Chapter 12: The Family Secret

I read the name again.

And again.

My father.

Thomas Thompson.

The man I buried ten years ago.

The man I remembered as quiet.

Hardworking.

Kind.

My entire body felt numb.

“No.””

The word escaped before I could stop it.

It couldn’t be true.

My father had struggled.

My father had worked two jobs.

My father had apologized every time he couldn’t afford something.

How could he be connected to this?

The front door opened.

I quickly folded the letter.

Michael walked in.

He stopped when he saw me.

“Maya.””

His face changed.

He knew.

Not everything.

But enough.

“You found it.””

Not a question.

I looked at him.

“You worked with my father?””

The silence answered first.

Then Michael closed the door.

“Maya, listen.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“Answer me.””

He looked exhausted.

“Yes.””

The room became painfully quiet.

“How long?””

“A long time.””

“How long?””

He looked away.

“Before we got married.””

I felt something inside me break.

Before we got married.

Before he loved me.

Before he promised forever.

“You met me because of him.””

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

“I met you because of you.””

“Then why?””

He sat down.

“Because your father asked me to.””

I stared.

“My father?””

Michael nodded.

“He was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Of you finding out.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Finding out what?””

Michael didn’t answer.

So I did.

“That he helped destroy my future?””

His face changed.

“Maya…”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“You don’t get to say my name like you’re the victim.””

He closed his eyes.

“Your father made mistakes.””

“Mistakes?””

I pointed toward the letter.

“You planned to take my company.””

“That was never supposed to happen.””

“Then what was supposed to happen?””

He looked at me.

“You were supposed to accept help.””

I stared.

There it was.

The same excuse everyone used.

Help.

Protection.

Concern.

Every betrayal came disguised as something kind.

“Why did my father do this?””

Michael was silent.

Then he said,

“Because he thought you were going to destroy yourself.””

I almost smiled.

“My father thought I was incapable?””

“No.””

Michael looked at me.

“He thought the world would hurt you.””

“And his solution was to hurt me first?””

He had no answer.

That was the answer.

I walked away.

I needed air.

I needed distance.

I needed to understand how my entire life had been built on secrets.

Outside, my phone rang.

Lauren.

I almost ignored it.

But I answered.

“Maya.””

Her voice sounded frightened.

“What happened?””

“You knew.””

Silence.

“I knew something.””

“Not enough.””

She understood.

“You found the letter.””

“Yes.””

A long pause.

Then Lauren whispered,

“I’m sorry.””

I closed my eyes.

“Did you know about my father?””

“No.””

“Did you know about Michael?””

Another pause.

“Yes.””

My heart sank.

“How long?””

“Since before you married him.””

I felt sick.

“And you said nothing?””

“I tried.””

“When?””

“Several times.””

I laughed.

“Lauren.””

“I did.””

Her voice cracked.

“But every time I tried to tell you, I remembered what my father would do.””

“And you were scared.””

“Yes.””

Finally.

The truth.

Two women.

Both controlled by powerful men.

Both making choices because they were afraid.

But fear did not erase damage.

“Why tell me now?””

Lauren took a breath.

“Because I found something.””

“What?””

“A document my father kept hidden.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What document?””

“The original agreement between him, Michael, and your father.””

I froze.

“Agreement?””

“Yes.””

“What does it say?””

Silence.

Then Lauren whispered:

“Maya…”

“What?””

“Your father didn’t start this to take your company.””

I frowned.

“Then why?””

Her next words changed everything.

“He started it because he knew someone else was coming for you.””

I stopped walking.

“Who?””

Lauren’s voice dropped.

“The person who has been controlling everything from the beginning.””

The call went silent.

May you like

Then she said one final sentence.

“And Maya… they are still inside your company.””
