Chapter 9: The Meeting Nobody Told Me About
I didn’t go home.
I didn’t call Michael.
I didn’t call Dad.
I drove until I didn’t recognize the streets anymore.
For the first time in my life, I understood what it felt like to have no safe place.
Everywhere I turned, there was another secret waiting.
Another person who had decided I couldn’t handle the truth.
David met me at a quiet restaurant outside the city.
He looked older than his pictures.
Tired.
Like someone who had been carrying information too heavy for too long.
“You came alone.””
“Yes.””
He nodded.
“Good.””
I sat down.
“What is happening?””
He placed a folder on the table.
“Your husband was involved in something bigger than an affair.””
“I know about the money.””
“You know some of it.””
My stomach tightened.
“What else?””
David opened the folder.
“Michael wasn’t stealing from you because he wanted luxury.””
“Then why?””
“Because someone was pressuring him.””
“Who?””
He slid over a photograph.
A man.
Older.
Gray suit.
Cold expression.
“Thomas Reed.””
“Who is he?””
“Your father’s former business partner.””
I stared at the picture.
“My father knows him?””
“Yes.””
“Michael knows him?””
“Yes.””
“And my mother?””
David didn’t answer.
I closed my eyes.
“Everyone.””
David looked uncomfortable.
“Sarah, your family has been connected to Thomas for years.””
“Why?””
“Because your grandfather’s company didn’t fail by accident.””
I looked up.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying someone caused it.””
A chill went through me.
“Thomas?””
David nodded.
“He manipulated the company, then disappeared when the losses appeared.””
“And my father?””
“Your father spent years trying to recover.””
“So why is Michael involved?””
David tapped the folder.
“Because Michael discovered documents connecting Thomas to illegal activity.””
“Then why hide it?””
“Because Thomas threatened him.””
“With what?””
David looked at me.
“With you.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
“He knew Michael’s wife was the pressure point.””
I thought about all those nights.
All those excuses.
All those secrets.
Michael hadn’t just been hiding an affair.
He had been afraid.
But that didn’t erase what he did.
“Why Emily?””
David sighed.
“Because Emily was investigating the same thing.””
“She was never the mistress.””
“No.””
The truth landed harder than I expected.
“She was trying to expose him.””
“And Michael used the relationship to hide his investigation.””
I looked down.
My husband had betrayed me.
But the story I believed wasn’t the whole story.
David leaned forward.
“There’s one thing you need to know.””
“What?””
“The night your father found Michael and Emily…”
He paused.
“What about it?””
“Your father wasn’t there by coincidence.””
I already knew that.
But hearing it again made my chest tighten.
“Who sent him?””
David looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
“You must have an idea.””
He hesitated.
Then pushed another document toward me.
A phone record.
One call.
One timestamp.
Thirty minutes before my father confronted Michael.
I read the name.
And my hands went cold.
Because the call wasn’t from my mother.
It wasn’t from Rebecca.
It wasn’t from anyone I expected.
It was from me.
My own phone number.
I looked at David.
“That’s impossible.””
David’s expression was serious.
“Sarah, someone cloned your phone.””
I stared at the record.
“Why would anyone pretend to be me?””
David slowly closed the folder.
“Because whoever did it wanted your father to believe you were in danger.””
I felt the room spinning.
“Why?””
David looked toward the window.
“Because they needed your father angry enough to start a fight.””
A terrible thought entered my mind.
Someone wanted chaos.
Someone wanted Michael exposed.
Someone wanted my family destroyed.
And they had used me to do it.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A distorted voice spoke.
“Sarah, if you want to know who really betrayed you…”
I froze.
The voice continued.
“Stop looking at your husband.””
A pause.
May you like
Then:
“Look at your father.””
