Chapter 12: The Final Piece

The next morning, Ethan disappeared.

No warning.

No explanation.

Just a message.

*I need time to verify something. Stay with your grandmother.*

I read it three times.

Every part of me wanted to believe there was a reasonable explanation.

But after everything I had learned, silence felt dangerous.

My grandmother noticed.

“He left.””

It wasn’t a question.

I nodded.

“He didn’t say why.””

She looked worried.

“Daniel trusted Ethan.””

“That doesn’t mean I should.””

She studied me.

“You’re becoming like your father.””

I looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

“You question everything.””

I almost smiled.

“Is that bad?””

“No.””

She looked outside.

“But it makes people uncomfortable.””

Later that afternoon, Dean Whitmore returned with a small box.

“I found this hidden in the archive room.””

I looked at her carefully.

“Why should I trust you?””

“You shouldn’t.””

Her answer surprised me.

She placed the box down.

“Trust should be earned.””

Inside was an old key.

Not a normal key.

A small metal key with my father’s initials engraved.

“Where does it go?””

Dean Whitmore looked at my grandmother.

Then answered.

“Your father’s private office.””

My heart jumped.

“My father had an office?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

She hesitated.

“Inside Sterling Global.””

The same place Ethan controlled.

The same place someone was hiding.

That night, I returned to Sterling Global.

Not with Ethan.

Not with security.

With my grandmother and Dean Whitmore.

The three people connected to my father’s past.

The office was hidden behind an old storage area.

The key opened the door immediately.

Inside was a room frozen in time.

My father’s desk.

His books.

His photographs.

I touched everything carefully.

It felt like entering a memory I never had.

Then I found the final drawer.

Locked.

The key opened it.

Inside was a single envelope.

My name was written on it.

*For Amelia.*

My hands shook.

I opened it.

The letter was short.

Amelia,

If you found this, then you finally know enough to make your own choices.

I stopped.

My father knew.

He knew I would hate being protected.

I need you to understand something. The person who betrayed me was never the most powerful person in the room.

I continued reading.

It was the person everyone trusted.

My breathing became heavier.

Then I reached the final line.

Amelia, if Ethan Sterling is still beside you, ask him one question.

I froze.

The room went silent.

The question was written below.

Ask him why he was the last person to see me alive.

My fingers went numb.

At that exact moment, the office door opened.

Everyone turned.

Ethan stood there.

His face changed when he saw the letter in my hand.

He didn’t look angry.

He looked heartbroken.

“Amelia…”

I held up the letter.

“You knew.””

His eyes lowered.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

Silence.

I stepped closer.

“When you decided I was ready?””

His expression broke.

“No.””

“Then when?””

Ethan looked at the letter.

Then at me.

And finally said the words I never expected to hear.

“The night your father disappeared…”

May you like

He paused.

“I was there.””
