Chapter 11: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

I sat in my lawyer’s office staring at the document.

The paper looked normal.

Professional.

Official.

Terrifying.

At the bottom was my name.

My signature.

My approval.

Except none of it belonged to me.

“This is impossible,” I whispered.

My lawyer, Rebecca, placed her glasses down.

“Maya, I need you to think carefully.””

“I know my own signature.””

“I’m not questioning that.””

She tapped the page.

“I’m asking if you ever signed any company restructuring documents.””

“No.””

“Any ownership agreements?””

“No.””

“Any power-of-attorney documents?””

I looked up.

“No.””

Rebecca nodded slowly.

“Then someone created a false record.””

The room felt smaller.

Someone had not just lied.

Someone had planned.

“How long has this been happening?””

“We don’t know yet.””

“But?””

She hesitated.

“But the document date is eighteen months old.””

Eighteen months.

I thought back.

What happened eighteen months ago?

Nothing.

Or at least nothing I noticed.

Bell & Bloom was expanding.

Michael was traveling more.

Daniel was handling more operations.

Everything seemed normal.

That was the terrifying part.

Betrayal rarely announces itself.

It usually walks in wearing familiar clothes.

“Can you prove it’s fake?””

Rebecca nodded.

“We can investigate.””

“How long?””

“Depends.””

“On what?””

“Who created it.””

I looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

She opened another file.

“Maya, there’s something else.””

I already hated those words.

“What?””

She pushed the folder toward me.

“Your company’s internal financial reports show unusual transfers.””

I flipped through the pages.

Several payments.

Several accounts.

Several amounts.

My eyes stopped.

“This account.””

Rebecca nodded.

“Yes.””

“Who owns it?””

She looked at me.

“Michael Carter.””

I closed my eyes.

The pain was different now.

The anger toward Lauren was simple.

Lauren had never pretended to love me.

Michael had.

The person who hurt you from a distance was easier to understand than the person who held your hand while doing it.

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered.

“What?””

“Maya, I found something.””

“What?””

“I accessed old company emails.””

“You shouldn’t have.””

“I know.””

A pause.

“But you need to see this.””

I heard papers moving.

“Michael wasn’t just working with Lauren’s father.””

My grip tightened.

“Who else?””

“He was negotiating with investors behind your back.””

My heart sank.

“For what?””

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“Control.””

I looked at Rebecca.

She already understood.

“He wanted the company.””

I whispered.

“Yes.””

Then Daniel said something worse.

“Maya, there’s a reason he waited until now.””

“What reason?””

“The Northbridge deal.””

I looked out the window.

“If the investment happens…”

“Bell & Bloom becomes worth enough that taking control would be almost impossible afterward.””

I understood.

Michael wasn’t trying to steal a small business.

He was trying to steal the future.

The future I built.

The future I fought for.

“Daniel.””

“Yes?””

“Did Lauren know?””

Silence.

Then:

“I don’t think she knew everything.””

Interesting.

For once, Lauren might have been another piece on someone else’s board.

I ended the call.

That evening, I went home.

The house was dark.

Michael wasn’t there.

For the first time in years, I walked through my own home and felt like a stranger.

Then I noticed something.

The drawer beside his desk was slightly open.

I had never searched his things.

I never had a reason.

Until now.

Inside was a small envelope.

My name was written on it.

I opened it.

The first page was a letter.

Not from Michael.

From Lauren’s father.

My hands shook as I read.

*Michael, the plan works only if Maya believes you are on her side.*

I stopped.

My vision blurred.

I kept reading.

*Once Northbridge approves the deal, we move forward. She will have no idea until it’s too late.*

I dropped the letter.

Because suddenly, I understood.

Michael didn’t betray me recently.

He had been preparing for this from the beginning.

Then I saw the final line.

The one that made my blood run cold.

*The only risk is that Maya discovers who started this years ago.*

I stared at the words.

Who started this.

Not who helped.

Not who continued.

Who started.

And underneath the letter was another name.

A name that connected everything.

May you like

A name I never expected.

My own father.
