Chapter 13: The Man Behind Everything

The sound of the lock clicking behind us was louder than the darkness itself.

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Then a voice came from the hallway.

“You should have listened when I warned you.””

Michael stepped in front of me.

Not because he thought he could win.

Not because he wanted to play the hero.

Because he was scared.

And that told me more than any words could.

“Thomas,” Michael said.

The man laughed softly.

“You sound just like your father.””

My father’s voice shook.

“You’re alive.””

A small light appeared.

A flashlight.

The beam moved across the room until it stopped on an older man wearing a dark coat.

Gray hair.

Cold eyes.

A face I had seen in the documents.

Thomas Reed.

The man who had been hiding in every secret my family carried.

“You always were dramatic, Robert,” Thomas said.

Dad stared at him.

“You killed him.””

Thomas tilted his head.

“Careful.””

“You destroyed his life.””

“My father,” Michael said quietly.

Thomas looked at him.

“You grew up.””

Michael’s expression hardened.

“You remember me?””

“I remember everything.””

The room felt smaller.

I stepped forward.

“Why?””

Thomas looked at me.

“Why what?””

“Why destroy all of this?””

He smiled.

“That’s the question everyone asks when they finally understand.””

He walked closer.

“People think money is the reason.””

He tapped the side of the box.

“It isn’t.””

“Then what is?””

“Control.””

Nobody spoke.

Thomas continued.

“Your grandfather built a successful company. Your father inherited it. Your mother protected him. My partner died trying to expose us.””

I looked at my father.

“Us?””

Dad looked down.

Thomas laughed.

“Still hiding, Robert?””

My father finally looked at me.

“I made mistakes.””

Thomas smiled.

“That’s a generous word.””

I felt anger rising.

“You don’t get to act like the victim.””

Thomas looked at me.

“You have no idea what your father did.””

“And you do?””

“I watched him destroy evidence.””

Dad shook his head.

“No.””

“You did.””

“I was afraid.””

“And I used that fear.””

The honesty shocked me.

Thomas didn’t deny anything.

He admitted it.

Like he had been waiting decades to say it.

Michael stepped forward.

“You threatened my father.””

Thomas looked at him.

“Your father was weak.””

Michael’s fists tightened.

“He tried to expose you.””

“And he failed.””

I moved between them.

“Enough.””

Everyone looked at me.

“I’m done listening to men explain why they hurt people.””

Thomas studied me.

“You’re different than your father.””

“I hope so.””

He smiled slightly.

“You sound like your mother.””

That sentence made me freeze.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas looked toward the recorder.

“Your mother was the only one who tried to stop this.””

Dad closed his eyes.

I turned to him.

“Then why didn’t she?””

Thomas answered.

“Because she loved your father.””

The words hurt because they were true.

People didn’t always choose evil because they wanted to.

Sometimes they chose silence because they were afraid.

Thomas reached toward the recorder.

Michael grabbed his wrist.

Everything happened quickly.

Thomas pulled away.

Michael shoved the recorder behind him.

“Don’t touch it.””

Thomas looked amused.

“You still think protecting evidence makes you different?””

Michael stared at him.

“I know what I did was wrong.””

Thomas paused.

Michael continued.

“I lied to Sarah. I hurt her. I made choices I regret.””

I looked at him.

“But I’m done protecting you.””

For the first time, Thomas looked uncertain.

Then sirens sounded outside.

Thomas turned toward the door.

“What did you do?””

I held up my phone.

“I sent our location before the lights went out.””

Thomas stared at me.

“You called the police?””

“No.””

I looked at Michael.

“I called David.””

Thomas’s face changed.

The first real emotion.

Fear.

Minutes later, the hallway filled with voices.

The door opened.

Police officers entered.

Thomas didn’t run.

He simply stared at me.

“This isn’t over.””

I looked at the man who had destroyed so many lives.

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“It is.””

But as Thomas was taken away, Michael’s phone buzzed.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“What happened?””

He turned the phone toward me.

A message.

From an unknown number.
