Chapter 6: The Letter Nobody Was Supposed to Find

The second letter was the reason everyone stopped fighting.

Not because the situation became clearer.

Because suddenly, it became much worse.

My father held the pendant carefully.

The tiny compartment on the back was still open.

The first letter had been there.

But now he was looking for something else.

Something that apparently should have never been found.

Richard Bennett watched every movement.

And that told me everything.

A person with nothing to hide wouldn’t look that worried.

“Where is it?”” Richard asked.

My father looked up.

“You tell me.””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Grandma laughed quietly.

It wasn’t a happy laugh.

“You always were a terrible liar.””

Richard stared at her.

“You don’t know anything about me.””

“I know enough.””

She pointed at the pendant.

“I know your family spent decades trying to rewrite what happened.””

Emily looked exhausted.

“Can someone please explain?””

Nobody listened.

Not even her father.

That was the moment I realized something.

Emily wasn’t controlling the situation anymore.

She had walked into a secret that was bigger than her.

My mother gently touched Emily’s arm.

“Did your grandmother ever talk about Eleanor Carter?””

Emily looked confused.

“No.””

“Did she mention this family?””

“No.””

My father looked at her.

“Then what did she tell you?””

Emily hesitated.

Finally, she whispered:

“She told me the Carters were thieves.””

The words hit the room like a slap.

My grandmother closed her eyes.

For a moment, she looked old.

Older than I had ever seen her.

“She lied to you.””

Emily shook her head.

“She said your family stole something from ours.””

My father looked at Richard.

“And you let her believe that.””

Richard didn’t respond.

That silence was enough.

I looked at Emily.

“You knew there was a connection.””

“I knew there was a story.””

“You never told me.””

“I thought it was just family drama.””

I stared at her.

“Family drama?””

My voice cracked.

“You wore that necklace into my wedding while my mother brought you something connected to the same story.””

Emily looked down.

“I didn’t know.””

Maybe part of me wanted to believe her.

But there were too many questions.

Too many things she had hidden.

Richard suddenly stepped forward.

“This is pointless.””

Everyone looked at him.

He reached for the pendant.

My father immediately moved it away.

“No.””

Richard’s eyes hardened.

“You don’t understand what you’re holding.””

My father smiled coldly.

“Actually, I think we’re starting to.””

Richard looked at me.

“Daniel, you should be careful who you trust.””

The irony almost made me laugh.

A man who had entered my wedding uninvited was warning me about trust.

“You don’t get to say that,” I told him.

His expression changed.

Then he looked at Emily.

“Tell him.””

Emily went pale.

“Dad…”

“Tell him the truth.””

“What truth?””

I looked between them.

Emily closed her eyes.

“I didn’t just know about the necklace.””

Nobody moved.

“I knew about your family before we met.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“I saw your last name when we started dating.””

“Then why did you stay?””

She didn’t answer.

Richard did.

“Because she was trying to find something.””

Emily looked at him.

“Stop.””

But he continued.

“She was trying to find the pendant.””

The room went silent.

I felt like the floor had disappeared beneath me.

I looked at my wife.

“Is that true?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I didn’t mean for this to happen.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She whispered:

“Yes.””

My mother covered her mouth.

My father looked furious.

And Grandma…

Grandma looked heartbroken.

Because she wasn’t looking at Emily like an enemy.

She was looking at her like someone who had been used.

Then Richard smiled.

Because he thought he had won.

But he didn’t notice my grandmother had picked up the first letter again.

She read the final line.

A line none of us had seen before.

Her face changed.

“Wait.””

Everyone turned.

“What?”” my father asked.

Grandma looked directly at Richard.

Then she said:

“This letter wasn’t written to protect the pendant.””

She held up the paper.

“It was written to expose the person who would come looking for it.””

Richard’s smile disappeared.

And my grandmother whispered the name written at the bottom of the hidden letter.

A name that wasn’t Bennett.

A name that made Richard step backward.

“Because the person who betrayed us…”

Grandma said quietly.

“…wasn’t your grandfather.””

May you like

She looked at Emily.

“It was someone much closer.””
