Chapter 14: The Last Betrayal

“David?””

The lights flickered back on.

He stood in the doorway holding a gun.

My heart stopped.

Daniel stepped in front of me.

“Put it down.””

David's face was wet with tears.

“I don't want to do this.””

“Then don't.””

“You don't understand.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“I understand perfectly.””

David's hand shook.

“I tried to protect you.””

“You helped them.””

“I was protecting my daughter.””

“And what about my son?””

David looked at me.

“I never wanted Miles hurt.””

“Then why did you let them take him?””

“I didn't.””

“Where is he?””

David lowered the gun.

“Safe.””

I stared.

“You're lying.””

“No.””

He pulled out his phone.

A live video appeared.

Miles was sitting in a locked room.

Alive.

Scared.

But unharmed.

“Mom!””

I stepped toward the phone.

“Miles!””

David swallowed.

“They wanted me to bring you here.””

“Who?””

He looked at Daniel.

“Richard.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

David's eyes filled with fear.

“He told me you were going to destroy everything.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Richard isn't in charge anymore.””

David looked confused.

“What?””

Daniel turned to me.

“Tell him.””

I didn't understand.

“Tell him what?””

Daniel pointed at the recorder.

“Play the last file.””

I pressed the button.

Static filled the room.

Then Richard's voice.

“You were always useful, David.””

David went pale.

Richard continued.

“Your daughter was never in danger.””

David's knees nearly buckled.

“You said—”

“I said whatever I needed to say.””

David whispered, “No.””

Richard's recording continued.

“And now Laura has the evidence.””

A second voice entered.

A woman's voice.

Calm.

Familiar.

My blood froze.

I knew that voice.

My secretary.

Megan.

She had worked beside me for seven years.

Richard said,

“Megan will handle the rest.””

David stared at me.

“Megan?””

I could barely breathe.

Daniel nodded.

“She was the one who had access to the security system.””

“The photographs.””

“The employee records.””

“The fake documents.””

“Everything,” Daniel said.

The office door opened again.

Megan walked in.

She wasn't carrying a weapon.

She didn't need one.

She looked completely calm.

“Daniel,” she said.

He stared at her.

“You.””

She smiled.

“You took much longer than expected.””

I stepped forward.

“You ruined Ariana's life.””

Megan looked at me.

“I needed you distracted.””

“You used my son.””

“I used the weakness of children.””

My hands clenched.

“You threatened my family.””

“No.””

She smiled.

“Richard did.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You've been running this since before the crash.””

Megan's smile faded.

“You always were difficult.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

She sighed.

“Because Daniel found the ledger.””

“What ledger?””

“The original property records.””

She pointed at the black case.

“He copied everything.””

Daniel nodded.

“And you thought killing me would end it.””

“It almost did.””

I held up the recorder.

“Not anymore.””

Megan's eyes moved to it.

“You don't have the original.””

“No.””

“But I have a copy.””

Her face changed.

I smiled for the first time.

“I sent it.””

Megan froze.

“To who?””

“The police.””

Her expression collapsed.

Daniel looked at me.

“When?””

“Five minutes ago.””

Megan lunged.

David grabbed her.

The gun fell.

Daniel kicked it away.

Ariana's mother screamed,

“Someone's coming!””

Sirens filled the parking lot.

Megan stared at me.

“You have no idea what you've started.””

I looked at her.

“I know exactly what I started.””

The office door burst open.

Police officers rushed inside.

Megan was handcuffed.

David surrendered.

And within minutes, Miles was found at the community center.

I ran to him.

He threw himself into my arms.

“Mom, I'm sorry.””

I held him tightly.

“I know.””

“I was scared.””

“I know.””

He started crying.

Then he whispered,

“Is Dad really alive?””

I looked across the hallway.

Daniel stood there.

Miles stared at him.

Neither moved.

Then Daniel opened his arms.

Miles ran.

I watched my son hug the father he had believed dead for six years.

For the first time that night, I allowed myself to cry.

But there was still one thing I didn't understand.

The money.

The money Daniel had supposedly stolen.

The money Ariana's mother had hidden.

The money that had started everything.

The next morning, Daniel finally showed me where it was.

And when I saw what was inside the final box, I understood why everyone had been willing to destroy our families to find it.
