Chapter 2: The Man Who Arrived
The helicopter blades slowly stopped spinning.
The entire field remained silent.
Nobody moved.
Nobody laughed anymore.
The same students who had surrounded me moments earlier now stood frozen, their phones still raised but their hands trembling.
Ethan Sterling walked across the grass.
He was older than I expected.
Late fifties.
Silver hair.
A dark suit with no unnecessary luxury.
He didn’t look like someone trying to prove he was powerful.
He looked like someone who already knew it.
Two security professionals followed behind him.
But Ethan Sterling didn’t need an introduction.
Everyone at Westbridge knew him.
His company funded technology programs across the country.
His name appeared in newspapers.
His investments changed entire industries.
And now he was standing in front of a scholarship student covered in garbage.
He stopped a few feet away from me.
His expression tightened.
“Amelia.””
I lowered my eyes.
“Mr. Sterling.””
His jaw clenched.
“Who did this?””
Nobody answered.
The silence became heavier.
Then Veronica stepped forward.
“Mr. Sterling, this is a misunderstanding.””
Ethan slowly turned toward her.
“A misunderstanding?””
Veronica forced a smile.
“Yes. It was just a harmless joke between students.””
I looked at her.
A joke.
That was what they always called it.
The rumors.
The stolen watch.
The harassment.
A joke.
Ethan looked around the courtyard.
“At what point does pouring garbage on someone become a joke?””
Veronica opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Chase stepped forward.
“Sir, you don’t understand the situation.””
Ethan looked at him.
“I understand exactly what I saw.””
Chase’s confidence disappeared.
“This girl has always caused problems.””
My eyes moved toward him.
There it was.
The same story.
Make me the problem.
Make everyone forget what happened.
Ethan noticed.
He looked at me.
“Amelia, tell me something.””
I hesitated.
“What?””
“Have they done this before?””
The courtyard became still.
I could have lied.
I could have protected myself.
I could have said no.
But then I remembered every night I cried silently in my dorm room.
Every morning I walked into class wondering what would happen next.
Every time people looked at me differently because of rumors.
So I answered.
“Yes.””
Veronica immediately interrupted.
“That’s ridiculous.””
Ethan didn’t look at her.
“Continue.””
I took a breath.
“My belongings disappeared. False accusations were made against me. Someone tried to frame me.””
Chase laughed nervously.
“She’s exaggerating.””
Ethan turned.
“Are you?””
The question was directed at me.
“No.””
I reached into my damaged bag and pulled out a small folder.
The papers inside were stained, but still readable.
“I reported every incident.””
Professor Lang suddenly looked uncomfortable.
Ethan noticed.
“Professor?””
The professor swallowed.
“I… was aware there had been complaints.””
“Complaints?””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
The professor looked down.
The answer was obvious.
Nothing.
Ethan’s face hardened.
“You received complaints from a student being targeted and did nothing?””
Professor Lang didn’t respond.
Veronica’s voice became sharper.
“My father contributes millions to this university.””
Everyone looked at her.
She realized too late what she had said.
Ethan slowly faced her.
“Is that supposed to impress me?””
Her confidence returned slightly.
“I’m saying my family has always supported Westbridge.””
“And?””
“And people here understand the importance of relationships.””
Ethan stared at her.
“No.””
His voice was calm.
“That means people here understand the importance of money.””
Nobody spoke.
Veronica’s face turned pale.
Because for the first time, money wasn’t protecting her.
Ethan looked at his assistant.
“Get the university board on the phone.””
Veronica stepped back.
“Wait.””
The assistant immediately moved.
Veronica looked around.
The students who had laughed earlier avoided her eyes.
The same people who wanted a viral video were now watching her become the center of one.
She turned toward me.
“This isn’t over.””
I looked at her.
“No.””
I touched the stained sleeve of my blouse.
“It isn’t.””
Ethan walked beside me.
“Amelia, there’s something else.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
His expression softened.
“Your father contacted me three days ago.””
My heart stopped.
I hadn’t heard that name in years.
“My father?””
Ethan nodded.
“He asked me to protect you if anything happened.””
I stared at him.
“That’s impossible.””
My father had disappeared when I was twelve.
He never called.
Never returned.
Never explained.
Ethan reached into his jacket and removed a small envelope.
“I was instructed to give this to you only when you were ready.””
My hands went cold.
“Ready for what?””
Ethan looked at the envelope.
“To learn why your father vanished.””
The courtyard disappeared around me.
All I could see was that envelope.
A secret from the man who abandoned me.
Then Ethan said something that made my blood run cold.
“Amelia, your father didn’t leave you.””
May you like
He paused.
“He was trying to keep someone away from you.””
