Chapter 8

Claire stared at the phone in Ryan’s hand.

“No.”

Emma was still speaking.

“Ryan, Kern says there were two babies.”

Claire ripped the IV sensor from her finger.

“No.”

Ryan moved toward her.

“Claire—”

“I had one baby.”

Her breathing became rapid.

“One.”

Ryan looked at Alvarez.

The detective was already calling for medical staff.

Claire shook her head violently.

“I remember Mia.”

Emma’s voice came through the phone.

“Kern says you were heavily sedated during delivery.”

Claire grabbed Ryan’s wrist.

“He’s lying.”

Ryan held her hand.

“We don’t know.”

“I would know.”

“Claire—”

“I would know if I had twins!”

A nurse hurried in.

Alvarez took Ryan’s phone and put Emma on speaker.

“Kern told you where he is?”

Emma answered, “He wants immunity.”

Alvarez’s jaw tightened.

“He doesn’t get to negotiate with you.”

“He says if police approach, he’ll destroy the files.”

Claire cried.

“Ask him about the baby.”

Emma went silent.

Ryan took the phone.

“Emma, where is Kern?”

“The Mercer recovery lodge.”

Victor cursed.

Ryan turned.

“You were right.”

Alvarez contacted his team.

Ryan looked back at Claire.

She was shaking.

“What exactly did he say?”

Emma answered.

“That there were two live births.”

Claire covered her mouth.

Mia stared at her mother.

“Mommy?”

Claire forced herself to calm down.

Ryan took Mia and Lily into the hallway.

Alvarez followed.

“We need to keep this away from them.”

Ryan nodded.

His mind was spinning again.

A second baby.

Another child.

Where?

With whom?

Alive?

He leaned against the wall.

Victor approached.

“I never knew.”

Ryan stared.

“I don’t believe anything anyone says anymore.”

Victor accepted that.

Two hours later, police entered the recovery lodge.

Kern surrendered.

The original records were recovered from a locked safe.

Alvarez received scanned copies at the hospital.

Ryan, Claire, Victor, and Eleanor gathered in a private consultation room.

Emma arrived with her attorney but remained outside until Claire agreed she could enter.

Claire looked at her sister.

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then Claire said, “Sit.”

Emma did.

Alvarez placed several documents on the table.

“Claire Bennett was admitted under the name Clara Bell.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Ryan clenched his jaw.

Alvarez continued.

“She delivered by emergency cesarean section on February seventeenth, five years ago.”

Mia’s birthday.

Claire nodded.

“Two female infants were delivered.”

Emma covered her mouth.

Ryan felt sick.

Claire stared at the page.

“Where is she?”

Alvarez looked down.

“The records say Baby A remained with the mother.”

“Mia.”

“Yes.”

“And Baby B?”

Alvarez hesitated.

“Transferred.”

“To where?”

“The destination field is blank.”

Claire’s face twisted.

“No.”

Ryan reached for her hand.

This time she let him.

Alvarez continued.

“Kern is being interviewed now. He claims Margaret arranged a private adoption.”

Claire stood so fast the chair fell backward.

“She sold my baby?”

“Claire—”

“She stole my daughter!”

Ryan stood with her.

Emma was crying.

“I didn’t know.”

Claire turned.

“You visited me!”

“I never saw two babies.”

“You helped her!”

“I didn’t know!”

Claire moved toward Emma.

Ryan stepped between them.

“Not here.”

Claire screamed.

“Get out of my way!”

“She may be telling the truth.”

Claire stared at him.

The words hurt her.

Ryan saw it.

“Claire, I’m not defending what Emma did.”

“Then stop protecting her.”

“I’m protecting you from doing something you’ll regret.”

Claire stepped back.

Her whole body trembled.

Emma stood.

“I’ll leave.”

Claire looked at her.

Then froze.

Something had caught her attention.

Emma wore a thin gold bracelet.

Claire stared.

“Where did you get that?”

Emma looked down.

“This?”

“Yes.”

“Our mother gave it to me.”

“When?”

“My twenty-ninth birthday.”

Claire walked closer.

On the bracelet hung two tiny charms.

One shaped like a moon.

One like a star.

Claire’s eyes widened.

“When I was pregnant, I bought two baby bracelets.”

Emma’s face changed.

Ryan stared.

Claire touched the charms.

“One moon. One star.”

Her voice broke.

“I thought I lost the star bracelet.”

Emma slowly removed it.

“I swear I didn’t know.”

Claire grabbed the bracelet.

On the back of the star charm was a tiny letter.

M.

The moon had another.

S.

Ryan frowned.

“M and S?”

Claire began crying.

“Mia.”

She touched the moon.

“And Sophie.”

Ryan stared.

“You had names?”

“I dreamed them.”

Her knees weakened.

Ryan caught her.

“I told Emma in a letter.”

Emma gasped.

Claire turned.

“The letter you burned.”

Emma covered her mouth.

“I remember.”

Ryan felt another awful realization.

“Margaret knew the names.”

“Yes.”

Alvarez received a call.

He stepped outside.

Minutes later he returned.

His expression was grim.

“Kern talked.”

Claire stood.

“Where is my daughter?”

“He says Margaret arranged for the second child to be placed with a family in New York.”

Ryan asked, “Who?”

