her voice changed.
“Where did you get that?””
“From Brittany.””
A sharp breath.
“Put it down.””
“No.””
“Madison, you don't understand what you're doing.””
“Then explain.””
She lowered her voice.
“Because if you hand that over, you'll discover what your biological father did to Caroline.””
I looked at Daniel.
His face had gone pale.
Then Victoria added one final sentence.
“And you'll discover that I wasn't the person who ordered the accident.””
The call disconnected.
Daniel slowly sat down.
I turned toward him.
“What is she talking about?””
He looked at the microfilm in his hand.
May you like
Then he whispered:
“Madison, I think I know who really ordered your mother's death.””
