Chapter 9: The Family Name That Was Erased
I didn’t hear the music anymore.
I didn’t hear the guests whispering.
I didn’t hear the photographer quietly leaving the room.
All I heard was my mother’s voice.
“Who your real grandfather was.””
The sentence didn’t make sense.
My father looked just as shocked as I felt.
“What did you say?””
Mom looked at him.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sorry.””
My father stared at her.
“Margaret.””
“I should have told you years ago.””
“Tell me what?””
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then Grandma quietly sat down.
Like she had been carrying this moment for decades.
“Daniel,” she said softly.
“You deserve the truth.””
I looked at my family.
At the people who raised me.
At the people I trusted.
And suddenly, everyone had a secret.
“Okay,” I said.
My voice sounded different.
“Tell me.””
Mom held my gaze.
“Your father is the man who raised you.””
She looked at my dad.
“He loves you.””
My father looked hurt.
Not angry.
Hurt.
“But?””
Mom swallowed.
“But he isn’t your biological grandfather’s son.””
I frowned.
“What?””
She shook her head.
“I’m sorry. I’m saying this wrong.””
She looked at the pendant.
“The truth is about your grandfather.””
I waited.
“Your grandfather wasn’t a Carter.””
Silence.
The words felt impossible.
I looked at my father.
He looked down.
“You knew?””
He nodded slowly.
“I found out after my father died.””
My heart sank.
“You knew and never told me?””
“I wanted to protect you.””
Everyone kept saying that.
Protect you.
Protect you.
But nobody asked if I wanted the truth.
I turned away.
“What was his name?””
Mom looked at Grandma.
Grandma answered.
“Eleanor’s son.””
I stared.
“What?””
My grandmother held the notebook.
“The child she had before she disappeared.””
Richard suddenly stepped forward.
“That’s impossible.””
Everyone looked at him.
For the first time, he looked genuinely shocked.
Grandma smiled sadly.
“Why?””
“Because…”
He stopped.
Because he knew.
Emily looked at her father.
“Because what?””
Richard didn’t answer.
I looked at him.
“You knew.””
He looked at me.
Then away.
My father’s voice became cold.
“You knew all along.””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
My father stepped forward.
“You knew Daniel was connected to Eleanor.””
Richard said nothing.
And that silence confirmed it.
Emily looked devastated.
“Dad…”
Richard finally spoke.
“You don’t understand.””
“No,” she said.
“I don’t.””
He looked at her.
“I was trying to fix what my family lost.””
Emily laughed through tears.
“You used me.””
“I was trying to help you.””
“You sent me into his life to find something.””
Richard looked away.
That was the answer.
I felt sick.
The woman I married had entered my life because of a family secret.
Her father had encouraged it.
And my own family had hidden the truth from me.
My grandmother opened the notebook again.
“There is still one thing we haven’t found.””
“What?””
“The final page.””
My father frowned.
“There are missing pages?””
Grandma nodded.
“Eleanor tore them out.””
“Why?””
She looked at Richard.
“Because she knew someone would come looking.””
Richard’s expression changed.
My father noticed.
“What do you know about the missing pages?””
Richard didn’t respond.
Then Emily whispered:
“I know.””
Everyone turned.
She looked at me.
“I found them.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“When my grandmother died, I found an envelope hidden with her things.””
Richard looked furious.
“You never told me?””
“No.””
Emily shook her head.
“Because I realized she wasn’t protecting our family.””
She looked at me.
“She was protecting a lie.””
I stepped closer.
“Where are the pages?””
Emily reached into her purse.
My entire body went tense.
She pulled out a small folded packet.
The room went silent.
“I brought them here today.””
My father took a step forward.
“Why?””
Emily looked at the pendant.
Then at my mother.
Then at me.
And her voice broke.
“Because my grandmother wrote one last thing.””
She handed the pages to my father.
He unfolded them.
His eyes moved across the words.
Then he looked at me.
And his face changed completely.
“What does it say?”” I asked.
My father’s hands shook.
“It says…”
He stopped.
“Dad?””
He looked at me.
Then at Emily.
Then he whispered:
“It says the person who truly betrayed this family…”
A pause.
May you like
A terrible pause.
“…was the man who raised you.””