“Kern claims he never knew their real names. Voss handled the legal documents.”

“Find Voss.”

“We’re already questioning him.”

Claire paced.

“Five years.”

Ryan watched her.

Another stolen child.

Another life altered before it began.

Then Emma spoke.

“I may know who she is.”

Everyone turned.

Claire stared.

“What?”

Emma’s face was white.

“There’s a family my mother visits.”

“Who?”

“The Harpers.”

Claire frowned.

Emma continued.

“David and Caroline Harper. They live in Westchester.”

Ryan looked at Alvarez.

“Why would Margaret visit them?”

“She said Caroline was an old college friend.”

Emma swallowed.

“They have a daughter.”

Claire stopped breathing.

“How old?”

Emma whispered, “Five.”

Alvarez immediately asked for details.

Emma pulled out her phone.

She found an old holiday photograph.

A smiling couple.

A little girl between them.

Dark hair.

Brown eyes.

Ryan stared.

The resemblance to Mia was unmistakable.

Claire let out a sound somewhere between a sob and gasp.

Ryan felt his own chest tighten.

The girl had Claire’s smile.

Mia’s eyes.

Maybe his.

“What’s her name?” Claire whispered.

Emma looked at the photo.

“Sophie.”

Claire collapsed into Ryan’s arms.

Police contacted the Harpers.

The truth unraveled quickly.

David and Caroline had believed the adoption was legal.

They had paid a private agency.

They had no idea Sophie had been stolen.

Margaret had visited twice a year.

Always claiming she had helped arrange the adoption.

When police explained the situation, Caroline Harper refused to believe it.

Then she agreed to DNA testing.

The result came the next morning.

Sophie Harper was Mia’s identical twin sister.

And Ryan’s biological daughter.

Ryan sat in the hospital chapel after receiving the result.

Two daughters.

He had lost five years with one.

He had never known the other existed.

Claire found him there.

She sat beside him.

Neither spoke for a long time.

Finally Ryan whispered, “What happens now?”

Claire stared toward the empty altar.

“I don’t know.”

“The Harpers raised her.”

“I know.”

“They’re her parents too.”

Claire’s face tightened.

“I know.”

Ryan looked at her.

“You don’t have to decide anything today.”

“She’s my daughter.”

“Yes.”

“And theirs.”

“Yes.”

Claire began crying.

“This is cruel.”

Ryan nodded.

“Every option hurts someone.”

Claire wiped her face.

“I want to see her.”

“You should.”

“I don’t want to destroy her life.”

Ryan looked down.

“Then we don’t.”

Claire looked at him.

“We tell her slowly. With therapists. With people who know what they’re doing.”

Claire almost laughed.

“That would be new for our families.”

Ryan smiled sadly.

“Yes.”

That afternoon, the Harpers agreed to meet privately.

No cameras.

No lawyers in the room initially.

Only Ryan, Claire, David, Caroline, and a child psychologist.

Sophie did not attend the first meeting.

Caroline Harper cried from the moment she entered.

“I didn’t know.”

Claire looked at her.

“I believe you.”

Caroline covered her face.

“I would never take someone’s baby.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“I know.”

David looked at Ryan.

“We love her.”

Ryan nodded.

“So do we, even though we don’t know her.”

Silence.

Then Claire did something no one expected.

She reached across the table.

Caroline looked at her hand.

Claire whispered, “She shouldn’t lose a mother because she found another one.”

Caroline broke down.

The two women held hands.

Ryan looked away because he could not stop crying.

They agreed on a gradual plan.

Sophie would first be told she had a biological sister.

Then she would meet Mia.

The adults would follow her pace.

No one would rip her from the only home she knew.

Justice would be pursued against the people who stole her.

Not against the people who loved her afterward.

When Ryan returned to Claire’s room, Mia ran toward him.

“Did you find Sophie?”

Ryan stopped.

“How do you know that name?”

Mia frowned.

“Mommy told me.”

Claire looked confused.

“No, I didn’t.”

Mia shook her head.

“Grandma did.”

Everyone went still.

Ryan crouched.

“When?”

“When we lived at Grandma’s.”

“What did she say?”

Mia hugged her stuffed rabbit.

“She said Sophie was the good one.”

Claire’s face hardened.

Ryan felt anger rise.

“What else?”

Mia whispered, “She said Mommy should have kept Sophie and given me away.”

Claire burst into tears.

Mia looked frightened.

“Did I do bad?”

Claire pulled her daughter into her arms.

“No.”

She kissed Mia over and over.

“No, baby. Never.”

Ryan turned away.

His phone rang.

Alvarez.

“We have Margaret’s financial records.”

Ryan answered quietly.

“And?”

“She received four hundred thousand dollars from the adoption.”

Ryan closed his eyes.

Margaret had sold Sophie.

Alvarez continued.

“But that isn’t the biggest discovery.”

Ryan almost laughed bitterly.

“What is?”

“Someone paid Margaret two million dollars three months after Claire disappeared.”

Ryan opened his eyes.

“Who?”

“We traced it through shell companies.”

“Alvarez.”

The detective paused.

“It came from Mercer Development.”

Ryan stared through the hospital window.

His voice went cold.

“My father?”

“No.”

Ryan frowned.

“Then who authorized it?”

May you like

Alvarez answered.

“Your mother.”
