Chapter 5

Ryan felt Mia tighten her arms around Claire.

“What do you mean Emma was there?”

Claire looked exhausted.

Alvarez stepped into the room.

“Ms. Bennett, we can wait.”

“No.”

Claire’s voice was weak but firm.

“I’ve waited five years.”

Ryan moved closer.

“You said Margaret pushed you.”

“Mia saw the end.”

“The end of what?”

Claire looked at her daughter.

Ryan understood.

He turned toward Alvarez.

“Can someone take Mia outside?”

Claire kissed Mia’s forehead.

“Officer Jenna is right outside, baby.”

Mia shook her head.

“I don’t want to leave.”

“I’ll be right here.”

Ryan crouched.

“Lily sent you something.”

Mia looked at him.

He pulled a small folded paper from his pocket.

Lily had given it to him before he left.

A drawing of four people holding hands.

Mia took it.

“What is it?”

“She said you should show your mommy.”

Mia smiled weakly.

Claire’s eyes filled.

After Mia went outside with the officer, Claire looked at Ryan.

“Emma called me thirteen days ago.”

Ryan stared.

“She told me she hadn’t seen you in three years.”

“She lied.”

Of course.

Ryan was almost numb to the words now.

“Why did she call?”

“She said she wanted to help.”

Claire laughed bitterly.

“I should have known.”

“Help with what?”

“Margaret.”

Claire shifted painfully in the bed.

“I had enough evidence to bring everything down. The forged commitment papers. Dr. Kern’s payments. The trust documents. Victor’s transfers.”

Ryan swallowed.

“And Emma?”

Claire looked at him.

“Her signatures are on half of it.”

Ryan looked away.

“But you already knew that.”

“Yes.”

“What you don’t know is that Emma continued helping Mom after I escaped.”

Ryan’s eyes returned to her.

“How?”

“She helped track me.”

Claire explained.

After escaping the facility with infant Mia, Claire had lived under different names.

New Hampshire.

Maine.

Pennsylvania.

She worked cash jobs.

Stayed in rented rooms.

Trusted almost no one.

Whenever Margaret got close, Claire moved.

“How did she keep finding you?” Ryan asked.

“Emma.”

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

“She had access to your travel calendar, your company cards, your home addresses. Every time I tried to get near you, Emma warned Mom.”

Ryan felt physically ill.

“So Emma wasn’t just hiding the past.”

“No.”

“She was actively keeping you away.”

“Yes.”

Ryan closed his eyes.

Claire continued.

“Three years ago when I came to your house, I thought Emma might finally help.”

Ryan remembered the story.

“I was in Chicago.”

Claire nodded.

“She hugged me.”

Ryan looked at her.

“What?”

“She cried. She apologized. She said she would call you.”

Claire’s expression hardened.

“Then while I was waiting in the kitchen, I saw her phone.”

Ryan already knew.

“She called Margaret.”

“Yes.”

“I ran.”

Claire looked down.

“I didn’t trust Emma again after that.”

“Then why meet her thirteen days ago?”

“Because she sent me something.”

“What?”

Claire looked toward Alvarez.

“Do you have my bag?”

The detective nodded and retrieved an evidence envelope.

Inside was a printed bank statement.

Claire pointed to a transfer.

Twenty-five thousand dollars.

From an account belonging to Margaret.

To an account belonging to Emma.

Ryan stared.

“What was this for?”

“That’s what I wanted to know.”

Claire continued.

Emma had sent Claire the statement along with a message.

I can prove Mom is planning to disappear with Mia’s trust money. Meet me. Come alone.

Claire agreed.

They met at the Bennett family’s abandoned country property.

Mia came anyway because Claire refused to leave her.

“When we arrived,” Claire said, “Emma was there.”

“And Margaret?”

“Not yet.”

Ryan’s voice tightened.

“What did Emma say?”

“She said she wanted out.”

“Out of what?”

“Everything.”

Claire stared at him.

“She said your marriage was collapsing because she couldn’t keep lying.”

