Chapter 6: The Name Buried for Thirty Years
The abandoned building used to be a bank.
Now it was just a skeleton.
Broken windows.
Dust-covered floors.
A place where forgotten things went to disappear.
Exactly where Claire wanted to meet.
I arrived ten minutes early.
Not because I trusted her.
Because I needed answers.
The door opened behind me.
“Daniel.””
I turned.
Claire stood there wearing a simple black coat.
No designer clothes.
No perfect makeup.
No wedding dress.
Just a woman who looked exhausted.
“You came.””
“You said you knew who your real father was.””
She looked away.
“I do.””
“Then tell me.””
She walked toward an old wooden table and placed a folder on it.
“I found this in Charles’ private office.””
I opened it.
The first page was a DNA report.
My eyes moved across the document.
Then stopped.
“No.””
Claire watched me carefully.
“Read it.””
I did.
The name at the bottom made my entire body go cold.
Michael Whitmore.
Her biological father.
That part wasn’t shocking.
My mother had already told me.
But the second name was.
The test wasn’t between Claire and Charles.
It was between Claire and someone else.
Someone connected to me.
I looked up.
“What is this?””
Claire’s voice was quiet.
“The reason Charles was desperate to control me.””
I stared at the paper.
The DNA results showed a match.
A family connection.
Not distant.
Close.
Too close.
“Daniel…”
I looked at her.
“Who else was tested?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Your father.””
My heart stopped.
“My father died twenty years ago.””
“I know.””
“Then how?””
Claire reached into the folder.
She pulled out another document.
“This was hidden with the adoption records.””
I read the page.
And everything changed.
My father’s name was there.
But not as Claire’s uncle.
Not as a witness.
As the person who had originally tried to expose Charles Whitmore.
The man who had known the truth.
The man who died shortly after.
I looked at Claire.
“My father knew?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Because he helped your mother search for me.””
The room spun.
“My entire life…”
“Was built on a lie.””
I looked back at the documents.
Then I saw the final page.
A handwritten note.
From my father.
I recognized his writing immediately.
My hands shook as I read.
*If anything happens to me, Charles Whitmore is responsible. He knows what Eleanor discovered. He knows what I discovered.*
I looked at Claire.
“What did my father discover?””
Her face was pale.
“The real reason Charles took me.””
“Why?””
She stepped closer.
“Because Michael Whitmore didn’t just leave behind a daughter.””
She pointed to the documents.
“He left behind ownership rights.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Ownership of what?””
“Northbridge.””
I froze.
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
Claire shook her head.
“Charles didn’t want your mother’s company.””
She looked at me.
“He wanted mine.””
I stared at the papers.
The wedding.
The betrayal.
The financial attack.
The lies.
Suddenly everything connected.
Charles never wanted to destroy my family.
He wanted to control it.
And Vanessa’s marriage to me was never about love.
It was about inheritance.
My phone buzzed.
Rebecca.
I answered.
Her voice was urgent.
“Daniel, where are you?””
“Why?””
“Because Charles just filed an emergency lawsuit.””
“Against me?””
“No.””
A pause.
“Against your mother.””
I looked at Claire.
“What is he claiming?””
Rebecca’s answer was quiet.
“He’s claiming Eleanor Bennett stole Northbridge from the Whitmore family thirty years ago.””
I closed my eyes.
Charles was rewriting history.
Again.
Then Rebecca said the words that changed everything.
“Daniel, the court hearing is tomorrow morning.””
I looked at the folder in my hand.
At my father’s warning.
At Claire’s terrified expression.
Because now I understood.
The wedding wasn’t the beginning of the war.
May you like
It was the first move.
And Charles Whitmore had been planning this for thirty years.
