Chapter 10: The Heir Charles Feared
The name on the file haunted me.
Project Heir.
Three words.
That was all.
But those three words felt heavier than the entire Whitmore empire.
We returned to my mother’s house after the hearing was postponed. Nobody spoke during the drive.
Not because there was nothing to say.
Because there was too much.
Claire sat in the back seat, staring out the window.
My mother sat beside me.
The woman who raised me.
The woman who had hidden my entire beginning.
I wanted answers.
But I also wanted to protect her.
That was the problem with love.
Even when someone hurt you, you still cared about them.
When we arrived, Rebecca was already waiting.
She had boxes of documents stacked across the dining table.
“I called in a forensic investigator,” she said.
I looked at the papers.
“For what?””
“To trace the origin of Project Heir.””
Claire walked closer.
“Can they?””
Rebecca nodded.
“If the records exist, we can find them.””
My mother looked nervous.
“Daniel.””
I turned.
“Yes?””
“There’s something else you need to know.””
I already knew I wasn’t going to like it.
“What?””
She looked at Claire.
Then at me.
“Your father didn’t just help me find Claire.””
The room went silent.
“What else did he do?””
My mother sat down.
“He spent years investigating the Whitmore family.””
Rebecca opened a folder.
“We found his notes.””
She handed me a notebook.
The cover was worn.
Old.
My father’s handwriting was on the front.
*For Eleanor and the children.*
My fingers froze.
The children.
Not the child.
The children.
I opened it.
Page after page.
Dates.
Names.
Financial records.
Then one sentence stopped me.
*Charles Whitmore built his empire by controlling heirs, not companies.*
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Rebecca answered.
“We’re not sure yet.””
Claire flipped through another page.
Then she stopped.
Her face changed.
“What?””
She pointed.
“This name.””
I looked down.
A name appeared repeatedly.
*Jonathan Vale.*
My mother’s expression changed.
“Impossible.””
“You know him?”” I asked.
She nodded slowly.
“He was Charles’ legal advisor thirty years ago.””
Rebecca frowned.
“Why is that important?””
My mother looked at the notebook.
“Because Jonathan was the only person who knew about Claire’s adoption.””
Claire stared.
“Then why is his name here?””
I turned the page.
A handwritten note was underneath.
*Jonathan knows the truth about Daniel’s birth.*
My heart stopped.
“My birth?””
Nobody answered.
The front door suddenly opened.
We all froze.
A man stood there.
Older.
Gray hair.
A tired face.
But I recognized him.
From the photograph.
The man standing beside my father at the hospital.
My breath caught.
“Who are you?””
He looked at me.
His eyes filled with regret.
“My name is Jonathan Vale.””
Rebecca immediately stepped between us.
“You’re not supposed to be here.””
“I know.””
“Then leave.””
Jonathan looked at my mother.
“I owe Eleanor the truth.””
My mother looked shocked.
“Why now?””
“Because Charles knows I’m alive.””
The room went silent.
Jonathan slowly walked inside.
“I spent thirty years running.””
“From Charles?”” I asked.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He looked at me.
“Because I helped him create Project Heir.””
My hands tightened.
“You?””
Jonathan nodded.
“I was his attorney.””
“Then explain.””
He looked at the notebook.
“Charles discovered Michael Whitmore had changed his will before he died.””
Claire stepped forward.
“What did it say?””
Jonathan looked at her.
“Michael left everything to his biological children.””
My mother froze.
“Claire.””
Jonathan nodded.
“And another child.””
The room went silent.
My voice barely came out.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
I stared.
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
Jonathan looked at me.
“It’s the reason Charles has spent decades searching for you.””
Rebecca stepped forward.
“Why would Michael leave assets to Daniel?””
Jonathan sighed.
“Because Michael knew Charles would destroy Claire’s inheritance.””
He looked at me.
“Your father adopted you legally because he wanted to protect Michael’s wishes.””
I felt dizzy.
“My father knew?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t he tell me?””
Jonathan looked down.
“Because Charles threatened everyone involved.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What kind of threat?””
Jonathan hesitated.
Then said:
“He threatened to expose Eleanor’s secret.””
My mother’s face went pale.
“Jonathan…”
“I’m sorry.””
I looked between them.
“What secret?””
Nobody answered.
And that scared me more than anything.
Then Jonathan reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“This was supposed to be given to you on your twenty-fifth birthday.””
I took it.
“My father wrote this?””
Jonathan nodded.
“He wanted you to know who you really were.””
My fingers shook as I opened it.
Inside was a single page.
Only a few lines.
*Daniel, if you are reading this, Charles has found you.*
I stopped breathing.
May you like
The next sentence was worse.
*You are not just my son. You are the last person standing between Charles Whitmore and everything he stole.*