Ryan almost laughed.

Their marriage had seemed fine thirteen days ago.

Maybe that was another illusion.

“She told me Mom planned to declare me incompetent again. This time permanently. She said Mom needed control of Mia before the paternity test could happen.”

Ryan glanced at Alvarez.

“Did Margaret know Claire planned to contact me?”

Claire nodded.

“She found out.”

“How?”

Claire’s expression became painful.

“Emma told her.”

Ryan stepped back.

Claire quickly added, “Not intentionally. At least that’s what Emma claimed.”

“What happened?”

“Emma said Mom had put a tracker on her car.”

Ryan clenched his jaw.

“Then Margaret arrived?”

“Yes.”

Claire remembered the argument.

Margaret screamed at Emma for betraying her.

Emma screamed back.

Mia hid upstairs.

Claire tried to leave.

Margaret blocked the stairs.

Then everything turned violent.

“She grabbed me,” Claire whispered. “I pushed her away. Emma got between us.”

Ryan held his breath.

“Mia says Margaret pushed you.”

“She did.”

Claire touched the bandage on her head.

“I fell down half the staircase.”

Ryan’s fists tightened.

“When I woke up, Emma and Margaret were arguing.”

“About you?”

“About Mia.”

Claire swallowed.

“Margaret said she had to take Mia before the police got involved.”

Ryan glanced at the recorder.

“And Emma?”

“Emma refused.”

Ryan stopped.

Claire nodded.

“That part is true. Emma protected Mia.”

Ryan struggled to process it.

“Then why did she hide her?”

“Because Margaret threatened Lily.”

Ryan’s face changed.

“What?”

“Margaret told Emma that if she went to the police, she would expose Emma’s role in everything and make sure Emma lost Lily.”

Ryan stared.

Claire continued.

“Emma panicked.”

“Where were you?”

“Locked in the basement.”

Ryan went cold.

“Who locked you there?”

“Margaret.”

“How did you get to the farmhouse?”

“Two nights later, I escaped through a window. I was injured. I walked until I couldn’t.”

Ryan closed his eyes.

Thirteen days.

Claire had been missing while Mia was in his walls.

Emma could have called police.

She could have told him.

Instead she hid the child.

“Why didn’t Emma tell me?”

Claire looked at him sadly.

“Because Emma has spent five years choosing fear over truth.”

Ryan said nothing.

Claire handed him the recorder.

“I recorded part of the argument.”

Ryan pressed play.

Static.

Then Margaret’s voice.

“You think Ryan will forgive you? He’ll take Lily and throw you out.”

Emma answered.

“I don’t care anymore.”

“You will when you’re in prison.”

“I’m not letting you take Mia.”

“She belongs with me.”

“She belongs with Ryan!”

Ryan’s throat tightened.

Margaret laughed.

“You had five years to decide that.”

Then a crashing sound.

Claire’s voice shouting.

Mia screaming.

Margaret again.

“Get Claire downstairs.”

Emma shouted, “Don’t touch her!”

The recording became muffled.

Then Ryan heard something that made him freeze.

Emma crying.

“I never wanted any of this. I just wanted him to love me.”

Margaret replied coldly.

“And now he does. So stop behaving like your sister and protect what you stole.”

The recording ended.

Ryan lowered the device.

Claire watched him.

“I don’t know what Emma planned to do with Mia.”

“She said she was protecting her.”

“Maybe she was.”

Ryan looked surprised.

Claire continued.

“I hate my sister for what she did.”

Her voice cracked.

“But I don’t think Emma wanted Margaret to get Mia.”

Ryan sat down.

For the first time since the nightmare began, the truth was not simple.

Emma had betrayed Claire.

Repeatedly.

She had lied to Ryan.

She had helped maintain a fake death.

She had hidden a child behind a wall.

But thirteen days ago, she had also chosen Mia over Margaret.

Too late.

Terribly.

But she had chosen.

Claire looked at Ryan.

“There’s more.”

Ryan almost laughed.

“Of course there is.”

Claire did not smile.

“The trust.”

“What about it?”

“The forty-eight million isn’t the real reason Margaret hid Mia.”

Ryan frowned.

Claire looked toward the door.

“Your father didn’t tell you?”

“Tell me what?”

Claire took a breath.

“Mia isn’t the only child named in the Mercer trust.”

Ryan stared.

“What does that mean?”

“There’s another beneficiary.”

“Who?”

Claire looked him directly in the eyes.

“Emma.”

Ryan stopped breathing.

“That’s impossible.”

“No.”

“Emma isn’t a Mercer.”

Claire’s expression hardened.

“She is.”

Ryan stood.

“What are you talking about?”

Claire hesitated.

Then she said the words that destroyed another piece of his family.

“Emma is Victor’s daughter.”

Ryan stared at her.

No.

He shook his head immediately.

“No.”

Claire nodded.

“Margaret and Victor’s affair started thirty-five years ago.”

Ryan remembered Victor saying exactly that.

Before Ryan was born.

Emma was thirty-four.

His wife.

His wife was his father’s biological daughter.

Ryan felt dizzy.

“But that would mean…”

Claire saw his horror.

“No. Ryan, Victor isn’t your biological father.”

The room disappeared around him.

Ryan gripped the chair.

“What?”

Claire’s voice softened.

“You and Emma are not related.”

He barely heard her.

“Victor isn’t my father?”

“Not biologically.”

Ryan stumbled backward.

Alvarez moved toward him.

Ryan raised a hand.

“Don’t.”

He needed space.

Air.

Anything.

“Who is?”

Claire looked away.

“I don’t know.”

Ryan’s entire identity seemed to fracture.

Victor Mercer.

The man whose name he carried.

The man he had spent his life trying to impress.

Not his father.

Emma.

The woman he married.

Victor’s daughter.

Margaret had built both families around secrets.

Ryan looked at Claire.

“How do you know?”

“DNA records.”

“What records?”

“Grandpa Mercer had private genetic testing done before he died.”

Ryan stared.

“Why?”

“He suspected Victor was hiding another child.”

“Emma.”

“Yes.”

“And he found out I wasn’t Victor’s?”

“Yes.”

Ryan pressed both hands over his face.

Claire continued.

“Your grandfather changed the trust afterward.”

Ryan lowered his hands.

“How?”

“He didn’t leave money to Victor’s children.”

Ryan stared.

“He left it to?”

“His legally recognized grandchildren and their descendants.”

Ryan understood slowly.

“That includes me because Victor raised me as his son.”

“Yes.”

“And Emma?”

“If she proves Victor is her biological father, she can also make a claim.”

Ryan's chest tightened.

“And Mia?”

“Your daughter has a direct future interest through you.”

Ryan stared at the floor.

The money was not the point anymore.

The names were.

The identities.

The leverage.

Every secret changed who controlled what.

Ryan looked at Claire.

“Margaret wanted Emma’s paternity hidden.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because if it became public, Victor’s affair would be exposed. Your mother would learn the truth. The Mercer board would learn the truth.”

Ryan suddenly thought of his mother.

“Does my mother know I’m not Victor’s son?”

Claire’s face changed.

Ryan noticed.

“What?”

Claire hesitated.

“Ryan…”

“What?”

“She knows.”

His heart sank.

Claire whispered, “She always knew.”

Ryan walked out of the hospital room.

He did not know where he was going.

He made it to the end of the hallway before stopping.

His phone vibrated.

Emma.

He almost ignored it.

Then he answered.

“What?”

Emma was crying.

“Ryan, Lily is gone.”

His blood turned cold.

“What?”

“She was upstairs with Mrs. Dawson. The window was open. Lily’s gone.”

Ryan felt the world stop.

Emma sobbed.

“And there’s a note.”

Ryan could barely breathe.

“What does it say?”

May you like

Emma read it.

“You chose the wrong daughter.”
